Harlan, just like Maricela, assumed Robert had gotten in on their company’s invitation.
Cedrick didn’t like Robert either, but he wasn’t about to escalate the drama in a place like this. Would calling security really make him look good?
He walked up to Lucille and held out his hand. “Let’s go. All of us, together.”
Lucille didn’t move, and she certainly wasn’t going to take his arm. Instead, she linked her arm with Robert’s.
“Lucille, don’t be so stubborn, okay?”
Cedrick just assumed Lucille was angry. “How about I apologize to you on Mari’s behalf later?”
Lucille: ?
?
?
Robert laughed. “What the hell is this?
What kind of sordid relationship do you two have?
You’re apologizing to your own wife on her behalf?
In what capacity are you doing that?
As her lover?”
A large crowd had gathered around them by now, all watching the spectacle. After Robert said that, a murmur went through the crowd.
Cedrick’s face turned purple with rage. “I’m calling you cousin out of respect, so show some!
This isn’t the place for you to do whatever you want!”
“Today, I’m going to do whatever I want. What are you going to do about it?”
Robert’s smile became more haughty and arrogant.

“You…” Cedrick looked at the surrounding crowd, controlling his emotions. No matter what, he had to consider the bigger picture and maintain his public image. So, swallowing his anger, he spoke only to Lucille. “Lucille, come here. This is just a matter between us. I’ll make it up to you later, buy you a new necklace, okay?
I’ve bought you so much jewelry, why are you wearing this one?”
He had heard Maricela’s “glass theory” and also thought this old–looking necklace was a cheap online knock–off.
“I won’t.”
Lucille didn’t move, instead leaning closer to her brother.
Her brother’s attitude showed he didn’t care if it blew up. Today was their home turf; they could do as they pleased, and it wouldn’t be him or her losing face.
“Lucille…” Cedrick felt a headache coming on. “You’re my wife. What does it look like for you to be hanging around with some so–called outsider cousin instead of with me?”
But Lucille just sneered, “Who’s the real outsider here?
My cousin would never make me apologize to an outsider!
I wouldn’t be bullied by outsiders if I were with my cousin!
And my cousin certainly wouldn’t let a thug stab me with a knife for an outsider!”
“Lucille!”
Cedrick got angry, hissing in a low voice, “What kind of place is this?
Can you really say things like that out loud?
Don’t you know people will laugh at us if they hear this?”
Lucille’s eyes were cold. “So you do know it’s wrong?
So, just saying these things makes us a laughingstock?
But you actually did them?”
Cedrick: …
Cedrick was left speechless by her comeback.

Harlan was already furious. “Why are you wasting your breath on him?
Just call security and have them thrown out!”

Seeing the situation escalating, some of the ladies and gentlemen in the crowd began to try and persuade Lucille.
“You’re Mrs. Maynard, right?
Just let it go. No matter how a couple argues in private, in a place like this, you should let Mr. Maynard save face. It’s all about keeping up appearances.”
“That’s right. This banquet is practically for Mr. Maynard. We all know he’s determined to win the collaboration with Rossi. Think of the bigger picture, Mrs. Maynard.”
“Fine.”
Lucille indicated she was willing to listen. “Make her apologize to me.‘
The “her,” of course, referred to Maricela.

“This is preposterous!”
Harlan was the first to explode. “You hit someone and you’re demanding an apology?
Even if you are Cedrick’s wife, you can’t bully people like this, can you?”
“Yeah, Mari was just trying to be nice, wanting to teach Mrs. Maynard how to socialize and make friends.”
