Chapter 73
Serena couldn't shake the feeling of unease that had settled in the pit of her stomach ever since Victoria had mentioned Anna's troubles at work. She had always been a protective friend, especially when it came to Victoria, and hearing that Anna, her best friend's sister, was involved in some sort of trouble only heightened her suspicions.
As she sat across from Victoria at their favorite café, sipping her latte and trying to appear calm and collected, Serena couldn't help but replay the conversation in her mind. Victoria had assured her that everything was resolved and that Anna was fine, but Serena couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to the story than Victoria was letting on.
"Why do you always have to be so suspicious, Serena?" Victoria asked, snapping Serena out of her thoughts.
"I don't know, maybe because I care about you and I don't want to see you get hurt," Serena replied, her voice tinged with frustration. "I just can't help but wonder why Anna is causing trouble at work and what it means for you."
Victoria sighed, reaching across the table to grasp Serena's hand. "I appreciate your concern, I really do. But I know Anna; she wouldn't do anything to intentionally hurt me. And besides, it's all sorted now. She was being framed all along. Let's just move on from this and enjoy our time together, okay?"
Serena nodded reluctantly, knowing that she couldn't push the issue any further without risking her friendship with both Victoria and Anna. She tried to push aside her doubts and enjoy the rest of their afternoon together, but the feeling of unease lingered in the back of her mind.
As the days passed, Serena couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. She knew she had to trust Victoria's judgment, but she still couldn't shake the feeling that there was something more going on beneath the surface.
Serena sat at home, her mind racing with worry. Her best friend Victoria had become increasingly close with Anna, and though she was not jealous of their closeness, she couldn’t shake the feeling that something wasn’t quite right. Anna was too perfect, too good to be true. And she had taken far too long to introduce herself to Victoria.
As the days went by, Serena began to investigate Anna in secret. She followed her around town, watching for any signs of suspicious behavior. She scrolled through her social media profiles, looking for any inconsistencies in her story. But try as she might, Serena couldn’t find anything incriminating.
One day, Serena decided to confront Anna directly. She invited her over for coffee, hoping to catch her off guard and glean some information. As they sat at the kitchen table, Serena carefully broached the subject.
“Anna, I couldn’t help but notice that you and Victoria don’t really look alike,” Serena said casually.
Anna shifted uncomfortably in her seat, but a smile remained plastered on her face. “Oh, well, we don’t share the same mother. It’s not uncommon for siblings to look different.”
Serena nodded, but her suspicions only grew. There was something off about Anna, something she couldn’t quite put her finger on.
As the days turned into weeks, Serena continued her investigation. She talked to Anna’s friends and colleagues, trying to dig up any dirt on her. But no one had a bad word to say about her. In fact, everyone seemed to adore Anna. It was as if she had cast a spell over the entire town.
Frustrated and at her wit’s end, Serena decided to take matters into her own hands. She broke into Anna’s room one day when she was visiting Victoria and Anna was at work, searching for any clues that would reveal her true intentions. But as she frantically rummaged through drawers and cabinets, all she found were perfectly organized belongings and spotless surfaces.
As Serena neared the end of her search, she began to doubt herself. Maybe she had been wrong about Anna all along. Maybe her suspicions were just a result of her own paranoia. With a heavy heart, she began to put everything back where she found it. Just as she was about to leave the room, she heard a voice behind her.
“Serena, what are you doing in Anna’s room?” Victoria stood in the doorway, her eyes narrowed in suspicion.
Caught red-handed, Serena felt a wave of shame wash over her. She knew she had no right to invade Anna’s privacy like this, but curiosity had gotten the better of her.
Victoria’s eyes widened in surprise as she took in the sight of Serena rifling through Anna’s dresser drawers. “Serena, what are you doing?” she whispered, her voice filled with disbelief.
“I-I was just looking for...something,” Serena stammered, her mind racing for an excuse.
Serena’s heart pounded in her chest as she tried to come up with an excuse. “I-I was just looking for a hair tie. I couldn’t find mine in my purse,” she stammered, her cheeks flushed with embarrassment.
Victoria raised an eyebrow, clearly not buying Serena’s feeble excuse. “You expect me to believe that you couldn’t find a hair tie in your own purse, so you decided to search through Anna’s things instead?”
Serena felt a lump form in her throat as she realized how foolish she must look in Victoria’s eyes. She had always prided herself on being a good friend, someone who respected boundaries and never overstepped. But here she was, caught red-handed doing the exact opposite.
Before Serena could say anything else, Victoria shook her head in disappointment. “I can’t believe you would do something like this, Serena. I thought I knew you better than that,” she said, her voice tinged with disappointment.
Victoria’s expression softened slightly, but there was still a hint of anger in her eyes. “You need to stop this, Serena. You need to let go of your suspicions about Anna. She’s my sister, whether you like it or not.”
Serena felt a surge of frustration at her friend’s words. How could she just expect Serena to forget about everything she had seen and felt? How could she ask her to trust someone she knew deep down she couldn’t?
Serena felt a pang of guilt as she watched Victoria turn and walk out of the room, leaving her alone with her thoughts. She knew she had messed up, and she couldn’t shake the feeling that she had just jeopardized her friendship with Victoria. She didn’t want to lose her best friend over such small things.
That evening, Serena sat down with Ethan and confessed everything that had happened with Anna and Victoria. She told him about her suspicions towards Anna, about how she had let her curiosity get the best of her and invade Anna’s privacy. To her surprise, Ethan didn’t react with anger or disappointment. Instead, he simply laughed and pulled Serena into a hug.
“You’re adorable, you know that?” he said, his eyes twinkling with amusement. “I think you were just feeling a little jealous of the attention Victoria has been giving Anna. It’s understandable, Serena. You’re only human.”
Serena felt a weight lift off her shoulders as she gazed into Ethan’s kind eyes. In that moment, she realized just how lucky she was to have him by her side, supporting her through her moments of weakness and insecurity.
As Serena drifted off to sleep that night, she made a promise to herself to never let her jealousy get the best of her again. She vowed to respect boundaries, to trust in the strength of her friendships, and to always be honest and open with those she cared about. And as she snuggled closer to Ethan, she knew that with his love and support, she could conquer anything that came her way.
