Chapter 299: The Price of Darkness

The room was shrouded in semi-darkness. The windows remained closed, thick curtains blocking any trace of sunlight. The air was dense, heavy with an invisible energy that moved like smoke, swirling around Ryan like a silent serpent.

Lyra entered without knocking, her heart still pounding from the conversation she had with Amara and Angela hours earlier. She needed to talk to Ryan before it was too late.

What she found, however, made her blood run cold.

Ryan stood in the center of the room, enveloped by a dark aura that pulsed like a living entity. His eyes, once marked by pain, now shone with something more intense: conviction. Shadows around his body bowed at his feet like obedient subjects.

— Ryan... — Lyra whispered, taking a hesitant step. — What are you doing?

He turned slowly. His face was still the same, but something was different—an intensity in his gaze, a lack of hesitation. He seemed more… dangerous.

— I am making the only decision that can still save us — he said, his voice carrying a subtle echo, almost as if another entity was speaking alongside him.

Lyra frowned.

— Save? That sounds anything but salvation.

Ryan approached slowly.

— Sergio is always one step ahead. He manipulates, divides, controls. There’s only one way to beat him: using the same force he fears. Darkness.

— That darkness is consuming you! — she protested, taking a step back. — You're starting to speak like him!

— No — Ryan lifted his hand, and the shadows around him stirred like black flames. — Sergio underestimates what's inside me. But I am not like him, Lyra. I am the dragon. And the dragon... does not bow.

— But the dragon also destroys! — Lyra shouted, her chest rising and falling with anger and fear. — Ryan, the power you're using... it's not just strength. It's corruption. That darkness is an ancient enemy of Valthorya. It was sealed for a reason!

— And I will free it for an even greater reason.

A heavy silence fell between them. Lyra stood frozen, words caught in her throat.

— Are you saying... that you choose this? — she asked at last. — You choose that shadow... instead of me?

Ryan hesitated.

Then, with his eyes fixed on hers, he replied:

— I choose to win.

Those words cut Lyra like a blade. She shivered. Anger and fear intertwined, but worse was the sense of disappointment.

— That’s not how we win, Ryan. Not like that. Sergio wants that. He wants you to embrace the dark side because he knows that, in the end, you will become what he is.

— You don’t understand! — Ryan’s voice exploded, echoing through the walls. Shadows around him violently stirred, as if reacting to his outburst. — I saw what he did! I felt what he destroyed! He killed... he manipulated my mind... he wants to destroy everything! And if I have to lose myself to stop him... then so be it!

Lyra approached, tears in her eyes.

— Ryan, listen! You’re saying you’ll lose yourself on purpose? That you’ll sacrifice yourself as if there’s no other way? You don’t have to do this alone. I’m here. Angela, Amara... we’re all with you.

Ryan closed his eyes for a moment. And for a brief second, the shadows paused. He took a deep breath.

— But you don’t know what it’s like... to be weak. — His voice was now soft, broken. — You don’t know what it’s like to have the world expect something from you... while you only feel emptiness.

Lyra touched his face.

— Ryan... I know what fear is. I know what it’s like to feel like you’re not enough. But the answer is not in darkness. It’s in who you are. In who you choose to be, even when everything is against you.

Ryan looked at her, eyes teary. But anger still burned beneath the surface.

— So what do you want me to do? Fight with flowers while Sergio destroys us?

— No. I want you to fight with courage. With clarity. With truth. — She touched his chest. — I want you to fight with this. Because if you lose this... you haven’t truly won. You’ve only become another weapon for him.

For a moment, silence returned. Shadows seemed hesitant, as if doubting their own dominion.

But then, a new presence invaded the room.

A hologram flickered in the corner, and Sérgio’s image materialized. He had been watching silently.

— Tsk... so predictable. — Sérgio’s voice sounded with scorn. — The girl trying to save the corrupted prince. Like in the old stories.

Lyra turned, eyes blazing with hatred.

— You’re not welcome here.

— Oh, but this is where it all begins, my dear — he replied, smiling. — Are you really ready to face it? Because that’s the next step, isn’t it? Ryan against you. Shadow against light. Love against instinct.

Ryan took a step toward the projection.

— You won’t win her.

— Won’t I? — Sérgio tilted his head. — Then why is she afraid of you?

Ryan stopped. He looked at Lyra. Her gaze... was sincere. There was love, yes, but also fear.

And that... hurt.

Sérgio laughed.

— The truth, Ryan, is that you’ve always had this monster inside you. I just showed you the mirror.

— Shut up. — Ryan raised his hand, shadows swirling fiercely. The holographic image trembled, distorted, but did not dispel.

Sérgio smiled.

— Too late. The war has already begun. Within you.

The image faded away.

And the room fell into the deepest silence.

Lyra looked at Ryan. He was trembling. With rage. With fear. With exhaustion.

— I need to be alone — he murmured finally.

She wanted to protest, but something in his tone held her back.

She simply nodded.

— I’ll be here... when you’re ready to come back.

She slowly left, her heart shattered. Behind her, shadows recoiled like wounded beasts.

Ryan fell to his knees.

And for the first time... he cried.
