Chapter 180 Edward Agrees to Divorce!
Chapter 180 Edward Agrees to Divorce!
Violet's car pulled up in front of the Hart family's old house just before ten.
She got out and walked to the gate to ring the bell.
The Hart family's old butler opened the door. He looked surprised when he saw Violet. "Mrs. Hart? Why are you here so late? Is something wrong?"
"Has Grandpa gone to bed?" Violet asked.
She was really going to get a divorce, but before making the final call, she wanted to be straight with Edward.
Grandpa loved her the most, and she didn't want to let Edward down.
"The old man hasn't slept yet. He's reading in the study." The butler stepped aside to let her in.
Violet went to the study with the butler. He knocked on the door, and Edward's strong voice came from inside. "Come in."
When she pushed the door open, Edward was sitting behind the desk with a book in his hand and reading glasses on. He took off his glasses, smiled, and waved her over. "Violet, you're here? Why'd you come all this way so late?"
Violet walked up to the desk but didn't sit.
She looked at Edward's kind face. Her throat felt blocked, like it was stuffed with cotton. It took a few seconds before she could speak. "Grandpa, I'm sorry. I let you down. I'm divorcing Adrian."
No one had approved of the marriage except Edward, who had truly wished them well.
Edward's smile froze. He put the book down, pushed himself up from the desk, walked around it to Violet, and frowned. "Violet, did something happen? Did that kid Adrian bully you again? Tell me, and I'll sort it out for you."
"It has nothing to do with him. I'm just tired." Violet's voice was flat, her face blank. "Grandpa, I know this will upset you, but I can't keep lying to myself. I've decided."
Violet lowered her head and said sadly, "Grandpa, this marriage was a mistake from the start. We've been together seven years, and he's never loved me. I used to think if I tried hard enough and held on, he'd eventually notice me, but..."
She paused. "I waited seven years and got nothing. Sorry, I can't wait anymore."
Edward's face darkened. After a long silence, he spoke in a pleading tone. "Violet, what about Theo..."
"Theo likes Ms. Quinn more than me." Violet cut him off. "So I'll leave custody to Adrian. I won't fight for it."
Edward froze. He hadn't expected that. He knew she looked calm but was hurting badly inside.
"Violet, all these years, it's our Hart family who's let you down." Edward's eyes turned red. He patted her shoulder gently. "I've been thinking a lot too."
"If I hadn't faked being sick, you two would've divorced a long time ago." Edward sounded helpless.
Violet stared at him in surprise. "Faked being sick?"
Then she got it. Everything the old man did was to keep their marriage going.
Edward looked up, guilt in his eyes. "Violet, Grandpa knows it was wrong, but I couldn't just watch you two split. I set up your marriage with Adrian myself. I really like you. You're a good kid, and I'm sorry."
"I want to apologize. I was selfish. I kept giving Adrian chances, hoping he'd appreciate what he had, but I didn't think about how much it hurt you."
Edward sighed. "Violet, Adrian lost his parents young. I raised him. He's quiet and thinks too much, but he knows everything. I forced your marriage on him, so I let him down too. That's why I tried to make it up to you both. I figured if you stayed together long enough, he'd see how good you are."
As he spoke, Edward wiped his eyes.
Violet took a deep breath. Her chest felt crushed by a rock, making it hard to breathe. "Grandpa, I know you did it for me. You knew I liked Adrian, so you kept making chances for us. I'll always be grateful."
"But I've tried hard enough all these years." Violet looked down. "Adrian doesn't love me. That's something that won't change."
Edward stayed quiet, feeling sorry for Violet and disappointed in Adrian.
After a long time, he spoke slowly, his voice tired but resigned. "Violet, have you really made up your mind?"
He couldn't bring himself to ask her to give Adrian another chance. He knew Adrian's ways best.
"I have." Violet looked at Edward's old face. Her eyes were wet, but the tears didn't fall. "Grandpa, thank you for looking after me all these years. I'll always remember your kindness."
She lifted her head and forced the tears back. "Grandpa, even if Adrian and I divorce, you'll still be the grandpa I respect most. That won't change. If you don't mind, I'll still come visit."
"Why would I mind? I'd be happy if you came!" Edward was moved. He touched his wet eyes and muttered, "Child, in the end, Grandpa let you down."
Violet shook her head. "No, Grandpa, don't blame yourself."
Finally, she just bowed to Edward, then turned and walked out of the study.
Edward stood by the desk, watching her back disappear. He grabbed the phone from the corner of the desk and called Adrian.
It rang twice before Adrian picked up.
"Grandpa?" Adrian's voice came through.
"Adrian." Edward paused. He didn't feel like scolding him. His voice was rough. "Violet was just here. She said she wants a divorce."
Silence on the other end for a few seconds. Adrian asked quietly, "What else did she say?"
"She said she doesn't want anything, not even Theo."
Adrian gripped the phone hard, his knuckles white. "So what do you mean?"
"I respect her choice." Edward added, "Adrian, I can't control you anymore. If you want to marry that Wells girl later, go ahead. As long as you're happy."
Edward hung up.
On the other end, Adrian sat in silence. All these years, he'd been waiting for Edward's approval.
Now that he had it, he didn't feel happy.
