Chapter 213: THE ECHO OF SCANDAL
CHAPTER 213. THE ECHO OF SCANDAL
Gloria’s mind reeled, a frantic hamster on a wheel that spun faster than her thoughts could keep up. She felt adrift, unable to anchor herself to any definitive desire or decision regarding the chaotic maelstrom that had just erupted around her. Her eyes, unfocused and stinging, reflexively squeezed shut, her eyelids biting together without conscious control, a physical manifestation of the anguish that seized her. Her lower lip, caught between her teeth, bore the brunt of her internal struggle, a dull ache mirroring the deeper throb in her chest.
Just moments ago, Tristan had emerged, a stark contrast to his earlier, more relaxed demeanor. Now, he was impeccably dressed, his attire signaling a return to the public persona he so often inhabited. The glint of car keys in his hand was a mundane detail, yet it underscored the abruptness of his departure, the sudden shift from intimacy to urgency. He had paused, his presence a fleeting anchor in the storm.
"I know that this is very, very terrible, okay?" His voice, though strained, held a determined edge. "Believe me, you're not the only one affected by this. I am also affected, but I promise you, I'm going to handle this to the letter." His words, meant to reassure, felt like a distant echo in Gloria’s ears. His hands, warm and firm, settled on Gloria’s shoulders, a brief, grounding touch that she clung to even as her mind rebelled. She lifted her gaze, her tear-filled eyes meeting his. He leaned in, and a feather-light kiss brushed her forehead, a silent vow, a tender farewell. "I'm going to be back," he murmured, his eyes holding hers for a fraction of a second longer, a silent plea for understanding, for faith. Then, he turned, his movements swift and decisive, and strode out of the building. The front door swung shut behind him with a soft, definitive click, a sound that seemed to seal away the last vestiges of normalcy.
A profound, suffocating silence descended, stretching out, long and heavy, like a shroud. It pressed in on Gloria, amplifying the frantic beat of her own heart. The air itself seemed to thicken, charged with unspoken fears and the lingering scent of Tristan's cologne. Annabelle, meanwhile, had sunk onto the plush sofa, her earlier composure fracturing. Her foot began to tap, a relentless, nervous rhythm against the polished wooden floor, each beat a percussive counterpoint to the quiet desperation that filled the room.
Gloria remained rooted to the spot where Tristan had left her, a statue carved from shock and disbelief. Her arms, instinctively, folded across her chest, a self-protective gesture. Her mind, a kaleidoscope of shattered thoughts, spun uncontrollably. She began to pace, a slow, agitated shuffle back and forth, each step a futile attempt to outrun the news that had just crashed down upon them. What did she want to do about this? How could she possibly continue to bear the weight of such a public humiliation? How was she supposed to accept the brutal, undeniable truth that her carefully constructed world had not merely shifted, but had gone utterly, irrevocably, freaking, and frankly, fucking crazy? The sheer enormity of it threatened to consume her.
With a soft sigh that was more a gasp, she closed her eyes, seeking a brief respite from the harsh reality. She leaned against the cool, smooth surface of the nearby wall, its solidity a small comfort against the tremor that had begun in her lips, spreading through her entire body. "This is messed up," she finally managed to whisper, her voice thin and reedy.
Annabelle, her tapping foot stilled, looked up, her expression a weary blend of sympathy and exasperation. "Tell me about it," she replied, her tone flat, devoid of surprise. This was, after all, exactly what she had predicted.
"I'm never going to be able to go out anymore," Gloria lamented, the words a fresh wave of despair.
Annabelle let out a short, sharp breath, a sound that was almost a scoff, and rolled her eyes. "I told you. I told you countless times, Gloria. I don't know what possessed you, what made you think for a single second that this entanglement, this whole affair with him, would have been the right thing in the first place." Her voice grew sharper, each word a cutting indictment. "But here we are. This is a very, very big mess up, Gloria, and right now, you are facing the consequences. The full, undeniable, public consequences."
She paused, her gaze softening slightly, a flicker of genuine concern breaking through her frustration. "If, indeed, you really, truly love him, and you care about him as much as you claim, and if this is everything you want, then you have to bear it. You have to endure this. Because I, Gloria, I have no power, no authority of such kind, to counter this kind of media frenzy. It is truly, truly crazy. And because of the kind of person Tristan is, because of how incredibly popular he is, his name, his face, his hashtags are all over the city, all over the world. So, yes, you can definitely expect that this news is not just going to be popular in our little corner of the city, but everywhere around the globe. You can’t escape this kind of news. This," Annabelle concluded, gesturing broadly with one hand, "is precisely what made it go viral."
