Chapter 24: elders confrontation

I met his eyes. “If the shoe fits.”
The growling and cries of agitation grew louder. Each man voiced his own opinion. I smiled, everything was going exactly as planned. Until…
“Attention everyone” Commander of the shield and tanks unit. General Grath, the third ranked commander and the fourth strongest person in my pack stood. “This isn’t just about a stray omega! My King. He could have been a spy sent to infiltrate our defense. Let's not forget the day he came. We were attacked by the rogues in the mountains."
My eyebrows knitted together.
“Enough!” growled general josh, commander of knives and swords unit, slamming his palm on the table. “We don’t have proof that he is a spy. And if he was truly that dangerous, why is he still alive?”
“Because our King has gone soft!” sneered commander Elliot, the wild-eyed West gatekeeper, the chief commander interrupted. He is the second strongest in the pack and the number one in the four commanders I have. My attention shifted to Catherine who was seated proudly beside him. She batted her lashes, but I met her gaze with a growl.
“Ever since that pup arrived, we’ve seen hesitation where there used to be fire! If we don’t act, the other territories will think we’ve been... tamed by a little boy omega.”
A low warning growl escaped my throat before I could stop it.
“I have not gone soft,” I said, stepping to the center. “I crushed three rebel dens last month. I slit the Alpha of Dunehill from throat to groin. Don’t mistake my silence for weakness.”
Their argument and dissatisfaction died in their throats. But I saw it in their eyes.
the doubts and the cause of their agitation... It wasn’t just about Milo anymore.
It was about me, their king.
To know whether I was still fit to rule the strongest independent pack in the world.
My wolf stirred uneasily.
“I’ll remind you all,” I said slowly, “that no decision regarding punishment will be made on fear alone. We have order and rules. Which we will follow till our last breath. Not needless emotion.”
“I know what our tradition says about someone who committed treason” Commander Rogan shot back fearlessly.
There was a collective gasp in the hall.
“Death…”
I met him, gaze for gaze, my aura exploding out. “If you’re so desperate to see blood, why not offer your own.”
The hall went dead silent.
Then Catherine stood. Graceful, and Cold. She flipped her auburn hair seductively and stepped to the center.
My body tensed uncontrollably, despite my tough font.
“I’m curious, Alpha,” she said, turning to me. “Why do you defend a common pet so fiercely? Even after he tried to poison you. Or is this about something else entirely?” She smiled knowingly.
The silence that followed could’ve cracked glass.
My jaw tightened. My claws pressing against my palm.
She smiled. “Or was the attempt not enough to outweigh his, you know…other services?”
Laughter, half-muffled, rippled around the room. As every eye turned towards me.
I didn’t flinch, I couldn't afford to. “That’s none of your concern.”
“So it’s true then,” she whispered with fake innocence. “You're blinded by an omega.”
“Enough!” I roared, slamming my hand with a powerful force. The whole hall shuddered from the force attached to my outburst.
“The traitor will be publicly whipped tomorrow dawn.” the words sounded like poison in my mouth.
I didn’t wait for any other rebuttals. Didn’t wait for them to see the flicker in my eyes.
“this meeting is over.”
I stood and stormed out of the hall. leaving behind chaos, and confused whispers in my wake.

Two days later,
My eyes opened to the sound of laughter.
It wasn’t the kind of laughter you hear when people are happy, and definitely not the type you would ever want to wake up from sleep to. It was the cruel and wicked type.
I blinked awake. Or tried to adjust my eyes to the now familiar dark cell that has been my home for a while now. I suddenly regret waking up. As the pain registered in my brain.
The pain coming from my backside was mostly gone, but my body continued to ache. My limbs were all stiff, and my back was sore from curling together for a long time, and I was pretty sure I’d been using a rat as a pillow. Fantastic
“Sleeping beauty still in bed?” one of the guards cackled up, his mates joining in a thunderous laughter, as the sound of the cell door creaked in the silence.
“Stand up traitorous bitch, Today is the day you die.”
Their boots covered my vision, and before I could react, rough hands dug into my collarbone jerking me up unceremoniously.
Another grabbed my arm and yanked without care, my whole body screamed in pain, but I gritted my teeth. I didn’t give them the pleasure of seeing my pain. At least, until I couldn't bear it.
“You know what bitch.” One of them that had a sinister scar across his face, the most beefy and ruthless among them, stepped forward gripping my jaws. “Words are circulating that you are good in bed. How about you perform for us all. Maybe this daddy here will save you.”
Boisterous Laughter filled the cell.
Disgust and bitterness welled up my heart. And without thinking my mouth moved, as my spittle landed,
Right into the scarred man's face.
Their faces froze in shock, their taunts and laughter stopping almost immediately.
A beat passed, maybe two, before they reacted, their faces coloring.
The one I hit, Rowan, had the most dramatic expression. From taunting to shock, then anger, back to a sadistic smile. The kind of smile wolves show right before they rip out their prey's throat.
“Well, well,” he said softly, brushing the slime off his face. “Looks like the bitch pet wants to play dirty.”
“Maybe we clip his tongue before the actual punishment. Break him.before the actual punishment.” another suggested with an evil grin.
Rowan cracked his knuckles, looking down at me like he was judging which bones to start from. “Nah, I’ve got something even more special for him. Something that…”
But the expected blow didn't land.
“Enough.”
A calm voice cut through the air. Voice filled with calm authority.
The guards straightened instantly hearing the woman's shout.
