Chapter 263
It was as if he had become a completely superfluous person…
Grandma’s weak state just now had pierced his heart. Seeing Lucille and that man take Grandma into the car, he quickly got into his own car and chased after them towards the hospital.
When Lucille and Robert brought Grandma to the hospital’s emergency room, all the medical staff and patients were stunned, not knowing what had happened to make the old woman look like
this.
Soon, Grandma was wheeled into the trauma room for emergency treatment, while Lucille and Robert waited outside.
After several days of constant anxiety and sleepless nights, Lucille now sat on a chair, feeling as if her very soul had been drained, completely limp and without a shred of strength.
Robert sat beside her, gently guiding her head to rest on his shoulder. “It’s okay, Lucille, it’s okay…”
She was rescued, but what would happen to Grandma was still unknown until the doctor came out. How could Lucille’s anxious heart possibly be at ease?
Cedrick arrived at that moment, only to see the sight of Lucille leaning on Robert’s shoulder.
His face turned grim, but he controlled his emotions and walked up to them. “Lucille, how’s… Grandma?”
Lucille didn’t have the energy to waste a single word.
Robert was even less likely to acknowledge him, just gently patting Lucille’s shoulder and back, as if lulling her to sleep.
Cedrick sat down on Lucille’s other side and gently–took her hand.
He knew Lucille was heartbroken right now; he could empathize.
Back when his own grandmother was critically ill, he had been the same way, not wanting to talk to anyone.
Lucille kept her eyes closed, aware of who had sat down beside her and whose hand was holding hers.

These hands had led her into marriage five years ago. Back then, she had been full of hope for these hands, thinking they could hold each other through all of life’s storms.
But now, she just felt numb, unwilling to even waste the energy to pull away.
Whatever. She just wanted to wait quietly for Grandma to come out.
The lights in the waiting room were bright, and the sky outside was completely dark. Robert’s people brought over some food, but Lucille couldn’t eat at all.
Robert sighed and prepared to feed her spoonful by spoonful. Just as he brought a spoonful of soup to her lips, Lucille remembered that bowl of Rice Porridge her biological father had slammed onto Grandma’s face. She shook her head, ran to the trash can, and started to vomit violently.
“Lucille!”
“Lucille!”
Two voices called out at the same time, and both men rushed to her side, offering her water and
tissues.
“Don’t you know Lucille doesn’t like to eat this?”
Cedrick scolded, holding Lucille’s back.
Robert looked at him and sneered.
Cedrick didn’t know what that sneer meant. It felt like contempt, or like Robert was looking at him as if he were a joke.
As the two men faced off, the door to the emergency room opened.
The doctor came out.
Grandma was wheeled out too, with an IV drip, unconscious.
When Lucille asked the doctor how her grandma was, the doctor was furious. “This is too cruel!
“It’s inhuman!
“Who on earth did this?!
!”
Lucille was speechless.

She’d be ashamed to say her own father did it.

But the doctor didn’t press for an answer, just venting his anger. Then he answered Lucille’s question: “She’s extremely weak, close to circulatory failure. One more day and it would have been too late.”
Grandma had suffered so much!
When Lucille heard the words “circulatory failure,” she almost collapsed.
Robert held her steady and went with her to the hospital room with Grandma.
When they moved her from the gurney to the hospital bed, it was Robert who carried her.
Grandma was so light now, like a piece of paper in Robert’s arms.
