Chapter 212: THE UNRAVELING THREAD

CHAPTER 212. THE UNRAVELING THREAD

Gloria’s gaze, initially fixed on Annabelle, had lingered for a few minutes, a silent plea hanging in the air between them. Then, with a slow, hesitant movement, her eyes drifted towards the small, luminous screen that Annabelle held. What she saw there made her eyes go wide, dilating until the irises seemed to consume the entire white. A cold dread, sharp and immediate, pierced through her, an icy tendril that snaked through her veins before blossoming into a full-blown panic. It wasn't just a feeling; it was a physical invasion, a complete submersion of her senses. Terror and panic, raw and unyielding, completely flooded every inch of her body, stealing her breath.

She trembled where she sat, rooted to the spot, her gaze fixed on the phone as if hypnotized by a venomous snake. Her hands, usually so steady, began to shake uncontrollably, a tremor that resonated through her entire frame. Her lips, which had been pressed together in a tight line of apprehension, now parted slightly, a soft, involuntary gasp escaping them. She blinked rapidly, a desperate, almost frantic fluttering of her eyelids, as if she were trying to dislodge an impossible image, to convince herself that this was merely some grotesque nightmare, a cruel trick of her subconscious. This isn't real, she tried to tell herself, it can't be true. This is some elaborate, twisted joke.

But the undeniable truth of it clung to her, a suffocating shroud. She couldn't deny it. She really and honestly couldn't. The cold, hard reality of the image burned itself into her mind. A choked, humorless sound bubbled up from her throat, a strange, almost hysterical chuckle that held no mirth. She shook her head, a slow, disbelieving movement. "Oh no," she whispered, the words barely audible, "you've got to be kidding me."

Annabelle, her expression grim and unyielding, offered a slight, almost imperceptible shrug. "Yeah, I know," she said, her voice flat, devoid of any comfort. "It's hard to believe, but it is what it is."

At Annabelle's words, the fragile illusion Gloria had desperately clung to shattered completely. She felt her entire world, meticulously constructed and carefully maintained, crumble into so many irreparable pieces around her. The sensation was visceral, like a glass edifice imploding, each shard a painful memory, a shattered dream.

What was on the screen, you may ask? It was a video. Not just any video, not a fleeting image or a blurry snapshot. This was a video of her and Tristan, captured in one of their many illicit escapades, a secret world now violently exposed. The two of them were intimately entangled, their bodies a single, writhing mass. It was a clear, shockingly intense scene, steamy and hot, radiating an undeniable, raw sensuality. They were naked, completely uncensored, every curve and contour, every thrust and groan, laid bare for the world to see. Their faces, unmistakable and vivid, were perfectly clear, leaving no room for doubt, letting the entire world know the two people involved in this forbidden activity.

The resolution was so sharp, so unforgiving, that every detail was shown, nothing left to the imagination, nothing hidden. There was a particular, graphic division, a shocking close-up of Tristan's dick slamming into her. It was all there, stark and undeniable, like an intense, graphic, HD pornographic scenario. And it wasn't just stored away; it was posted on the internet, blasted across the digital landscape for anyone, everyone, to witness.

And then, the headline. Blazoned across the top of the entire news article, a cruel, mocking banner that ripped through the last vestiges of Gloria’s composure: "Wife of popular millionaire David Munroe cheating on husband with the popular billionaire Tristan Vale." Both names, hers and Tristan’s, were prominently displayed, a public indictment.

Gloria’s eyes, already wide with horror, seemed to stretch even further, reflecting the harsh glare of the phone screen. "Oh my God," she muttered, the sound choked, barely escaping her throat. Her hand flew to her mouth, covering her trembling lips as if to contain the scream that threatened to erupt. She shook her head quickly, a desperate, frantic movement. "This can't be true, this can't be real," she pleaded, more to herself than to Annabelle.

But Annabelle wasn't looking at her anymore. Her gaze had drifted, distant and troubled, fixed on some unseen point beyond Gloria. A heavy silence descended, thick with unspoken accusations and bitter truths.

"I don't know what to say anymore, Gloria," Annabelle finally spoke, her voice low, laced with a weary resignation, still not meeting Gloria’s eyes. "I tried to explain this to you. I tried to let you know that this was a big mistake, that getting entangled with him was not the right thing to do, that this was just so freaking messed up. But you wouldn't listen. You never listen." Her voice hardened, a sharp edge cutting through the weariness. "Now tell me, how the hell did anyone manage to guess this entire thing, to post it and completely show that this is the handiwork of Tristan?"

