Chapter 298: Hearts at War
The room had become too small to hold so many intense emotions. Ryan remained standing, motionless, with the shadow of the dragon still pulsating in his veins, like a beast asleep, ready to awaken again. Angela and Amara exchanged silent glances — they knew the situation was far more serious than they had anticipated.
Lyra did not let go of Ryan’s hand. She could feel him, feel the power vibrating beneath his skin, the anger still latent, the fear masked by determination. And above all, she felt how hard he was fighting not to give in.
— Ryan, look at me — she asked softly, as one would speak to a wounded animal.
He opened his eyes slowly. There was still a dark gleam in them, but upon seeing Lyra’s face, the shadow seemed to waver, as if hesitating.
— You’re not alone — she continued. — I am here. We are here.
Angela stepped closer, calmer now, her maternal gaze full of supplication.
— Don’t let him take what you are, my son. You are more than fury. You are more than the blood of the dragon.
Amara crossed her arms, her expression grave.
— But we cannot ignore that Sérgio’s threat is real. He knows more than he reveals. And now that Ryan is unstable, he will try to take advantage of that.
Ryan stepped away from everyone, walking to the window. The cold night wind blew against his face, bringing a bit of clarity. Outside, the horizon was cloaked in fog, as if the very world was on the brink of the unknown.
— I don’t know if I can win — he admitted softly. — If I have to fight myself at the same time.
— You don’t have to do this alone — said Lyra firmly.
He turned to face her. There was such conflict in his eyes that it broke her heart.
— What if I lose control? — he asked, almost desperate. — What if… I hurt you?
— Then I will be here to remind you of who you are — Lyra replied without hesitation. — Just as you have saved me before.
Angela looked at Amara and made a discreet signal. It was time to act, to move before Sérgio gained more advantage.
— We need to reinforce the palace defenses — said Amara pragmatically. — And we need to start training. Ryan, Lyra… you need to learn to control this energy before it destroys you.
— Training? — Lyra repeated, surprised.
Angela nodded.
— There are ancient secrets that are not in the books. Ancient magics that can help you balance light and shadow. But it won’t be easy. It will require sacrifices.
The air grew even heavier with those words. Sacrifices. Lyra felt the weight of responsibility sinking deeper into her chest.
— I am willing — she said without hesitation.
Ryan hesitated only a moment before nodding as well.
— Me too.
Amara smiled bitterly.
— Then get ready. The first lesson begins now.
Night fell deeper, plunging the palace into an almost supernatural shadow. Angela led the small group to a hidden chamber in the underground, behind a secret wall in the east wing. The torches lit magically as they entered, illuminating ancient inscriptions on the walls, symbols that seemed to vibrate under the dim light.
Lyra looked around, marveling and feeling scared.
— What is this place?
— It’s the Sanctuary of Harmony — Angela explained. — One of the few places where Valthorya’s energies are pure and balanced. Here, darkness and light coexist. Here, you can face yourselves.
Ryan looked at the runes-covered walls and felt a strange prick in his chest. As if something there recognized the beast inside him… and called to it.
— What should we do? — Lyra asked, squeezing Ryan’s hand.
Angela made a gesture for them to position themselves in the center of the hall.
— Close your eyes — she instructed. — Breathe deeply. Connect with what you are. Not what you fear to be.
Lyra obeyed. She felt the cold stone beneath her bare feet, the smell of burning incense in some forgotten corner. She also felt Ryan, beside her, like an unstable flame.
Within her, the ancestral energy began to awaken. It was like diving into a deep lake where hot and cold currents met. She felt the light… and also a small seed of shadow, the pain of her losses, her fears.
She accepted both.
Beside her, Ryan trembled. The dragon within him did not want to be calmed. It roared, thrashed, trying to take control. His breath grew heavy, his muscles tense.
Angela began to chant a low song, an ancient melody echoing in the stone walls. The energy in the hall changed, becoming denser, more alive.
Lyra reached out to Ryan with her mind, as if extending a hand into the dark.
“Don’t fight yourself,” she whispered mentally. “Accept what is. Master what you feel. You are the master of your own destiny.”
For a moment, it seemed Ryan would succumb. Shadows almost swallowed him.
But then, like a star emerging in darkness, Lyra’s presence illuminated his inner chaos. He found her hand, squeezed it tightly, and took a deep breath.
The shadows around him wavered.
But they did not disappear.
Ryan opened his eyes, looking at Lyra. There was darkness in them, yes. But also love. And that was his anchor.
— I’m here — he whispered, hoarse.
Lyra smiled, relieved.
— And I am with you.
Amara watched the scene critically.
— It’s not enough to resist — she said, breaking the moment. — You need to learn to use this force without losing yourself in it.
Angela nodded.
— And for that, you need to know the true enemy.
Ryan furrowed his brow.
— Sérgio?
— Not just Sérgio — corrected Angela. — He’s just a piece. There is something much older, much darker, moving the pieces on the board.
Lyra felt a shiver run down her spine.
— So we need to be even stronger — she said. — Stronger than ever before.
Amara crossed her arms.
— And faster. Sérgio won’t wait for you to be ready.
Angela approached the young people.
— Tomorrow, we will begin real training. Today, you took the first step. But remember: every choice from now on will shape not only your destinies… but the future of all Valthorya.
Ryan squeezed Lyra’s hand more firmly.
— We are in this together — he said with renewed certainty.
Lyra smiled, although she knew the road ahead would be tough, perhaps cruel. But as long as they were together, there was hope.
There was always hope.
As the group left the sanctuary, a shadow watched from afar, hidden among the columns. It was not Sérgio, but something even older. An echo of forgotten eras, awakened by the imbalance of forces.
It smiled, a cold, lifeless smile.
The game had truly begun.
And soon, neither Lyra’s light nor Ryan’s strength would be enough to stop what was coming.
