Chapter 3
Rebecca's POV.
This being my last year, my first class was in the training room. And of course, I knew Kormac would be there. So, my day was already starting on a bad note.
" Why can't you just be nice to him?" Asked Izzy. " He is our mate after all. Don't you want a mate? If we reject him, we may never have a mate again." Izzy said with a low growl. She was getting frustrated knowing her mate would be there and that her human didn't want him.
" Izzy you know why. He's cruel. If he can treat others like that, what makes you think he won't treat us like that?"
Of course, Izzy knew she had a point, but it was hard all the same. Why did he have to be such a monster? Why would the goddess make them if he was such a monster? It just wasn't fair.
As soon as I walked into the training session, I saw the maze had been put up. So now I knew today's class would be about stealth and catching your prey. Everyone was smiling because this was the favorite of all training. It didn't matter if you were in human form or in wolf form as long as your team won.
I decided to stay in human form so that Izzy couldn't try to mate with Kormac. I knew if she had control, it would happen. Just as class was about to start, I saw Kormac walk in with a smile on his face. I wondered who he had just gotten done torturing. Hopefully it wasn't little Ben, he had finally just healed from the last time.
" Okay, class, everybody pick your teams. We start in ten minutes." Mr Murphy said.
Jake Murphy, the training teacher, had golden hair with blue eyes and was so dreamy. He still hadn’t found his mate, so all the girls were hopeful. Not only was he handsome, but he was also the leader of the guard. Any girl would be lucky to have him as their mate. He was kind, strong, smart, and he would be a great protector for his mate and family.
The two teams had been made. Thank God Kormac was on the other team. My team had Gina, Liz, Bryon, Josie, Mike, James, and Evan.
The other teams' members included Nancy, Zola, Paul, Daniel, Silva, Mariah, Garrett and of course Kormac. Ugh. He was staring at me with a smile on his face. Why? He must know I don’t like him, let alone love him, and would never mate with him.
So, the rules of the game: One person from each side goes into the maze. Each round is ten minutes long. Mr Murphy indicates who will be the Hunter and who will be the prey. So, a kill constitutes being able to find your prey and sneak up on them. Then an evade constitutes, well, not getting killed within the time limit.
Our training session was almost done. Everyone had their two chances at the maze. My two were the last and would determine the winner.
" At least I don't have to go up against Kormac." I told myself.
I was, however, going up against Garrett. Garrett was good looking with dark brown hair and green eyes. I'm going to enjoy sneaking up on him, this made me giggle to myself.
First, I need to evade. That’s not as easy as it sounds. The maze has twists and turns all over, so it's hard to watch your front and back at the same time. I found a spot in a corner and crouched down to listen for footsteps. I could hear Garrett, but he was nowhere near me. His footsteps were getting closer with every minute that passed. I didn't dare move or I might give away my location. So here I was, just sitting and waiting while trying to hold my breath. Just as I heard his footsteps upon me, Mr Murphy called time. I poke around the corner just in time to scare Gavin.
Now it's my turn to hunt. I sat at the entrance of the maze, just listening for any clues to where Gavin might be. There is chatter behind me so it's hard to concentrate. I went into the maze walking quietly when I picked up the sound of Gavin breathing. He was in the far-left corner of the maze.
It didn't take long for me to get there. Still walking as quietly as possible, he was just on the other side of the wall from me. His heart racing and his breaths heavy and shallow. Instead of going around the corner to catch him, I just jumped over the wall. The look on Garrett’s face was priceless when he realized he had been caught.
Since it was an easier training session today, there was no need to take a shower which made me a little happy. All I have to do now is grab my stuff and get out of there before Kormac tries to walk up on me.
My next class is Ancient Studies. Liz and Jared are in there with me. Jared decided to stay the extra two years while taking some online classes. He wanted to take over as pack lawyer when his dad retired. He thought by taking all these extra courses, he could get an insight into how pack business was done. He wanted to do more than just run the pack corporation and deal with land development. Even as a human, he could still hold negotiations with other packs and create treaties.
Luckily, we didn’t have that pop quiz today. I think Josie was trying to freak me out on purpose. That way I could feel a little relief today when it didn’t happen. I did feel a bit relieved, forgetting about being Kormac’s mate for even just a little. It helped relax me a lot, kind of.
I was thankful we had an early lunch. After our third class, we all headed into town to the Burger Shack. Thankfully we made it out of there before Kormac could find and follow us. The last thing I needed was to find out he was going to start stalking me now. I don’t think I could handle that right now. I already felt him staring at me all through class.
