Chapter 181: The True Colors of the Wells Family!
Adrian sat at the president's desk with Violet's signed divorce papers spread out in front of him.
He held a pen, the tip hovering over the signature line, but couldn't bring himself to sign.
Once he signed, their seven-year mess would finally be over.
But if he didn't?
He had no reason not to. He used to hide behind his grandfather as an excuse, but now...
Adrian closed his eyes and finally put the pen down. He signed slowly, one stroke at a time. When he finished the last stroke, he closed the document, slipped it into a file bag, and stood up. He was about to call Roman to deliver it when his phone rang.
The caller ID showed the private detective's name.
Adrian answered. "Hello?"
"Sorry to bother you out of the blue, Mr. Hart," the detective said quickly. "I just found some new information related to the Wells family."
Adrian's grip on the phone tightened. "Go on."
"Last time you asked me to check Miguel's transfer records. I dug deeper into where the money came from and found the Wells family has done more than just that one dirty thing over the years." The detective paused. "First, Elsie's kidney disease is fake."
Adrian's brows shot together. "What?"
"I got the hospital's internal records. Elsie was admitted, but her condition was never as serious as the Wells family claimed. The so-called rejection reactions and critical condition notices were all faked. I talked to the nurse who treated her. She admitted the Wells family paid her to keep quiet, but she kept proof."
"Elsie did get a match and there was a suitable kidney available, but her kidney function never reached the point of failure. All those claims about her being critically ill were staged by the Wells family after bribing the medical staff."
Adrian's knuckles turned white. "What else?"
"There's something else you asked me to look into—Caleb drugging Ms. Reed. Caleb first claimed it was just a drunken impulse, but I found a call record. Three days before the incident, Landon and Caleb talked for forty minutes. I recovered some of the deleted chat logs. Landon gave Caleb instructions to get Violet drunk, take her to a hotel room, and take photos to blackmail her."
"Also, Landon contacted a security guard at the hotel and paid him off to turn off the surveillance on that floor for three hours."
"Plus, Caleb and Ms. Quinn's relationship isn't simple. They were already involved while studying abroad and often spent the night together."
Adrian held the phone in silence for a long moment.
"Mr. Hart?" the detective asked carefully.
"I got it," Adrian said calmly. "Organize all the evidence into a formal document and send it to me."
"Got it, Mr. Hart."
After the call ended, the office went quiet again.
Adrian looked down at the file bag containing the divorce papers. He was silent for a few seconds, then reached up and tore the bag open. The sound of ripping kraft paper was loud in the quiet room.
Instead of pulling out the papers, he tore the entire bag in half, folded it, and tore it again. He pushed the pieces aside, asked his secretary to print out the evidence, grabbed his coat, and left Hart Group for the hospital.
That night at eleven, Adrian's car stopped outside the Wells family villa at Verdant Manor.
When he rang the bell, the butler answered.
"Mr. Hart? It's so late. Is there an emergency?" The butler looked surprised, but after seeing Adrian's icy expression, he quickly stepped aside. "Mr. and Mrs. Wells are in the living room."
Adrian walked in without changing his shoes and went straight to the living room.
Robert was sitting on the sofa watching TV. Elsie leaned against him, holding a cup of hot milk. Quinn sat in an armchair flipping through a magazine.
All three froze when they saw Adrian walk in with a cold face.
"Adrian?" Quinn reacted first. She put down the magazine and stood up, smiling gently. "Why did you come so suddenly? Why didn't you tell me first?"
Elsie also set down her cup. "Adrian's here. Have a seat. Robert, get Adrian some tea."
"No need," Adrian said, standing in the middle of the living room. His eyes swept over their faces one by one before landing on Elsie's. "Elsie, are you feeling better?"
Elsie's smile stiffened. She coughed twice. "Same as always. The doctor said I still need to be monitored for a while."
"Is that so?" Adrian took a few sheets of paper from his inner coat pocket and handed them over. "Then explain this."
Elsie took the papers and looked down. Her face went deathly pale.
They were copies of the hospital's internal records, clearly showing her actual condition assessment. Her kidney function had never reached the level requiring an urgent transplant. The so-called rejection reactions were completely made up.
Robert leaned over for a look. He collapsed onto the sofa like his bones had been pulled out.
Quinn reacted fastest. She rushed forward. "Adrian, where did these come from? Did someone fake them to frame us?"
Adrian finally looked at Quinn, his eyes ice-cold. "Fake them? I had experts from three hospitals compare Elsie's original medical records. Every single one leads to the same conclusion. All those rejection reactions and critical condition notices you cried about were fake."
Quinn's lips moved. Her eyes quickly turned red. "Adrian, listen to me. Mom really was sick, just not that serious. We were just... too scared you'd stop caring..."
"What about this, then?" Adrian pulled out another document and held it in front of Quinn. "Did you know Landon planned for Caleb to assault Violet?"
Quinn's eyes fell on the call record. The color drained from her face bit by bit.
"I didn't..." Quinn opened her mouth to argue.
"You knew," Adrian cut her off. "Not only did you know, you helped Caleb cover it up afterward. Quinn, do I need to lay out everything between you and Caleb one by one?"
The living room fell deathly quiet.
Robert slumped on the sofa. Elsie's cup slipped from her hand and hit the floor, spilling milk everywhere.
Quinn stood there, tears streaming down her face. She reached out to grab Adrian's arm. "Adrian, I did all this because I love you too much. I just wanted to be with you. I was scared of losing you. I had no choice..."
"Enough." Adrian stepped aside to avoid her hand.
He looked at Quinn's face—the face he'd once been drawn to—but now it only felt unfamiliar.
