Chapter 47
The ballroom was a tapestry of light and laughter, its opulence accented by the extravagant golden chandelier that hung majestically from the center of the ceiling, casting a warm glow over the guests below. Donna sat at a table in the corner, her pulse racing with a mixture of exhilaration and trepidation. The music swelled, and the atmosphere was imbued with an intoxicating energy, but hers was a different kind of anticipation.
"Tonight is the night, Matilda," Donna said with a whisper, fingers beating to a rhythm on the cool table surface, eyes on Lilith, who twirled across the dance floor and let out a sweet peel of laughter. "Tonight, it's going to be different."
"Positive," Matilda returned. "What if it don't go right? That is a big chandelier.
"Precisely," Donna returned, leaning in closer, her voice a whisper laced with intensity. "If all goes well, Lilith won't even see it coming. And it's about time she did learn she wasn't invincible-not after the mess she has made.
As the night wore on, the company continued to bask in the season of delight, heedless of what brewed beneath the waves. Kent stood among the many, too engrossed with talking to others to even pay much attention that Donna's scheme had set into motion. He seemed spellbound by Lilith yet, his laughter so effortless spilling into the air as he caught her eye across the ballroom.
There was a sudden edge in Donna's heart, as an unsettling mixture of jealousy and determinateness washed over her—a thing she knew only all too well. The swirly fog that jammed her brain did talk volumes of Kent's all-readiness to shift attention onto Lilith. If he just knew who she was, this wouldn't be an issue.
In the background, Matilda's eyes darted around the room, keeping a watchful eye on Lilith as she danced, the air thickening with tension as the moment drew near. Donna had secured the mechanics of her plan—a discreet lever hidden behind the draped curtains that, when pulled, would loosen the chandelier and send it crashing downward. All she needed was the right moment, the right distraction.
"She's going to be under there any minute. You ready?" Matilda asked, her lip nervously bitten.
"Just like we practiced," Donna replied, the determination crackling in the air. She felt the weight of the night upon her, each breath a reminder of the stakes involved. The longer she lost to jealousy, the more she felt the fabric of her life unraveling around her. She couldn't let this opportunity slip away.
The band shifted to a lively waltz, drawing the crowd into a synchronized dance. Donna’s heart raced as Lilith was gracefully guided by her partner toward the gilded chandelier, golden lights dancing in her dark hair. Seduction flickered in her gaze like the shimmering lights above.
"Now," Donna whispered, trying to act indifferent to the people around her as she stood up and began to make her way stealthily to the back of the room. Her fingers touched the lever, and her heart started racing incredibly. The moment was electrifying yet terrifying.
As she prepared herself, Kent looked at Lilith and gestured for her to come to him. "You have to see this! The chandelier is amazing! Come on!
"Oh, it's lovely!" Lilith glowed, her eyes alight with pleasures. And as they neared the golden structure together, Donna's heart was racing, and she could hardly catch her breath; the anxiety mounted like an impending storm.
She stepped forward to stand by the curtain and waited for Kent to take his back to her. In an instant, it all came into place: Lilith swirled closer, laughing, her partner whirling her around with grace.
Just a bit closer," Donna muttered to herself, her finger hovering over the lever.
**CRACK!**
An ominous sound grazed the air, echoing like a whisper of fate. Panic surged through the crowd, rippling outward as the chandelier started to loosen, teetering for a moment before it fell, glinting menacingly as it fell.
"Watch out!" A voice cried among the guests, suddenly aware of the looming danger.
Every moment dragged, and time was slowed; Donna's heart rushed as she watched Lilith lock eyes with her in one split second of realization. "Lilith, run!" she yelled.
Suddenly, chaos erupted around her, the intense gasps, shrieks, and steps of feet moving helter-skelter, the guests trying to rush from the impending catastrophe. Lilith, however, froze in place, a deer in headlights for a heartbeat. Kent, instinctively, reacted ahead, lunging forward with arms outstretched.
In a surge of adrenaline and pure instinct, Kent crashed into Lilith, embracing her with a desperate clasp just as the chandelier fell to the floor with a shattering crash, sending shards of glass flying through the air like lethal rain. The din drowned out everything but the earsplitting screech of metal and the collective gasp of horror from the crowd.
Lilith fell, but Kent held her tight, and she was safe from the wreckage. With all of his strength, he pushed her away from the falling chandelier and shielded her, landing hard against the polished floor with her beneath him.