The moment Annabelle uttered those words, a sudden, unfamiliar heat surged through Gloria. It wasn't the cold dread of before, but a fiery rush of anger, indignant and immediate, that coursed through her body. Her head snapped up, turning instantly to look at Annabelle, her jaw clenching so tightly she could feel the grind of her teeth. "You have got to be kidding me," she hissed, her voice low and dangerous. No, Gloria would shout instantly, her voice rising, laced with fierce denial. "Don't you dare say that! Tristan cannot be the one to do this!"

Annabelle finally turned, her eyes meeting Gloria’s, an eyebrow arching in a gesture of profound disbelief. A mirthless laugh escaped her lips, sharp and brittle. "I can't believe how blind you are," she said, her voice dripping with a mixture of frustration and genuine concern. "I really cannot believe how insanely blind you are to see the truth that is hiding in front of you. I have told you, Gloria, everything about Tristan is twisted. It might be really, really hard for you to believe, because you've fallen for his charm, for his lies, but baby girl, it is the truth. He is twisted, complicated, a labyrinth of deceit. He can't be deciphered. You can't understand him, not truly, and he is completely unpredictable. So I am not surprised this is coming up now, not one bit."

Annabelle gestured emphatically at the phone, then around the room, encompassing the very air thick with tension. "How do you want to explain this, from everything going on here? I am sure Tristan would have been the one to record it. I am sure he is the only one that will have access to this kind of video content. Or you want to tell me there is someone else? Someone else with the motive, the means, the access?"

The moment Annabelle posed that question, her words striking with the force of a physical blow, Gloria frowned. A faint, unsettling flicker of recognition sparked in the back of her mind, a memory, a possibility she had tried to bury. It was a thought, hazy at first, that slowly, inexorably, solidified into a horrifying certainty. And then her eyes went wide again, not with terror, but with a dawning, terrible understanding. "Oh my God, no," she thought to herself, the silent words a desperate prayer, a plea against the inevitable.

She bent down, her head dropping, and slammed her palm against her forehead, a sharp, stinging impact that did little to clear the sudden, overwhelming clarity in her mind. "Fuck," she said out loud, the expletive torn from her, raw and guttural.

Annabelle, witnessing the sudden shift in Gloria’s demeanor, the abrupt, self-inflicted gesture of despair, looked at her with a sudden, dawning fear. Her eyes widened, and in an instant, her earlier anger melted away, replaced by a surge of concern. She moved swiftly, wrapping her arms around Gloria, pulling her close in a tight, protective embrace. "Gloria, what's wrong? What is it?" she asked, her voice soft, urgent, laced with genuine worry.

Gloria shook her head, still bent over, the weight of her realization pressing down on her. Her voice, when it came, was a ragged whisper, thick with anguish. "I know who did it."

That particular sentence, spoken with such quiet, terrible certainty, struck Annabelle hard. It resonated through the tense air, cutting through the swirling emotions. "You know who did it?" she repeated, the words a disbelieving echo.

Gloria nodded her head, a slow, heavy movement. "Yes," she said, pushing herself up, her movements stiff, as if weighed down by an invisible burden. Tears, hot and stinging, began to well in her eyes, blurring her vision, then dripped unbidden down her cheeks, leaving warm trails. "I thought this was freaking over," she whispered, her voice cracking, laced with a profound sense of betrayal. "I thought this was just... Oh my God, why the hell would she want to do this?" The question was addressed to the universe, a desperate cry of incomprehension.

As she was speaking, her voice trembling with raw emotion, the door to the room slowly creaked open. Tristan, unaware of the explosive revelation unfolding before him, was slowly moving into the room. He frowned instantly, his brow furrowing as he registered the heavy tension in the air, the palpable sorrow, the suffocating depression that clung to the two women. It was a jarring contrast to the quiet intimacy he had expected. The sight made him grind his teeth together, a low, guttural sound of discomfort emanating from deep within his chest. He examined Gloria, his gaze sharp and questioning, trying to figure out what could possibly have caused such profound distress.

"Baby girl, are you okay?" he asked, his voice laced with concern, a soft query cutting through the silence.

At that moment, Annabelle’s head snapped up. Her eyes, filled with a simmering fury, locked onto Tristan. She was glaring at him with an intensity that could curdle milk, her body rigid with indignation. Without a word, she stood up, her movements swift and purposeful, and began to move over towards him, a predator closing in on its prey.

