Chapter 85: Such Arrogance
Damian Black's POV:
No matter what, despite all else, Nadine thought it would be proper to question me, using a questionable tone this entire time she spoke to me while we were waiting to take off on the honeymoon trip. It was at this present point in time that I wasn't going to tolerate any more of such arrogance from her.
Right then, I started to turn to the side, looking at her out of the corner of my eye before I officially turned my head to meet the direction in which I was looking. My gaze was solely focused on her now, and she knew she had my full and utter attention. I don't exactly think this is the sort of reaction she was expecting right then.
I can assure you that my expression was no less than serious. If there's one thing I am not going to tolerate, it's that I didn't like being questioned. Especially by someone like her. Even my own men didn't bother to question me the way she chose to go about it. She needed to know that this wasn't a game and I wasn't going to tolerate it.
"Why would I tell you something like this if it certainly wasn't the case, Nadine?" I asked her in that moment.
I could definitely tell that the intensity of my stare caused her to give me a reaction. She seemed to sense how I was looking at her and knew that somewhere in that little head of hers, I wasn't pleased in the slightest. That alone caused her demeanor to change slightly as she slunk back in her seat. She even turned to look back to the front of her, as her body was facing the front of the plane.
Instead, her gaze looked down at the bag she held in her hands instead of receiving the full intensity of my gaze, as I was still sitting in her direction. No matter what, my expression didn't waver, nor did I bother to look away from her in that moment. If there's one thing I was going to do, it was to drive my point home.
It's one thing to ask a question like this while we're at dinner in front of her father. It is a completely different thing to do so in public. We were heading to a place that I knew fairly well. The place that I am most certain that she has yet to have visited. The last thing I was going to have was for her to act out in such a place.
I wanted her to know that I was irritated by her constant line of questions. As the heated moment went by, second by second, no one else bothered to say anything, as it was just the three of us in this cabin. She soon showed signs of being visually defeated. I narrowed my eyes for effect as I continued to watch her for a moment longer.
"I just..." she finally started to speak just as she glanced over to the side, looking at me, and then immediately broke eye contact again. I could tell she didn't like the intensity of this moment as she started looking over the bag she held in her grasp again. She inhaled deeply as she turned it over in her hands, where she could look at the front side of the bag before she spoke next. "I just thought..."
"You just thought what, Nadine?" I asked her as I was still looking at her, growing impatient as she was drawing this out.
During this entire time, the intensity of my staring did not change one bit. I didn't so much as change my tone either as I spoke to her. I wanted her to know that her line of questioning was not going to be tolerated in any slight. She was going to accept that as a fact.
One way or another, I was the one who chose this particular gift for her. It shouldn't matter how the item was picked up. I was the one who had it selected for her. That's all that mattered, and she didn't need to question that fact.
"I just thought that you had somebody else do it for you, is all," Nadine said without even bothering to look at me at this time.
At that moment, I slightly raised my chin. I knew she couldn't face me. She was still refusing to look at me, as to how I was looking back at her this entire time. If there's one thing that I knew about Nadine, it was that she didn't like to be scolded in any sort of way. The last thing she wanted to do was see the expression I kept sending her way.
"Do you have an issue with me going out and collecting something for you, Nadine?" I asked her instead, as she still had yet to look at me. "Do you think that little of me?"
I couldn't help but ask that last question. Then, on the other hand, I needed to figure out why she was so hell-bent on this current line of questioning about a gift I had someone place on the jet for when she arrived. It was supposed to be something special, something that she would admire. Or at least I had hoped that she would appreciate it.
Before, anytime I saw her, she would have to carry her phone in her hand or her pants pocket. She didn't have a bag or purse that I knew of, and this matched what she was wearing.
Suddenly, before she had a chance to respond, there was a slight shudder as you could feel a vibration. I took from this that the ground crew was hooking up to the landing gear as they were just about to pull us out onto the tarmac. As for the rest of my crew, they had just finished loading the necessary items in the storage compartments underneath so we could leave as well.
That's when the three of us could hear several sets of voices. They were growing louder, which confirmed that someone was coming up the airstairs. As to who these particular voices belonged to was anybody's guess. Just then, I noticed that it was her two men who were speaking as they came into view.
They used to work for Germaine, but since Nadine had requested they stay on with her as her bodyguards, they were now under my employment. Nadine used that moment to turn her frustration toward them instead.