The hall was thick with dust and confusion; the music screeched to a halt, leaving shocked faces frozen in disbelief. During the calamity, there was an eruption of applause, marked by dense tension, since it seemed no one knew what actually happened.
Lilith, are you okay?" Kent muttered under his breath as he drew back, eyes scanning her for any injuries. Lilith shook herself, her eyes wide with shock but unscathed.
"Yes, yes! I think I'm fine!" she managed to gasp out, looking at the wreckage in disbelief, her heart racing due to all the adrenaline.
The crowd erupted into action then, shifting from awe to frantic urgency, trying to help those around them. Donna stood frozen in moral turmoil, watching Kent cling to Lilith with a protectiveness that felt like a dagger to her heart.
Chaos reigned inside her mind; though she had gotten what she needed, it twisted the success in her plan into so many shades of darker tones. Guilt began swelling inside her heart as the crowd burst with words of concern for Lilith, their murmurs on the bravery of Kent acting in this manner.
"Are you alright?" he asked once again, tucking a strand of Lilith's hair back behind her shoulder while checking on her condition.
"I'm fine—thank you! I thought I was…" She trailed off, shaken, her heart still racing from the encounter.
And then, behind them, a voice sliced through the crowd, pulling attention like a taut string. "What happened? Who's responsible for this?" The authoritative tone belonged to an older man in a sharp suit, visibly shaken yet demanding. He stepped forward, escalating the concern of the crowd into an uproar.
"I saw it!" a guest rushed forward, eyes wide in disbelief. "A girl at the table by the wall… I think she knocked that chandelier loose!"
The gathering shifted, whispers cascading through the room as accusing fingers began to point toward Donna.
"Hey!" Matilda shouted from behind. "That's not right! It was an accident! She didn't mean for this to happen!"
But in an instant, the panic quieted Matilda as the crowd's attention turned to the unfolding drama, their gaze sharpening in her direction. Kent's eyes naturally flickered to where the chaos had initiated, instinctively searching for the culprit, and Donna could almost feel the heat of his gaze pierce her.
The man took another step forward, eyes narrowing with scrutiny. "Who is responsible? We need to take care of this before it gets out of hand.
At that moment, Donna felt her heart racing with the fear of desperation. She pushed the limit in more ways than one, and had almost killed the person she ostensibly despised. The karmic twist held her tight in its clutches, and the idea that her plot to eliminate Lilith had instead simply served to expose her mistake caused her to be consumed with dread.
"I… I'm responsible," Kent suddenly said, making everyone stare at him. "Lilith was in grave danger. I did what any person would have done." He stood tall, his voice firm as he faced the crowd, as if shielding Lilith from the tsunami of judgment.
"You can't do that!" Donna whispered, her face draining of blood. "You can't take the blame for me!"
"I'll report what I saw," another one joined in, and soon others stepped up with murmurs of agreement, conversations igniting behind the chaos.
"Someone needs to be held accountable! That was reckless!" another voice rose, cutting through the gathering like a blade.
But as tensions escalated, Kent kept his focus on Lilith, unaware of Donna's conflicted emotions swirling beneath the surface. "I won't let anyone else be blamed for something I could change. It was an accident—a freak occurrence."
Freak occurrence? That chandelier was loosened on purpose!" The older man retorted, looking backward to the corner where Donna could hardly bear to breathe. "I want to know who pulled that lever. And I can tell you it wasn't an accident!
"Everyone calm down!" Lilith said, finally finding her voice. She stepped forward, holding out her hands to quell the growing concern. "It doesn't matter who caused it. The important thing is that no one was hurt!" She looked toward Kent, gratitude shining through her gaze.
Yet the room remained tense, uncertain, whispers spilling forth as all eyes turned once more awkwardly toward the table where Donna had been sitting.
As if thickening gaseous air seemed to circle thickly around her, no one was ready or willing to let loose such a suspicion against her. It left her out in the open between the two worlds, vengeance on one and guilt on another.
"I know who sent me," boomed an authoritative voice into the hubbub and called everybody's attention onto himself. "The person who sent me was Miss Donna."
A sharp intake of breath resounded through the room, shock flickering across every face.
Donna's heart faltered as dread seeped through her veins, realization dawning like a suffocating tidal wave. The weight of her actions hung over the ballroom like a dark cloud, wrapping her in its cold emb
race.
She was trapped, and the stares of others bore down on her with the force of an avalanche.
