Chapter 387

It seemed like Emily had been staring at her for a while, so Brynn finally looked up and met her gaze.

Tonight, Brynn had been taken aback by Emily's beauty more than once. She couldn't believe someone could be so stunning, flawless from every angle.

She'd heard people say Emily was pretty, but she hadn't really believed it. After all, even celebrities claim to be the most beautiful.

But now, Brynn realized she had been completely wrong.

Emily was a thousand times more beautiful than any celebrity.

If she became a star, she might even become a rising superstar.

Unable to hold back, she said, "Mrs. Carter, you are truly stunning."

Caught off guard by the compliment, Emily smiled lightly and nodded, "Beautiful women do know how to give compliments."

Brynn's face turned red instantly, and she waved her hands, "Mrs. Carter, don't say that. No one has ever called me beautiful, at most they say I have a certain charm."

Hearing this, Emily's eyes flashed, and she smirked slightly, almost smiling.

"Yes, sometimes charm is more important than looks. Brynn, you do have a certain charm."

Brynn lowered her head, her face flushed.

Raymond, who was driving, didn't join their conversation. He just focused on driving, and halfway through, he changed lanes and turned onto another road.

Brynn noticed this wasn't the way to Serenity Estates and asked curiously, "Mr. Carter, did you take a wrong turn? This isn't the way to Serenity Estates."

Raymond glanced at Brynn through the rearview mirror, his tone indifferent, "Just do your job and don't ask unnecessary questions."

Brynn's face changed, and she clasped her hands nervously, looking embarrassed.

Emily leaned back in her seat, saying nothing.

A few seconds later, Raymond spoke again, "Emily, I remember you like Mexican food. I'll pick some up, and we can eat together."

Emily's eyes lit up at the mention of food, "Really? I've been craving it for days, but it's too far, and you've been busy. I didn't want to bother you."

Raymond chuckled lightly, "From now on, if you want something, just call me. No matter how busy I am, I'll make time for you."

Brynn felt a pang of discomfort, her arms trembling slightly.

She opened her mouth, stunned for a moment, then looked at Raymond's back with mixed emotions.

Emily noticed this but said nothing.

When they arrived to get the food, Emily initially wanted to go with Raymond, but he asked her to stay in the car.

Almost without thinking, Brynn opened the car door and jumped out.

"Mr. Carter, let me go with you. I can help carry things," Brynn offered, trying to be helpful.

Raymond's eyes flashed with surprise, then he said bluntly, "Your job is to take care of Emily. You don't need to worry about anything else. If you insist, Brynn, you can leave now."

Brynn's face turned red with embarrassment. She cleared her throat, "I'm sorry, Mr. Carter. I overstepped."

"You've overstepped more than once tonight. I hope you learn from this and don't do it again," Raymond replied.

Though they were a bit away from the car, Emily could still hear their conversation.

It seemed she had encountered a naive young girl.

Brynn returned to the car, avoiding Emily's gaze, her hands restless. She wished there was a way to hide her embarrassment, but there wasn't.

So Emily broke the silence, "How did you start working at the Carter Group?"

Brynn's body stiffened, then she looked up, "I don't really fit in at the Carter Group... I'm always so clumsy..."

"Clumsy, yes, but understandable. Most fresh graduates are like that," Emily didn't deny Brynn's self-assessment but didn't belittle her either.

Brynn lowered her head in disappointment, "Mrs. Carter, I envy you. You're educated and beautiful, truly a winner in life."

A winner in life?

Emily almost laughed at the term. Since marrying Raymond, many people online had called her a winner in life.

Emily smiled, her eyes soft and lazy. She reclined her seat a bit, half-leaning back.

"There's nothing to envy. Everyone's life is unique, with different backgrounds and experiences. There's no need for envy. Just live your own life well, and that's enough."

Brynn felt a mix of admiration and jealousy. Why was there such a big difference between her and Emily?

To Brynn, Emily exuded elegance and a noble aura, even without makeup, she was stunning.

Looking at herself, even with makeup and a decent figure, she felt plain and unremarkable.

Brynn bit her lip, "Mrs. Carter, you're right. No wonder Mr. Carter likes you so much."

Likes...

Emily didn't know the answer herself, but as Raymond's wife, she had to uphold their marriage.

So she lied with a straight face, "Yes, he pursued me relentlessly, spending money and being persistent. I thought it would be a shame to miss out on someone so good, so I agreed."

Brynn was stunned, staring at Emily, her eyes vacant like a puppet with broken strings.

She didn't snap out of it until Emily called her softly.

"What's wrong, Brynn? What were you thinking?" Emily asked with concern, her eyes fixed on Brynn, as if trying to see through her.

Brynn quickly looked away, trying to hide her earlier lapse.