The pressure in Gloria's chest intensified, a crushing weight that stole her breath. It was too much, far too much for her to hold onto, to contain within herself. Finally, utterly defeated, she gave up the fight against the rising tide of emotion. Her legs buckled, and she collapsed against a nearby armchair, its soft upholstery offering little solace. Burying her face into her palms, she surrendered to the inevitable, her shoulders shaking as she began to sob, the raw, guttural sounds of her grief filling the oppressive silence.
Annabelle exhaled, a long, weary sigh that seemed to carry the weight of her own frustrations. She rose from the sofa, her movements deliberate, and walked over to Gloria. She sat down beside her, the springs of the armchair creaking softly under her weight, and gently wrapped her arms around her friend.
The embrace was firm, offering a fragile anchor in Gloria’s storm. "Hey, it's going to be fine, okay? Just relax for a moment. Take a deep breath. It's going to be fine," she murmured, her voice softer now, laced with a genuine desire to comfort. "We are going to figure out a way around this, Gloria. We always do. I just really don't know… it's going to be incredibly hard for you to move around the city from now on. The paparazzi, the public scrutiny… it will be relentless."
She pulled back slightly, her eyes searching Gloria's tear-streaked face. "But I was thinking, what if we approach this differently? How about we do it this way? Let's move to a faraway place. I know a place, a secluded haven, that you might not really want to go, not yet anyway, but I think that's precisely the first place you need to visit right now. A place where you can breathe, where you can hide."
Gloria remained silent for a long moment, the only sound the ragged catches of her breath. After a few minutes, she slowly shook her head, a small, defiant gesture. "No, I can't," she whispered, her voice thick with unshed tears. This forced Annabelle to frown, her brow furrowing in renewed exasperation.
"I don't want to leave Tristan behind," Gloria continued, her voice gaining a fragile strength. "I don't want him to be the only one to have to go through this. The weight of it, the pressure… it's going to be too much for one person. I want to be there for him, Annabelle. I want us to be there for each other, to face this together."
Annabelle stared at her, completely baffled, her mouth slightly agape. The absurdity of Gloria's unwavering loyalty, even in the face of such overwhelming disaster, struck her as almost insane. "The fact that you are still thinking about him," Annabelle began, her voice rising in incredulity, "even in all this mess, even with your life imploding, is making me feel so crazy, Gloria. Are you okay at all? Are you truly, genuinely okay?"
Gloria closed her eyes again, taking a ragged, shaky breath, trying to exhale some of the crushing anxiety. "Yeah, you can think what you want to think, Annabelle, okay? Reason everything you want to reason, twist the facts to fit your narrative, but I don't know. I just…"
"Enough of this, Gloria!" Annabelle snapped, her patience finally snapping. She stood up abruptly, her movements sharp and decisive, the armchair springs groaning in protest. "It is not enough that you are going through all this mess, this public humiliation, all because of him. Your family is separated, Gloria! You all have broken apart because of your choices! Your husband, David, is struggling, fighting tooth and nail to take custody for your son! We haven't even settled that agonizing legal battle yet, and now you have to face this! All because of who? One man! One fleeting, ill-advised affair!"
Annabelle paced a few steps, her hands gesturing emphatically. "I understand that David was wrong. I understand that he treated you badly. That he also freaking cheated on you, yes, I know. That was why he didn't give you the attention that you needed, the love you deserved. But you do know, deep down, that if you hadn't gotten entangled with Tristan, all of this would have gone normally. All of this would have gone the right way. You would have separated from David, lived peacefully, perhaps even found happiness, without having to encounter Tristan and his toxic adopted daughter of an individual! Do you realize that, Gloria? Do you truly, deeply understand the extent of your choices?"
Gloria shook her head, tears still silently tracking paths down her cheeks. "I'm not ready for this discussion right now, Annabelle. Please." She began to rise, seeking to escape the painful confrontation, but Annabelle, quicker and stronger in her resolve, pushed her back down, forcing her to sit.
"No, Gloria. This can't happen. Do you hear me?" Annabelle’s voice was firm, unyielding. "You can't avoid this conversation any longer. What are you trying to do? Bury your head in the sand? You need to face the fact and face the truth, Gloria. This is the point in time where you tell yourself that you need to make the right decision. Involving yourself with Tristan this long is slowly beginning to kill you. It is destroying your life, piece by agonizing piece. It is staining your entire reputation, your good name, and the name of our family. You have to end it right now, even though it's already too late to avoid the scandal. It's better now than before it becomes even worse, before it becomes irreparable."
Gloria swallowed hard, a dry, painful gulp. Her hair, damp with sweat and tears, clung to the sides of her face. "But…" she began, a desperate plea forming on her lips.
