Chapter 302: Medical Miracle
Rachel knew she couldn’t expect anything good from her, but hearing it with her own ears still made her feel deeply uncomfortable.
Her expression turned cold. She tugged at the corner of her lips, her voice flat as water. Mrs. Wright, according to the law, anyone who deliberately fabricates and spreads false information that damages another person's reputation can be sentenced up to 3 years in prison, detention, surveillance, or deprivation of political rights.
If the defamatory behavior does not meet the criminal standard, the penalty is up to five days of detention or a fine of up to $500.
If you asked what had changed the most since she had been with Benjamin, it would be that her legal knowledge had grown significantly.
Usually, as long as she wasn’t working overtime or staying late at the hospital, he would bring his unfinished work home.
After working with him in the study a few times and overhearing several of his phone calls, she could easily recall these everyday legal facts.
Aurora's face, originally refined and well-maintained, but now made increasingly sharp and bitter by displeasure and criticism, nearly lost its composure when she heard these words.
She was shocked, astonished, and somewhat embarrassed and angry.“You… what do you mean by that?”Are you actually trying to get Benjamin to sue me? Don’t forget, no matter how bad our relationship is, I’m still his mother!
Defamation? Ridiculous! Which of my words isn’t true? How have I defamed you?
“If that’s the case, then I’ll ask Mrs. Wright to provide evidence that I’m two-faced and vain. When your words get out, they damage my reputation. What’s wrong with me legally protecting my own interests?”
After Rachel calmly asked the question, she no longer bothered to look at her conflicted expression.
Her instincts told her that a major drama was about to unfold in Aurora’s mind.
Less than two seconds after finishing her words, she stepped forward, ready to leave.
There didn't seem to be any surveillance cameras nearby, and no one else around. If Aurora accused her falsely, it would be hard for her to explain.
However, just as she was about to brush past Aurora, Aurora suddenly clutched her chest with one hand and her forehead with the other, swaying a few times, looking like she was about to collapse.
Sensing it might be a setup, Rachel instinctively stepped aside, immediately putting six feet of distance between them.
Aurora was truly enraged by this move.
Her eyes widened with anger and shock.
This was not what she had expected at all!
"You... why are you backing away?! You have made me so angry my head hurts, my chest feels tight, and I can not breathe properly. Do not you know to come help me?!"
To be honest...
Compared to Heather, Steven, Nancy, and even Claire, her acting was so poor it was almost unwatchable.
If this were a TV drama, people would already be criticizing her terrible performance.
She sighed silently, took two steps closer, and said softly, "Mrs. Wright, I know you do not like me. Although I do not know what I did to upset you, what you just said really hurt my feelings.
The Davis family has a solid reputation in Dawnlight City, and I certainly don’t lack money.
If outsiders found out you deliberately faked illness to frame me, and the Wright family's reputation was tarnished because of you, I wonder what Mrs. Jessica Wright and your children would think."
Aurora’s pupils trembled. She hadn’t expected Rachel to see through her.
"I'm deliberately faking illness? You are the one lying!"
She dropped her hands, furious. "Rachel, have you forgotten your place? How dare you threaten me like this? Take a look at yourself, are you even worth me faking illness to frame you?"
A medical miracle.
Her head did not hurt anymore?
Her chest was not tight anymore?
She could breathe smoothly now?
Rachel smiled slightly. "How could this be a threat? I'm thinking of you."
As soon as she finished speaking, four or five figures appeared around the distant corner, walking together in a group, accompanied by their clear, cheerful chatter and laughter, carried over to them on the damp, slightly chilly breeze.
Instantly shattering the tense atmosphere that had existed between them just moments ago.
Seeing the figures among the girls, Rachel's calm eyes, covered with a thin layer of frost, narrowed slightly.
Claire stopped in her tracks, looking at them with some surprise. "Mrs. Wright, Ms. Davis?"
When she met Rachel's scrutinizing gaze, she calmly shifted it to Aurora and hurried to her side. "Mrs. Wright, what's wrong? Are you feeling unwell somewhere? Why does your face look so pale?"
Two or three other girls also ran over to ask about Aurora's condition.
One girl who looked only about twenty years old directly questioned Rachel arrogantly, "What did you do to my aunt?!"
Rachel ignored her and kept her gaze steadily fixed on Claire.
She asked in a flat voice, "I'd like to ask first, Ms. Chase, what do you mean by that?"
Claire was startled, somewhat surprised and confused. "What... what?"
"What you just said seemed deliberately designed to make them misunderstand that I did something to Mrs. Wright."
This light remark was like invisibly slapping labels of "scheming" and "two-faced" all over Claire.
The surroundings suddenly fell silent.
Instead, the clear sound of water dripping from the eaves became much clearer.
Claire's heart jumped, somewhat surprised by Rachel's reaction.
Did she already know something?
Impossible!
As for Aurora faking illness to frame Rachel, she had only used a few sentences to guide things along.
Aurora hadn't told her the plan either.
She had brought so many people over actually just to be a witness, to use this commotion to draw everyone else over.
And to let Jessica, who favored Rachel, see what kind of character this granddaughter-in-law she had chosen had—how unworthy she was of Benjamin.
But the current situation was completely beyond her expectations.
She had always positioned herself as an innocent bystander.
But Rachel's words were about to drag her into this complicated situation, and might even arouse others' suspicion and doubt.
The people she had brought over hadn't become the witnesses she wanted, but instead became Rachel's propagandists.
Her nails dug into her palms, her expression deliberately relaxing for a moment.
She then seemed to just realize something and anxiously explained, "Ms. Davis, you've misunderstood. I just saw that Mrs. Wright's complexion didn't look good, and I was worried and anxious for a moment. I didn't mean what you're suggesting."
"Is that so?"
Rachel responded lightly. "Seems like it really was a misunderstanding. Ms. Chase and I have worked together for so long, and you really aren't that kind of person."
She shifted her gaze slightly, landing on another pretty face. "Then it must be that Ms. Wright's eyesight is not very good? I was clearly trying to help Mrs. Wright, but you saw it as me trying to bully Mrs. Wright. That's really unfair to me."
"Mrs. Wright, why don't you explain to them."
She turned the conversation again. "After all, this is my first time at the Wright Manor. Whether or not it’s as Benjamin’s girlfriend, even if I’m representing the Davis family, I’m still a guest.
But now I'm being misunderstood for no reason and questioned with this kind of attitude.
If this is not cleared up, my discomfort is a small matter, but if word gets out, it won't sound good for these ladies' reputations, that would be a big deal. Mrs. Wright, what do you think?"
