Chapter 186: The Rescue
IVY’S POV
We hit the facility at three in the morning.
The Preservation Alliance compound sat in rural Washington, disguised as a veterinary research center. From the outside, it looked legitimate. There was a professional signage, proper permits, and regular business hours.
But inside was something else entirely.
Marcus led the breach team through the eastern entrance while Lena's squad secured the perimeter. Morrigan and I went in through the roof, using Phantom abilities to slip past sensors.
Maya insisted on coming despite everyone's protests.
"He's my brother," she'd said. "Not by blood, but we survived Project Nightshade together. I'm not leaving him there."
Elena tried to stop her. Dr. Cross argued it was too dangerous. But Maya was fifteen, determined, and had nullification abilities that could neutralize enemy Phantoms.
So we brought her.
The facility's interior made my stomach turn.
Examination rooms with restraints bolted to tables. Genetic sequencing equipment still running active tests. Refrigerated storage containing vials of blood labeled with subject numbers.
“They really are recreating Project Nightshade and continuing the experiments.” my wolf snarled.
We found the cells in the basement level.
Eight Phantoms were imprisoned behind silver-reinforced doors. Most were teenagers or young adults, all showing signs of extended captivity.
Lucas was in the last cell.
Fourteen years old. Emaciated and covered in needle marks from countless injections and extractions. His eyes were hollow, barely focusing on us when we opened the door.
Maya screamed when she saw him.
She ran forward, dropping to her knees beside him. "Lucas. Lucas, it's me. It's Maya. We're getting you out."
Lucas tried to speak but couldn't form words.
"He's severely malnourished," Dr. Cross said, examining him quickly. "Dehydrated, possibly septic. We need to move him now."
Marcus and Lena coordinated the extraction of all eight prisoners while Morrigan and I covered them.
Alliance guards finally realized we'd breached. Their alarms blared and they converged on our position, armed to the teeth.
The fighting was brief but brutal. They weren't soldiers, they were researchers and security personnel, so they weren’t exactly trained for combat against Phantom warriors. We cut through them quickly and extracted all prisoners within twenty minutes.
The facility burned behind us as we evacuated. Marcus had placed charges throughout the complex, destroying evidence, erasing their research, making sure they couldn't rebuild here.
On the flight back to Crescent City, Dr. Cross worked frantically to stabilize Lucas. He kept slipping in and out of consciousness, his breathing shallow. Maya held his hand, tears streaming down her face.
"Is he going to die?" she asked quietly.
Dr. Cross's expression was grim.
"They accelerated the degradation," she said. "Whatever experiments they ran pushed his body past its limits. His cellular breakdown is much further advanced than Maya's."
"How long does he have?" I asked.
"Months. Maybe weeks. I can't be certain until we get him into full medical care."
Through my connection with Damon back at Crescent City, I shared the devastating news.
“Another child dying from Project Nightshade,” he sent back, his rage and grief mixing together.
Lucas's eyes fluttered open. He looked at Maya, recognition dawning.
"Maya?" His voice was barely a whisper.
"I'm here," Maya said. "We got you out."
"Kira..." Lucas managed. "They're looking... for her too..."
"Where is she?" I asked gently.
"Have... a lead... northern Canada..." His breath rattled. "Coordinates... in my... cell..."
He passed out before saying more.
Marcus immediately dispatched a team back to the burning facility to search Lucas's cell for any information about Kira's location.
If the Alliance had leads on her, we needed to find her first.
We arrived at Crescent City as dawn broke. Lucas was rushed into intensive care immediately. The medical team swarmed him, trying to stabilize his failing systems. The other seven rescued Phantoms were treated in separate rooms, all suffering various degrees of experimentation trauma.
I stayed to help coordinate their care while Damon organized debriefings. Each rescued Phantom had a story. And each one was horrifying.
"They took me three months ago," one woman said. She was maybe twenty, with burns on her arms from repeated injections. "Said they were studying Phantom genetics to develop better treatments."
"What were they actually doing?" Damon asked.
"Trying to reproduce the enhancement process," she explained. "Something about some research project creating three subjects with enhanced abilities. The Alliance wanted to figure out how, so they could create more."
Another survivor confirmed it. "They kept asking about our bloodlines, our abilities, how strong we were naturally. I think they were looking for patterns, trying to identify which genetic factors allowed enhancement without immediate death."