"There is no 'but,' Gloria!" Annabelle interrupted, her voice sharp as a knife. "Come on, get over yourself! What the hell is your problem? You have no choice in this matter. None! I am calling our family home in Montana. I'm sure they will be expecting us for a hearing, a full accounting, because of all this and the scandal it has brought upon our name. So get ready to visit them soon. And you are carrying your son. He is coming with us. I'm going to ensure that I use all of our family's power and riches, every connection we have, to make absolutely sure that there is no way in hell that David gets custody of our John, okay? So he's definitely coming with us. We need to move out of this country, out of this city entirely, to the most secluded place we have – our family home on the island. Do you hear me, Gloria? Father will be expecting us, and I'm sure he's going to call anytime soon. He'll want answers, and he'll want action."
Gloria closed her eyes again, exhaling a long, shuddering breath. "I can't do this, Annabelle," she whispered, the words barely audible. But Annabelle was glaring at her, her eyes blazing with an unshakeable resolve.
"It's not like you have any choice anyway," Annabelle said, her voice devoid of sympathy, and then she turned around, pulling out her phone and typing briskly, already making arrangements. Gloria exhaled again, pressing her palm against her forehead, a desperate attempt to quell the throbbing pain behind her eyes.
Oh my God, she thought to herself, her mind a whirlwind of fear and despair. All she could think about was Tristan. What had he gone to do? How did he intend to battle this alone, against such a formidable, global media storm? She really didn't want to leave him. She desperately wanted to hang on to his assurance, that promise he'd made that he would be back, that everything would have been better if the both of them would fight this together. But right now, she didn't know what to think anymore.
What if Annabelle was right? What if everything, every moment with Tristan, had been a complete and utter mistake? What if she shouldn't have gotten herself entangled with him in the first place? This was the biggest, largest scandal she could ever imagine. She knew, with a chilling certainty, that her parents wouldn't even be able to be here, to stand by her, such was the shame and public scrutiny. And of course, she knew that David would be happy wherever he was. He would be rejoicing, celebrating his victory, that he had won, that he had made a very wise choice detaching himself from her, making her feel like a very bad person, a pariah. Of course, her family was definitely going to call him, to ask questions, to find out what was going on, to understand the depths of this public disgrace. Everything fell crashing on top of her in full force, a catastrophic avalanche of consequences, something which she could not bear as she grinded her teeth together, her entire body trembling with the strain. "I can't do this," she muttered to herself, the words a desperate, broken prayer. "I fucking can't do this."
Annabelle came back a few minutes later, her phone tucked away, her expression now softer, tinged with a weariness that Gloria hadn't seen before. She looked at Gloria, truly looked at her, then closed her eyes, inhaling deeply and exhaling slowly. She moved deliberately, slowly, towards her friend, her earlier fury replaced by a somber understanding. "I understand, Gloria," she said, her voice a low, compassionate murmur. This unexpected shift in tone forced Gloria to look up, her tear-filled eyes meeting Annabelle's. "I get it. You feel so consumed by him. You both of you… you matched together in so many ways. Your addiction, your yearning for something more, plus his darkness, his fire, the strength you feel for him, the way he makes you feel alive. You both feel like you've met your perfect match, your soulmate, something truly unique. I get it. I truly do."
Annabelle knelt before Gloria, her gaze earnest and direct. "But at this point, Gloria, I need you to realize that entangling with him, continuing this, is destroying your life. It might have felt like the right thing, getting connected with him, but maybe this is not just the right way it was supposed to happen. You both didn't go about it the right way, did you? You bypassed so many rules, so many boundaries. So right now, it's messed up beyond repair. I don't think this kind of fairy tale, born from scandal and secrecy, is the kind that ends up well, that ends up good and complete. It's a tragedy waiting to fully unfold. So you have to face the facts. We have to leave, okay? It's destroying you, Gloria, and he is really not the right person for you, not in this context, not under these circumstances. We just have to go." Her words, though gentle, carried the weight of finality. This forced Gloria to close her eyes tight, her entire body shaking uncontrollably, her lips trembling with a fresh wave of silent sobs.
"I can't," she whispered again, a raw, broken plea.
Annabelle closed her eyes and exhaled, her own frustration warring with her deep concern for her friend. "Think about everything, Gloria. Truly think about it. What is giving you this boldness, this unwavering certainty that he has actually changed? What is giving you the confidence that he has actually stopped whatever nonsense he was doing with that so-called Avery girl you mentioned, his adopted daughter? I mean, look at this, Gloria. She is still in the picture, isn't she? She’s the one who unleashed this scandal! If indeed everything has ended, if indeed everything has stopped between them, she wouldn't be thinking of coming back to retaliate, to do everything she can to come in between you two, to unleash this devastating scandal, to release whatever nonsense this was to the media. Come on, Gloria! It means she is keeping tabs on the both of you. She obviously still has that connection with him, that hold, and she doesn't want to let it go. So what the hell are you still doing here? Why can't you be so wise enough to see the truth? Don't be so blind and just accept what is obviously, painfully, right in front of you."
