Chapter 154 The Void Lord's Appearance

Chapter 154 The Void Lord's Appearance
Lyra: POV

I raised the Tidesong Staff high above my head, feeling the starlight energy within me surge and connect with the crystal at its tip. The remaining undead soldiers shambled toward us, their void-corrupted bodies emanating that sickening purple mist.

"Stay back, Kael!" I shouted, suddenly certain of what needed to be done.

The staff's crystal erupted with blinding silver-blue light, pulsating outward in waves that filled the cavern. When the radiance touched the first undead soldier, it froze mid-step. A high-pitched screech—like nothing I'd ever heard before—filled the cave as purple energy began to be extracted from its body, pulled away like poison from a wound.

I watched, transfixed, as the creature's corrupted form crumbled into a pile of white bones, all traces of void energy completely dissipated. The remaining undead abominations turned toward me in unison, their hollow eye sockets fixed on my glowing staff.

"Star Goddess..." I whispered, genuinely shocked by what the Tidesong Staff could do.

The staff grew warmer in my hands, almost responding to my thoughts. I stepped forward with newfound confidence, sweeping it in a wide arc before me. The silver-blue light expanded in a wave, washing over the remaining soldiers. One by one, they froze, screamed, and collapsed as the void energy was purged from their bodies, leaving nothing but piles of ancient armor and bones.

"This isn't just some family heirloom," I said to Kael, staring at the Tidesong Staff with new reverence. "It's a weapon specifically designed against void energy."

Kael approached, eyes reflecting the staff's glow. "With that kind of power, we might actually have a chance against Valen." His voice dropped. "We can save Aria."

I ran my fingers along the intricate runes carved into the staff's length. They seemed to shift slightly under my touch, ancient symbols rearranging themselves as if responding to my intention.

"But we need to seal this rift first," I said firmly. "That will give us a better chance of rescuing Aria safely."

Kael gripped my hand, his storm energy mingling with my starlight where our skin met. "Agreed. Let's deal with this threat, then head straight to Flamescale territory."

Outside the cave, the forest remained twisted and corrupted. My staff continued emitting a soft protective glow that seemed to push back the surrounding contamination. I decided to test its abilities further.

"Let's see if we can purify some of this forest," I suggested. "Create a safe path for when we head to rescue Aria."

I planted the Staff firmly into the ground, channeling my starlight energy through it. A silver-blue circle of light spread outward from where it touched the earth, expanding in all directions. Wherever the light passed, purple contamination retreated, plants straightened, and the air cleared. But after extending about twenty meters in all directions, the light wavered and stopped.

I pulled the staff free, breathing hard from the effort. "My energy isn't enough. The forest is too vast, the contamination too severe."

"At least we have a path forward," Kael said, supporting me as I swayed slightly. "Once we seal the rift, we can head straight for Aria. Every moment we delay puts her in more danger."

We traveled through our purified zone and soon came upon a clearing in the forest. There, hovering in the air, was an enormous void rift, far larger than any I'd seen before. The trees around it were twisted into impossible shapes, and the sky above had taken on a sickly purple spiral pattern.

"This is bigger than any rift we've encountered," I said, feeling Stella stir restlessly within me.

Around the clearing, animal carcasses showed signs of grotesque mutation. Some were still moving slightly, despite clearly being dead.

"This is one of Valen's power sources," Kael analyzed, his face grim. "Sealing it will weaken his hold over Aria."

"We need to seal it quickly," I gripped the Tidesong Staff tightly. "For Aria. For this land."

Kael stood behind me, his hands on my shoulders. "My storm energy is yours. Let's do this together."

"Time is against us," I said urgently. "Every moment we delay, Valen's control over Aria grows stronger."

We positioned ourselves in the center of the clearing. My starlight merged perfectly with his storm, and I pointed the Tidesong Staff directly at the rift. As we began the sealing incantation, the rift trembled, its edges starting to contract.

"It's working!" I felt a surge of hope as the rift began to shrink.

Suddenly, voices and footsteps came from the forest edge. Nova flew back from her scouting position. "Flamescale scouts! Coming this way!"

"Valen must have sent them to check on the rift," Kael whispered, quickly dimming our light sources.

I looked longingly at the half-sealed rift. "We need to hide. If we're discovered, we'll never reach Aria."

The voices grew clearer, distinctly carrying the Flamescale accent: "Lord Valen said the rift energy was fluctuating..."

We hastily gathered our equipment and retreated deeper into the forest. Nova flew ahead, guiding us along a hidden path.

"This route is surrounded," Kael whispered. "We need to find another way to Flamescale territory."

Suddenly, the ground beneath my feet gave way. I felt myself falling into darkness, a hidden pit that had been concealed by years of forest growth.

"Lyra!" Kael reached for me, but he was pulled down as well.

As we fell into the darkness, I clutched the Tidesong Staff tightly, thinking only of Aria. Hold on, we're still coming for you.

When I regained consciousness, I found ourselves in what appeared to be an ancient underground temple. The walls were covered with elaborate carvings depicting what looked like void invasions from long ago.

Kael awoke beside me, while Nova searched for a way out through cracks in the ceiling.

"This place..." I ran my fingers over the carvings. "It looks like some kind of ancient observation post for void activity. Forgotten for centuries."

Suddenly, the air grew cold. A suffocating energy filled the room.

"Someone tried to seal my rift," a chilling voice echoed from the void. A dark cloaked figure materialized before us.

"Who are you?" I gripped the Tidesong Staff, feeling it tremble slightly in the presence of this entity.

"Some call me the Lord of Rifts," he chuckled darkly. "But you may call me the Void Lord."

Kael and I exchanged horrified glances. The Void Lord was supposed to be a legend, a story to frighten young dragons.

"Impossible," Kael stepped in front of me. "The Void Lord is just a myth."

The dark figure pointed toward the ancient carvings. "Your interference with my rifts has drawn my attention. This ancient observation post has recorded my existence."

The figure suddenly floated forward. I raised the Staff defensively, but he passed straight through our bodies.

An icy cold seized me, as if my very soul had been frozen. But then... nothing. No harm came to us.

"He can't hurt us," I realized with surprise. "At least not now."

Kael slowly stood up. "He's just a projection. His physical form is still trapped in the void."

The Void Lord hissed in displeasure. "Clever observation, Star-Chosen. But soon I will be able to fully manifest."

He turned toward the wall carvings, and I followed his gaze. My heart raced as I saw an ancient prophecy carved there—the Void Lord would open the final gate through a special pair of dragon bloodlines.

The carved image of those dragons made my blood run cold—a water dragon with starlight scales and a blue dragon with storm markings, uncannily similar to Kael and me.

"No..." I whispered, the implications hitting me like a physical blow.
