Chapter 187: The Architect's Identity
DAMON’S POV
I ordered immediate lockdown immediately after the meeting. Every entrance to the palace was sealed. Every guard doubled. And every Phantom with detection abilities stationed at critical points throughout the compound.
Marcus mobilized our intelligence networks, every informant, every spy, every contact across the continent got the same directive; find any information about someone calling themselves "the Architect."
Nothing came back.
"Whoever this is, they're a ghost," Marcus reported twelve hours later. "No communications intercepts, no financial transactions, no movement patterns. They don't exist in any database."
"They exist enough to deliver a message directly to Ivy's desk," I said.
Marcus pulled up security footage from the palace corridors outside Ivy's office.
Nothing unusual. Guards at their posts, regular patrols, no unauthorized access.
"The message appeared between two guard rotations," Marcus explained. "We have footage showing the desk empty at 2:47 AM. At 2:53 AM, the message is there. Six-minute window."
"And no one entered the office during those six minutes?"
"Not according to any sensors, cameras, or guard reports," Marcus confirmed.
“Perfect concealment,” my wolf said. “Like Kira. Or even better.”
"Whoever delivered this has Phantom abilities we haven't encountered before," Marcus concluded.
He wasn't wrong.
Someone had walked through our highest-security facility, past trained warriors and detection wards, to leave a threatening message on the Phantom Queen's desk.
That took either incredible skill or supernatural abilities.
Probably both.
I called an emergency meeting with Dr. Cross to review everything we knew about Project Nightshade.
"Someone claims they're completing the program," I said. "Which means they have expertise in Phantom genetic modification. Who would have that knowledge?"
Dr. Cross pulled up old personnel files.
"Project Nightshade had a core team of five scientists," she explained. "I was the medical director. But there were others with specialized knowledge."
She showed me three names.
"Dr. Adrian Voss was the lead geneticist. He designed the enhancement protocols, developed the modification techniques. Brilliant but ruthless."
"Where is he now?"
"Officially dead. Lab fire twelve years ago. Body was never recovered."
“Convenient,” my wolf muttered.
"Dr. Sarah Hait was the biochemist," Dr. Cross continued. "She worked on the cellular integration, making sure the modifications wouldn't kill subjects immediately. Whereabouts unknown, she disappeared right before the program shut down."
"And the third?"
"Director Thomas Reid. Program overseer, Council liaison, the one who selected which children would become subjects. Presumed dead, killed during the Purge, supposedly."
Three possibilities. All officially dead or missing.
All potentially still alive and continuing their work.
"I need everything you have on these three," I ordered. "Photos, backgrounds, known associates, last confirmed locations."
"I'll compile it immediately," Dr. Cross said.
She paused.
"Damon... if one of them is the Architect, if they actually figured out how to combine multiple enhancements successfully..."
She didn't finish. Didn't need to.
A Phantom with Luna's power, Maya's nullification, and Lucas's enhanced suppression would be unstoppable.
And if the Architect had Kira's perfect concealment too?
We'd never see them coming.
Lucas regained consciousness late that afternoon. He was weak, barely able to speak. The medical team had stabilized his condition enough for brief conversations.
I visited his room with Ivy and Maya.
"You're safe now," Maya told him, holding his hand. "We got you out."
Lucas's voice was a rasp. "Thank you."
"We need to ask you about Kira," I said gently. "You mentioned having a lead on her location."
Lucas nodded slowly.
"We stayed in contact after Dr. Cross separated us. We exchanged letters, and coded messages. We were careful."
"When did you last hear from her?" Ivy asked.
"Six months ago. She sent a letter saying someone was watching her and following her guardian's movements. She was scared."
"What happened next?"
"Nothing. She went dark. I sent letters but got no response. I tried to find her but..." He coughed, the effort clearly painful. "I got captured before I could investigate anything."
Six months ago. Right around when the Preservation Alliance started their experimentation program.
“The timeline matches,” my wolf observed. “Someone was hunting Project Nightshade subjects systematically.”
"The coordinates you carved in your cell," I said. "Where do they lead?"
"Last location I knew. It’s a small settlement in northern Canada, near the Alaska border. Kira's guardian was living there with a group of off-grid Phantoms. Hiding from pack society."