But Gloria, seeing the dangerous glint in Annabelle’s eyes, the set of her jaw, reacted instantly. She reached out, her hand finding Annabelle’s arm, gripping it tightly. She shook her head quickly, frantically, her eyes wide with a desperate plea. "Annabelle, no, no, please, don't do this. He is not the one. I can guarantee you. He is not the one, okay? I know who did it." Her voice was urgent, laced with a fear of what Annabelle might do.

Annabelle turned to her, her eyes blazing with an unholy fury. She yanked her arm free from Gloria’s grasp, her voice rising, sharp and accusatory. "You can't just stand there and be so stupid to not see the big picture in front of you! If you don't want to fight for yourself, fight for your dignity, and fight for everything you stand for, then I'm going to do it for you!" she declared, her voice ringing with righteous indignation. Gloria could tell, by the wildness in Annabelle’s eyes, the rigid set of her shoulders, that she was not in her right senses right now, consumed by a fierce, protective rage.

Tristan, on the other hand, was utterly confused. He stood frozen where he was, a bewildered spectator, watching the escalating scene between the two sisters. His mind was a complete blank slate, frantically trying to figure out what the hell he had done wrong.

Was she angry about the fact that they slept together overnight? Was she still really this furious about his staying with Gloria? He couldn't keep his questions to himself anymore.

"What is going on?" he demanded, his voice laced with genuine bewilderment.

Annabelle’s gaze, still burning with fury, snapped back to him. "You," she said, her voice rising, clear and loud, cutting through the tension. "You are fucking going on. Honestly, you really are, and I'm really, really beginning to regret you ever existed. I wish you never came across our way. I wish you never came into our life!"

"Annabelle, please stop!" Gloria was shouting out loud now, her voice raw with desperation, trying to intercede, to quell the storm. But Annabelle wasn't listening, her rage a deafening roar in her ears.

Tristan felt a cold knot of confusion tighten in his stomach. "What the hell is going on, guys? Please, I don't know, I don't understand." His voice was a plea, a genuine expression of his bewilderment.

"Quit trying to pretend as if you don't know!" Annabelle was shouting now, her voice reaching a fever pitch. She moved with a sudden, decisive motion, grabbing her phone from the chair where she had carelessly tossed it. Then, she moved closer to Tristan, her arm extended, flashing the screen, still displaying the damning video and headline, directly against his face. "Now tell me and deny that this isn't your fucking handiwork!"

Tristan had to move back, a reflexive jerk, due to the sheer force of her hand flying towards him, not just with the phone, but with the palpable threat of her rage. He flinched, a primal fear seizing him, the fear that she might actually slam the phone straight into his face. He took a deep, shuddering breath, trying to steady himself, to comprehend the madness unfolding before him. Then, his eyes, still wide with confusion, reluctantly focused on the screen. When he saw the video, the explicit images, the damning headlines, everything, his eyes went wide, reflecting the horror. His lips trembled, a silent testament to the shock that coursed through him. "Oh my God," he breathed, the words barely a whisper.

Annabelle scoffed, a harsh, dismissive sound. "Stop giving me that pretending look! Stop pretending as if you don't know about this! Stop trying to act as though you don't know what is going on!" She was shouting so loud now, her voice echoing in the confined space, vibrating with barely contained fury.

Tristan frowned, his gaze hardening as he looked at her. He grinded his teeth, a low, grating sound, feeling his own fury, a cold, dangerous wave, beginning to surge within him, pushing back against the confusion. "Okay, I accept," he said, his voice low, controlled, but edged with a dangerous calm.

Gloria and Annabelle looked at him with surprise, momentarily taken aback by his unexpected capitulation, his sudden shift in demeanor.

"I know what you think about me," Tristan continued, his voice gaining strength, a bitter edge entering it. "I get it. I am a very, very bad person. My reputation is not all that clean. I am perfectly so disgusting that you can actually take me as the devil myself. But come on," he scoffed, a humorless sound, "that doesn't mean you should just carry every single bad thing that happens and place it on me. I really don't understand what would make you think I would want to do this." He finished, his entire fury now sharp, honed, and focused, radiating outwards with an intensity that made Annabelle actually flinch. She looked at him with surprise, not quite expecting that reaction, that sudden, cold defiance.

Tristan took a deep breath, reining in his anger, and glanced at the phone once again. With a decisive movement, he took it from her hand, his fingers brushing hers, and shook his head, a gesture of profound disappointment and dawning understanding. "Oh my God, Avery," he said, his voice a low growl, laden with a complex mix of anger and regret. He grinded his teeth again, the sound harsh in the silence.

