Chapter 24
Chapter 24
Natalie
"Everyday looks like a freaking nightmare." I mumbled.
I winced as the heavy pail sloshed, soaking my legs with frigid wash water. Laundry duty was the worst chore, leaving my hands pruned and numb for hours. But I bit back complaints - there were far worse ways to suffer here.
Around me other slaves scrubbed uniforms and bedding, sending up clouds of soap and steam in the cramped wash house. I kept my head down, working diligently. The mood had been uneasy lately, with guarded looks and whispered gossip trailing me in the halls.
Ever since Lucas and Leo's odd friendship kindled public speculation about my own potential ties to that Alpha, the other slaves regarded me with suspicion. As if I had any choice in attracting their fickle interests.
Mary believed resentment also played a role. "You are seen as ungrateful, enjoying favor from two powerful wolves while the rest suffer," she had warned. "Tread carefully, Natalia. Jealousy drives people to foolish acts."
I knew the truth of that too well. But there was little I could do except remain above reproach in my own behavior. I could hardly control Leo and Lucas's perplexing whims. Nor was I fool enough to rebuke an Alpha's attention and risk punishment.
A nearby snicker caught my attention. I glanced up to see two laundresses whispering behind their hands, flashing smug glances my way. My face heated - doubtless more crude gossip at my expense.
Jaw clenched, I scrubbed a shirt furiously, imagining it was their hateful faces. Still, vicious words floated to me over the noise. "...thinks she's too good for the rest of us now..."
"...sleeping her way to an easy life..."
I gritted my teeth and ignored them. Better not to react and invite more abuse. But their next petty comments ignited my temper.
"Going to be entertaining both Alpha brothers at once soon, I bet..." One cackled spitefully. "We all know the rumors about that one's appetite."
My head jerked up, outrage pooling hot in my chest. But before I could spit a retort, gentle Mary placed a staying hand on my arm.
"Don't sink to their level, dear one. Words have no real power over you," she soothed, through her eyes flashed with rare anger. My shoulders unknotted slightly. Bless her for intervening before I made things worse.
But my hope was short-lived. When Mary turned back to work, one of the gossiping slaves smirked and mimed a crude sexual gesture behind her back. Laughter broke out around us.
Fury exploded through me, hot as lava. With a guttural snarl, I launched the contents of my pail straight at the leering girl's head. Her shrieks echoed off the stone walls as sudsy water cascaded down her body.
For a frozen moment, shocked silence reigned. The girl gaped at me, sopping and flushed with humiliation.
Then pandemonium erupted. She flew at my nails first, screaming curses. We crashed backwards into the washing tubs, grappling furiously amidst shouts and splashing water. My fingers tangled brutally in her hair, wrenching her head back as she clawed at my face.
It took three other slaves to finally pry us apart, both dripping and bruised. I trembled with outrage, straining against the restraining hands. But a nearby throat clearing instantly stilled my struggles.
One of the Alpha's personal guards stood in the doorway, face an impassive mask. The head laundress rushed to make simpler excuses about our "clumsy accident." With a scornful glance at our disheveled states, the guard snapped, "Enough foolishness. Get back to work, all of you."
I ducked my head meekly, chest heaving as I wrung out my sodden skirts. It galled me to feign contrition, but showing defiance now would only bring harsh punishment.
Soon enough the guard departed and the laundry resumed. But the atmosphere remained tense, with muttered grumbling and baleful looks cast in my direction. I kept my gaze fixed on my washing, refusing to acknowledge the hostility bristling around me.
Only Mary dared approach me, squeezing my shoulder and murmuring, "Take no heed of their cruel words. You were noble to defend my honor." I managed a thin smile in response. At least my dearest friend understood.
The afternoon passed excruciatingly slowly. My earlier fury cooled to a rigid knot between my shoulder blades. I wanted only to finish my work swiftly, but each chore dragged interminably with tension thickening the air.
When the closing bell finally rang, I sagged in bone-deep exhaustion and relief. The other slaves bustled out, giving me a wide berth. I lingered to help Mary gather the leftovers for tomorrow's washing. Neither of us spoke, lost in weary thoughts.