"We'll send a team," Ivy promised. "We'll find her."
Lucas's eyes closed. "Be careful. Whoever took me knew exactly where to find me. They had inside information. Someone told them about Project Nightshade survivors."
"Who?" Maya asked.
"I don't know. But they're smart. They knew things only Dr. Cross or the original scientists would know."
Ivy and I shared the same thought. The Architect wasn't just continuing Project Nightshade. They'd been part of it from the beginning.
That night, I was reviewing intelligence reports in my office when Maya appeared at the door.
She looked terrified. Shaking.
"Can I talk to you?" she asked. "Privately?"
"Of course."
She entered, closing the door behind her. Stood there for a moment, gathering courage.
"I need to tell you something I haven't told anyone," she finally said. "Not Dr. Cross, not my mother, not the Queen."
“This is important,” my wolf said.
"Go ahead."
Maya took a breath.
"Project Nightshade didn't just enhance three of us. There was a fourth survivor."
My full attention locked onto her.
"What?"
"Dr. Cross doesn't know because I helped them escape before she found me," Maya explained rapidly. "It was fifteen years ago. I was still very young, but I remember fragments. The fear, the chaos, the termination order."
"Who was the fourth subject?"
"My older brother," Maya said, her voice breaking. "He was Subject Beta. He had perfect concealment abilities even stronger than Kira's. He could hide anything. People, objects, entire rooms."
She pulled a photograph from her pocket with trembling hands.
A teenage boy stared back at me. Sharp features, silver eyes, calculating expression.
"His name was Adrian," Maya said. "Dr. Cross called him Adam in the records because she didn't know his real identity. He was seventeen when the project shut down."
"What happened to him?"
"When Dr. Cross came to rescue us, Adam told me to hide. Said he'd draw the enforcers' attention away, buy me time to escape with her. I hid like he said. I heard fighting, screaming. Then nothing."
Tears streamed down her face.
"I thought he died protecting me. But now I'm not sure. What if he survived? What if he's been out there all these years?"
“Subject Beta,” my wolf said slowly. “Perfect concealment. Seventeen years old then. Thirty-two now. With fifteen years to perfect his abilities.”
I alerted Ivy immediately.
She arrived within minutes, Marcus and Dr. Cross with her.
"There was a fourth subject," I told them. "Subject Beta. Adrian, Maya's older brother."
Dr. Cross went pale.
"That's impossible. I only found three survivors. Maya, Lucas, and Kira."
"Because Adam helped Maya escape before you found her," I explained. "He drew attention away, disappeared in the chaos."
"Subject Beta had perfect concealment," Dr. Cross said slowly. "Even I couldn't track him effectively. I assumed he died during the termination order, but if he survived..."
"He could have been watching us this entire time," Ivy finished. "Completely undetectable."
Someone with perfect concealment abilities could walk through any facility unnoticed. Could deliver messages past any security. Could study our defenses, our people, our children without ever being detected.
"If someone's continuing Project Nightshade," Maya said quietly, "if they have Kira, if they're trying to combine abilities, they might have found Adrian too."
I looked at the photograph again.
"Or," I said slowly, "Adrian is the Architect. He survived, learned to master his abilities, and decided to finish what Project Nightshade started."
The room fell silent.
"My brother wouldn't do that," Maya said, but her voice lacked conviction.
"You were a baby when you last saw him," Dr. Cross said gently. "That’s fifteen years of survival, isolation, possibly trauma. People change."
"We need to find him," Ivy said. "Whether he's a victim or the threat, we need to know which."
Marcus pulled up databases, running searches on anyone named Adrian connected to genetic research or Phantom activities.
Nothing.
“If he has perfect concealment,” my wolf said, “he could be using any name. Any identity. Could be anyone.”
"Pull personnel records from the Project Nightshade files," I ordered. "Find Subject Beta's original profile. Real name, physical description, abilities assessment. Everything."
Dr. Cross started searching.
Through the mindlink, Ivy shared her fear with me. We'd been looking for three Project Nightshade subjects. There were four. And the fourth had abilities that made him essentially invisible to everyone. He could be anywhere planning anything. And we'd never know until he wanted us to.