Annabelle felt a fresh wave of confusion wash over her. "Who is Avery?" she asked, her gaze flicking from Tristan’s furious face back to Gloria, who was still looking at the ground, trembling, unable to speak up, lost in her own private hell. Annabelle’s eyes were wide, demanding answers. "I need to understand what the hell is going on here! Who is Avery?" she said out loud, her voice laced with an edge of desperation.

Gloria exhaled, a long, shuddering breath, finally finding her voice, though it was weak and strained. "Avery," she whispered, the name a bitter taste on her tongue, "Avery is his adopted daughter."

Annabelle’s eyes went wide, a new realization dawning, connecting the dots of past betrayals. "Oh my God, the adopted daughter," she exclaimed, her voice thick with disgust, "the one that he cheated on you with, that he went to fuck!" She diverged a focused, accusatory look at Tristan, her gaze piercing.

Tristan met her gaze, his jaw tight. "Look, that ended a very long time ago, okay? That is no longer happening, and it stopped when Gloria got angry with me. I just couldn't go along with it."

"Yes!" Annabelle interrupted, her voice sharp, dismissive of his explanation. "Of course you did, but clearly she is not happy, and she's unsatisfied, and now she is trying to retaliate against the two of you! Can't you see that this is still your fault?" Her voice rose, fueled by a fresh wave of righteous anger. "If you hadn't allowed your fucked up self to get entangled or get involved in any wrong way with your adopted daughter, would this have happened? if you had maintained your dignity and been the father figure you were supposed to be to her, Would all of this have happened?" Annabelle shouted, her voice echoing with the force of her conviction, as she moved closer to Tristan, invading his personal space. "Tell me, Tristan, tell me, tell me how this is not still your fucking fault!"

Tristan closed his eyes, a silent battle raging within him. He inhaled deeply, then exhaled slowly, trying to compose himself, to find an answer to Annabelle’s relentless accusations. He ran his fingers through his forehead, raking them through his hair in a gesture of profound weariness and frustration. "I don't know," he admitted, the words barely a whisper, a stark confession of his own complicity, his own failure.

He ignored Annabelle, her angry words now fading into a background hum of noise. He moved around her, his focus shifting entirely to Gloria, and began to walk towards her, a new determination setting his jaw. Annabelle, seething with rage, her body trembling with the intensity of her anger, watched him. But despite her fury, she stood where she was, rooted to the spot, observing his movements, her eyes narrowed.

"Look, this is bad, Gloria," Tristan said, his voice softer now, directed solely at her. He reached her, his presence a comforting, if complicated, anchor. "And I understand how difficult it is going to be for the both of us, but don't worry. We are going to get through it," he promised, his voice firm, imbued with a nascent strength.

Annabelle scoffed, a harsh, disbelieving sound, and shook her head, her eyes wide with incredulity. "Get through it? Are you seriously kidding me right now? I don't think it's practically going to be possible for any of you to be able to walk through the streets anywhere in this country because, are you freaking kidding me? Your faces are everywhere, on all the billboards, probably all over the entire city! So anywhere you go, people will recognize you, and you are definitely going to be a laughing stock. It's a public disgrace! How the hell do you want to escape from this?" Her words, though harsh, carried the weight of undeniable truth.

Gloria and Tristan looked caught off guard, the enormity of Annabelle's assessment washing over them. They stood where they were, their entire bodies shaking, the cold reality of their predicament settling in.

Tristan closed his eyes again, a brief moment of internal struggle. He inhaled deeply, then, once more, raked his fingers through his forehead, a gesture of intense concentration. Then, with a slow, deliberate movement, he grinded his teeth together, a sound of resolve. The both of them suddenly saw a strong, unshakeable determination move through his face, hardening his features, replacing the earlier confusion and fear.

"I understand," he said, his voice low but resolute, forcing Gloria to slowly look up at him, her tear-filled eyes meeting his. "But I will handle this," he declared, his gaze unwavering, a silent promise in his eyes.

He then moved past the both of them, his steps firm and purposeful, and walked back towards the bedrooms, leaving Gloria and Annabelle alone in the sitting room, enveloped in a stunned silence. Annabelle looked confused, her anger momentarily forgotten, replaced by a fresh wave of bewilderment. She turned to Gloria, her eyes seeking answers. "What is going on? What does he want to do?" she asked, her voice hushed.

But Gloria didn't know what to say right now. Her mind was in shambles, a whirlwind of shattered dreams, public humiliation, and a terrifying, uncertain future.
