After getting into the car, James noticed that Kara was huddling timidly by the window. There was a hint of vigilance in her amber eyes. It seemed that she wanted to keep a distance from him.
He looked indifferent and asked in a cold voice, "Are you afraid of me?"
"No!"
Kara overreacted. When she realized that she couldn't conceal her fear, she lowered her head and didn't dare to look at him.
Kara had a feeling that he would raise his hand, so she closed her eyes out of fear. She felt so nervous that her heart missed a beat.
When she found that James touched her head in a gentle way, she breathed a sigh of relief and felt relaxed. Then she heard his nice and deep voice.
"You're on our side now, so I'll protect you. There's no need to be afraid."
Staring at her fuzzy hair on the top, James stretched his hand to stroke her little head.
When he realized what he was doing, James made a pause. But he found that it felt so good when he touched her hair, so he stroked her head again.
James just said that Kara was now on his side, so she didn't need to be afraid.
He meant that he would take care of her and protect her from now on.
Kara now felt relieved. "Uncle James, I'm not afraid," she said with a bright smile.
"Who was very scared just now and didn't even dare to breathe?"
Kara smiled a little foolishly. Her expression was a bit stupid and James had an impulse to pinch her little face.
Noticing that Kara was smiling fake in order to flatter and please him, James stroked her head again in punishment with a slight smile.
Nolan, who had just opened the car door, saw the smile breaking on James' lips. He opened his mouth in shock.
Mr. James had been expressionless all the time. He always looked so cold that no one dared to come close to him. But now, when he looked at the little girl in front of him, he was actually smiling with affection!
Nolan looked meaningfully at Kara who was still giggling. This girl made Mr. James smile. Wasn't she just like the burning sun that could melt a big chunk of ice?
That's so impressive!
When Kara saw Nolan get into the car, she suddenly shouted, "Oh, God. Uncle James. I forgot that I'm on duty today."
"Nolan helped you with that." James replied calmly.
Nolan's mouth quirked up. He was the assistant of the president of the SA Group and once a top science student in the college entrance examination. To be honest, he couldn't believe that he just helped a high school student clean the classroom.
However, since the president had given the order, he could only do as he told.
"Yes, Miss Kara. I've already cleaned the classroom for you. As for the others, don't worry. I've also dealt with them."
"Thank you, Nolan." Kara didn't expect that Nolan would have been so considerate. She was very grateful to him.
"Miss Kara, No thanks necessary. That's what I should do."
Hearing the girl sweetly call his name, Nolan felt so warm inside.
James frowned and squinted at Nolan. "Kara, call him Uncle Nolan from now on!"
'She calls him Nolan but calls me Uncle James. Does she mean that I'm old?'
"...."
The corners of Nolan's eyes twitched. 'She calls you Uncle James just to show her politeness. Why you got so mad?'
When they arrived at the villa, dinner had been ready.
After dinner, James watched Kara have a bowl of chicken soup. Kara was so full that she stood up.
"Miss Kara, just leave them here. I'll tidy them up. Don't get your hands dirty." Libby immediately stopped Kara when she saw that Kara was about to collect the plates from the table.
"It's alright. I've had such a delicious dinner, so I should help tidy up the table!"
Kara smiled and pushed Libby's hand away gently. She continued to collect the plates and then went to the kitchen.
What she said was true. In the past, what she ate and wore all belonged to herself, so she would not feel burdened.
But now she was at James' place. If she acted like a freeloader, she would feel uneasy.
Also, she didn't even know how to wash the dishes cleanly. She had been taught by Libby a few times, and now she wanted to practice more by herself.
Libby didn't know what to do, so she looked at James to see what he would say.
James stared at the little girl's back with a smile on his lips.
"If that's what she wants, just let her have fun."
Kara had been in poor health since childhood, so her parents definitely wouldn't allow her to enter the kitchen. After her parents passed away, she got sick from time to time, so she often went to the hospital. And the Quains didn't want her in the kitchen because they wanted to make a useless retard out of her.
Now she was free from control. If she wanted to help in the kitchen, as long as she didn't get hurt, he wouldn't stop her.
"Oh, my God!"
Suddenly, James heard the smash of plates breaking in the kitchen and Kara's shout.
