Chapter 117: The Unexpected Decision
Chapter 117: The Unexpected Decision
The courtroom was packed, the air thick with anticipation.
Journalists lined the back row, pens poised to capture the final moments of a trial that had held the entire city in suspense.
Low murmurs floated through the audience as people whispered theories about the outcome.
Some believed Veronica Fury would somehow walk free, while others felt her day of reckoning had finally come.
Nicole sat at the plaintiff's table, her face unreadable. Dressed in a sharp black suit, she looked composed, even graceful, but inside her, a storm was raging.
She had fought long and hard for this day. Years of pain, buried trauma, and gathering courage had brought her to this very moment.
And now, everything hung in the balance.
Her lawyer, a sharp and no-nonsense woman, stood up and made her way to the center of the courtroom.
She straightened her back, adjusted her glasses, and took a breath before delivering the closing statement.
"Your Honor, esteemed members of the jury," the lawyer began, voice calm and steady. "We have spent weeks unpacking the truth. You've heard witness after witness testify under oath about Mrs. Veronica Fury's direct involvement in heinous acts - attempting to take Nicole Okeke's life, planning an attack that resulted in the loss of an unborn child, and using her influence to silence anyone who dared speak against her."
She looked around at the jury. Some nodded, others leaned forward, visibly affected.
"The evidence is undeniable. You've heard the recorded conversation where Mrs. Fury admitted to hiring someone to harm my client. You've seen the testimonies; people who were coerced, manipulated, even threatened. And perhaps most disturbing of all, you've watched a recorded confession from a paid assassin, stating clearly that he was hired by Veronica Fury to kill Nicole Okeke."
A pause.
"The truth is staring us in the face. And now, the question is simple: will justice be served?"
Silence followed.
Veronica shifted uneasily in her chair, her fingers nervously digging into the courtroom table. Her lawyer sat stiff, face unreadable.
Nicole's lawyer stepped closer to the jury, her voice lowered but firm.
"My client has endured suffering no one should ever know. The scars she carries are not just physical; they run deep. But today, we all have a chance to take a stand. To say that this is not okay. That no one, regardless of name or status, is above the law. Let justice speak today."
With that, she walked back to her seat.
Nicole drew in a slow breath, gripping the table as the judge nodded and spoke.
"This court is in recess until the final verdict is read," the judge announced. "We'll reconvene in thirty minutes."
The gavel came down. Murmurs erupted. Journalists flew into action, typing furiously. Members of the Fury family sat in stunned silence, weighed down by what they had just heard.
Nicole had barely stepped into the hallway with her legal team when she heard that familiar voice behind her.
"Nicole."
Veronica's voice trembled, but the arrogance she once carried had dimmed.
Nicole turned, eyes narrowing.
There stood Veronica - her lawyer behind her, no longer smug or confident. Just tired... and afraid.
"I need to speak with you," Veronica said.
Nicole's lawyer moved to block the path. "Anything you have to say should go through legal-"
"No," Veronica interrupted, shaking her head. "It's between me and Nicole."
Nicole crossed her arms, head tilted. "You have nothing to say that I want to hear."
Veronica stepped forward, a flicker of desperation in her eyes. "Please. I've lost everything. Please don't take what little I have left."
Nicole's chest tightened.
She had imagined this day countless times - Veronica Fury groveling, powerless. And now it was happening. But instead of feeling triumph, all Nicole felt was... empty.
Years of betrayal, the loss, the endless nights of crying, the shattered pieces of herself she had tried to glue back together - it all came rushing back.
Forgive this woman? After all she'd done?
Nicole clenched her fists, her nails pressing hard into her palms. "You're only sorry because you've lost," she said coldly.
Veronica's eyes shifted. Regret? Shame?
"I was wrong," she whispered. "I see that now. But if this case goes through, I'll have nothing. No name, no home, nothing."
Nicole laughed quietly, but there was no humour in it. "Isn't that exactly what you wanted for me?"
Veronica winced. "I know. I'm sorry. But I'm asking you... woman to woman. Haven't I paid enough?"
Nicole's lawyer gently touched her arm. "We don't need this. The case is airtight. She'll answer for everything."
Nicole turned away, looking out the tall courtroom windows. The city stood proud in the distance - full of life and motion. She thought of everything this woman had stolen from her.
And she remembered what Carter once told her: revenge is a fire that keeps burning long after you think it's done.
But this wasn't revenge.
This was justice.
Nicole turned back to Veronica, her voice low but unwavering. "We'll see."
Was she going to really let this go?
Veronica looked stunned, lips parted as if to speak again.
Just then, the courtroom clerk called out, voice loud and clear: "The trial is resuming. All parties are ordered to return to the courtroom."
Nicole's heart pounded as she returned to her seat.
The judge reentered, gavel slamming down.
"Ms. Okeke," he said, looking directly at her. "Your legal team has presented sufficient and compelling evidence against Mrs. Fury. This court is ready to deliver a verdict. Do you have anything to say before the judgment is passed?"
All eyes turned to Nicole.
Her lawyer watched her carefully, waiting.
Nicole stood, smoothing down her jacket. She turned briefly to meet Veronica's eyes, but there was no emotion on her face.
"Yes, Your Honor," she said clearly.
"I have nothing more to add. I trust this court to deliver justice."
Veronica inhaled sharply. The reality of it all settled on her like a stone.
The judge nodded solemnly.
"Very well," he said. "Based on the evidence and testimonies presented, this court finds Veronica Fury guilty on all counts."
Gasps filled the room.
The Judge paused, allowing the weight of his words to settle.
"For her crimes, including attempted murder, conspiracy to cause grievous harm, and obstruction of justice, this court hereby sentences her to fifteen years in a maximum-security prison, without the possibility of parole for the first ten."
Veronica's body went still, her expression frozen in disbelief.
Sarah clutched Taylor's hand tightly. Taylor exhaled slowly, visibly shaken. Sarah dabbed at the tears gathering in her eyes.
Suddenly, Veronica couldn't feel her legs any longer. She collapsed, her breath coming in in gasps.
Taylor and Sarah moved to her, Taylor holding and shaking his mother. "Mum! Mum, wake up!" But Veronica lay unshaken in his arms.
"Somebody call 911!" He screamed.