“It’s just like the original project. my wolf said darkly. “They want controllable weapons.”
"They talked about building an army," a third survivor added. "Creating dozens of enhanced Phantoms loyal to the Alliance. Soldiers who could match your children’s powers."
Damon heard everything through the mindlink. The Preservation Alliance wasn't rebuilding with traditional military strength. They were rebuilding with science, trying to create an enhanced Phantom army to oppose us.
"Even if we destroyed this facility, they'll build another," I said to Damon as we met privately after the debriefings. "They'll keep hunting Phantoms, and keep experimenting, until they create what they want."
"Then we find every facility," Damon said grimly. "Burn them all down. Hunt every Alliance member until none remain."
But we both knew that wasn't realistic.
The Alliance operated in shadows. Small cells, scattered operations, careful recruitment. We couldn't eliminate them all before they hurt more people.
That night, exhausted and emotionally drained, I checked on Maya and Elena. They'd fallen asleep together in Elena's quarters. Maya curled against her mother, both of them finally healing the fifteen-year gap between them.
Dr. Cross had given Maya sedatives to help her sleep after the trauma of seeing Lucas's condition. She needed rest. They both did. I returned to my office to file reports about the raid. Then I found a message waiting on my desk.
Simple paper, no envelope.
“How did this get past security?” my wolf demanded.
I opened it with trembling hands.
“You found Lucas. Good. But you're too late for Kira. I have her. And unlike the Preservation Alliance, I actually know how to finish what Project Nightshade started.
Your children's power, Maya's nullification, Lucas's suppression, imagine all of it in one Phantom. That's what I'm building.
Watch your borders, Phantom Queen. I'm coming.”
—The Architect
My blood ran cold.
Someone had Kira. Someone who could bypass all our security to deliver messages directly to my desk. And he’s claiming to know how to complete Project Nightshade successfully.
I shared the message with Damon immediately through the mindlink.
He was in the room within seconds, Marcus and Lena behind him.
"How did this get here?" Damon demanded, examining the paper.
"No idea," Marcus said. "I'll review security footage, but if someone has concealment abilities like Kira…"
"They could walk right past guards without being detected," I finished.
Morrigan entered, drawn by the commotion. She examined the message and her expression darkened.
"This is Phantom work," she said. "Whoever this Architect is, they're one of us."
"A Phantom working with the Preservation Alliance?" Lena asked.
"Or working independently," Morrigan said. "Probably has their own agenda and sees Project Nightshade as useful."
"They claim to have Kira," I said. "And claim they're building something, combining multiple enhanced abilities into one Phantom."
"That's impossible," Dr. Cross said, arriving as word spread through the palace. "The genetic modifications for different abilities are incompatible. You can't stack them without killing the subject immediately."
"Unless someone figured out how to make them compatible," Damon said grimly.
Fuck. If the Architect could successfully combine enhanced abilities, they'd create a Phantom more powerful than anything that existed.
More powerful than Luna. More powerful than any of us.
That’s an ultimate weapon.
"We need to find them," I said. "Before they finish whatever they're building."
"I'll mobilize intelligence networks,” Marcus said. “We’ll increase border security, trace every lead on Kira's location…"
"Lucas had coordinates," I interrupted. "Did your team recover anything from his cell?"
Marcus pulled out his comm device. "I'll check now."
While he contacted the search team, I looked at the message again.
“Watch your borders.”
Kind of like a threat and a promise. The Architect was coming. And they were confident enough to announce it.
"We need to warn the other packs," Damon said. "If the Architect is hunting enhanced Phantoms, any territory with Phantom populations is at risk."
"We also need to protect Luna and Emmett," I added. "If the Architect wants their power…"
"They'll have to go through all of us to get it," Damon finished. His protective rage flaring hot.
Marcus's device beeped. "The search team found something. Lucas carved the coordinates into his cell wall. It’s Northern Canada, near the Alaska border."
"That's where Kira's guardian was last located," Dr. Cross said. "Five years ago."
"Then we go there," I said. "Find Kira before the Architect does."
"The Architect claims they already have her," Lena pointed out.
"They're lying," I said firmly. "Or they would have included proof. This message is designed to make us panic, make mistakes."
Damon agreed. But I could feel his worry, I might be wrong. Kira might already be in enemy hands, being experimented on.
And if that was true, we were running out of time to stop that sick bastard calling himself the architect.