We were making our slow way from the wash house when suddenly a tall figure stepped from the gloom of the passage ahead.
My pulse spiked in alarm - we were alone here, easy targets. But the broad form only folded his arms, regarding us silently.
I sagged in relief and resignation as James's scarred features became visible in the torchlight. The pack Beta oversaw discipline and compliance. His intense scrutiny never boded well. What lies had the other slaves told him?
Sure enough, James's deep voice was stern when he finally spoke. "There was an...incident in the laundry today. Carelessness leads to fighting, I'm told." His hard gaze fixed on me. "Have you anything to say for yourself?"
I stared at the floor, bitterness choking me. What point was there to defend myself when judgment was made? But Mary drew herself up straight and met James' eye unflinchingly.
"Begging your pardon, Beta. But you were not there to see the full truth of it." Her ordinarily soft voice rang strong with conviction. "Those girls taunted Natalia cruelly for things beyond her control. She was honorable to defend my virtue when their tongues turned foul and none else would stand up."
James blinked, seemingly taken aback to be challenged so openly. I stared at Mary in awe - I had never heard her speak so boldly, especially to one with power over us. She astounded me.
"Be that as it may, fighting between slaves must be punished." James' crossed arms were like a closing portcullis. "Your packmate ought to have shown more restraint despite the provocation."
Hot tears pricked my eyes before I could stop them. Of course - the injustice stung bitterly, but hardly surprised me anymore. I would bear the lashes in silence. There was never any other choice.
But Mary seemed to swell larger, radiating righteous fury. "Respectfully, Beta, what ought those hateful girls suffer for maligning an innocent packmate without cause? Will you hold them similarly accountable?"
Her words dropped like stones in the echoing passageway. Time itself seemed to hold its breath. James stared, rendered utterly speechless by Mary's audacity.
Before he could regain his voice, another shadow materialized from the gloom. My pulse stuttered - now what fresh peril awaited?
"No need for punishments just yet, I think." The figure stepped into the light, and my knees nearly buckled in relief. Leo.
He moved to stand shoulder to shoulder with Mary, a bulwark between us and James' looming form. Facing the Beta squarely, Leo said in a tone brooking no debate, "I know Natalia. She is no liar or brawler without cause. You will investigate this fully before taking action."
James's mouth tightened, but he nodded grudgingly. "Yes, Alpha." With a final piercing look, he stalked back the way he had come. Only once his footsteps had faded did I sag weakly against the wall, limp with reaction. We were safe, for now at least.
Leo turned to us then, smiling faintly. The expression transformed his handsome features into something gentler, almost boyish. He clasped my shoulder bracingly. "Well done, little wolf. Keep holding fast."
With a final wink, he too disappeared into the shadows, leaving Mary and I staring after him in wondering silence. She was the first to find her voice again, a smile dawning bright as sunrise on her weary face.
"You see? Holding on to hope is never wasted, even in dark times. Kindness still lingers if we nurture it."
Impulsively I embraced her, hugging fiercely. Her simple courage astounded me. She faced down an Alpha without hesitation to defend justice. I had much to learn from her example. Mary only hummed and smoothed my hair like a mother.
Together we walked back to the bunk room, spirits buoyed by this small victory. The future remained frighteningly uncertain, but tonight we were reminded that light persisted in the most unlikely places.
Even a ruthless pack Beta could be made to pause if truth was spoken bravely and allies stepped forward. The others might mock me as greedy or prideful, but Mary knew my heart. As did Leo, it seemed. I would cling to that knowledge.
For all their scorn, the crowd could not understand one who would risk herself to shelter innocence. They saw only selfish motivation in my actions. Let them.
Those who mattered knew better. As Mary said, kindness yet lingered, waiting to be nurtured. That would have to sustain us through the coming storms.
Tonight we had proven again that holding to high ideals was never wasted, no matter how fierce the headwinds. Light pierced deepest when darkness was absolute.
I would remember that in the trials still ahead. And someday, the light would prove triumphant.
