Chapter 10: On the Front Lines
Bad news? Jake asked.
Please, Lucas talk to be, I really need to know what's happening, Jake said.
But Lucas kept pacing back and forth in front of the sitting room. His mind was racing with how to break the news to his closest friend, Jake.
"I need to talk to both of you," he said, glancing at Jake, who was sitting on the couch.
Jake stood up.
"What's going on, Lucas?" he asked.
Lucas sat down next to Jake and took a deep breath.
"There's no easy way to say this, but I'm leaving town," he said, looking down at his hands.
Mabel's smile vanished, "Leaving town? Why? When?" she asked, her voice shaking.
Lucas looked up at her, his eyes filled with pain, "I have to go.
My pack needs me.
There's a war coming, and we need to prepare," he said, his voice barely above a whisper.
Jake stood up, "What war?
What are you talking about?" he asked, his voice rising.
Lucas looked up at him, "The vampires are planning an attack, and we need to be ready," he said, his voice steady.
Mabel sat down next to Lucas, "But you can't just leave.
We need you here," she said, tears streaming down her face.
Lucas put his hand on hers, "I know, and I'm sorry.
But I have to go. I'll come back as soon as I can," he said, trying to reassure her.
Jake looked at Lucas, "What about us? What are we supposed to do without you?" he asked, his voice filled with anger and frustration.
Lucas looked at him, "You'll be fine. You don't need me.
You have each other," he said, trying to sound convincing.
Mabel looked at Jake, "Lucas is right. We have each other.
We'll get through this together," she said, trying to comfort him.
Jake sat back down on the couch, "I don't know if I can do this without you, Lucas," he said, looking down at the floor.
Lucas put his hand on Jake's shoulder, "You can. You're strong. You're a werewolf," he said, trying to encourage him.
Mabel looked at Lucas, "When are you leaving?" she asked, her voice trembling.
Lucas looked at her, "Tonight. I have to go now," he said, standing up.
Jake looked up at him, "Can we at least say goodbye?" he asked, his voice cracking.
Lucas looked at him, "Of course. I wouldn't leave without saying goodbye," he said, his eyes filling with tears.
Mabel stood up and hugged Lucas, "Be safe," she whispered in his ear.
Lucas hugged her back, "I will. You both take care of each other," he said, before turning to leave.
Jake stood up and followed Lucas to the door, "I'll miss you, man," he said, giving Lucas a hug.
Lucas hugged him back, "I'll miss you too, buddy. Stay strong," he said, before walking out the door.
Mabel and Jake watched as Lucas got into his car and drove away. They stood there in silence, not knowing what to say.
Finally, Mabel broke the silence, "What are we going to do without him?" she asked, tears streaming down her face.
Jake hugged Mabel tightly, trying to comfort her. "We'll be okay. We'll take care of each other," he said, his voice barely above a whisper.
Mabel pulled away from Jake, wiping the tears from her face, "But how are we supposed to move on without him?" she asked, her voice shaking.
Jake took a deep breath, "We'll figure it out. We'll find a way to move on. We have each other, and that's all we need," he said, trying to reassure her.
Mabel nodded, "You're right. We have each other," she said, smiling weakly.
But as the days turned into weeks, Jake and Mabel found it hard to move on. They missed Lucas terribly and couldn't help but worry about him.
They cooked meals together, watched movies, and went on long walks in the woods behind their house.
It was on one such walk few days after that Jake found a small clearing where the moon shone bright and full. "Mabel, come look at this!" he called out excitedly.
Mabel hurried over to where Jake was standing, her curiosity piqued. "What is it?" she asked, looking around.
Jake pointed up at the sky, "Look at the moon. It's so bright," he said, smiling.
Mabel looked up at the moon, a smile spreading across her face. "It's beautiful," she said, taking Jake's hand in hers.
The next night, as they were sitting on the couch, Mabel turned to Jake, "Do you think he's okay?" she asked, her voice filled with worry.
Jake sighed, "I don't know. He hasn't called or texted us since he left. It's not like him to go silent like this," he said, his voice full of concern.
Mabel bit her lip, "What if something happened to him? What if he's in danger?" she asked, tears forming in her eyes.
Jake put his arm around her, "We don't know that. He could be fine. We just need to wait for him to reach out to us," he said, trying to reassure her.
But the waiting was hard. Jake and Mabel went through their days, constantly worrying about Lucas and wondering when they would hear from him.
Finally, around 11:45 AM two days later, the phone rang. Jake answered it, and his heart skipped a beat when he heard Lucas's voice on the other end.
"Jake, Mabel, I need your help," Lucas said, his voice urgent.
Jake and Mabel exchanged worried glances, "What's wrong?" Jake asked.
"There's been an attack. The vampires ambushed us, and we're badly outnumbered. I need you to come help us," Lucas said, his voice filled with desperation.
Jake and Mabel didn't hesitate. They packed their bags and got in the car, heading towards the place where Lucas and his pack were fighting for their lives.
As they drove, they couldn't help but worry about what they would find. Would they get there in time to save Lucas and his pack? Or would they arrive too late, only to find devastation and heartbreak?
Finally, they arrived at the scene of the battle at exactly 1:16 PM. It was chaos, with werewolves and vampires fighting tooth and nail. Jake and Mabel could barely make out Lucas's form among the melee.
But then they saw him, and their hearts sank. Lucas was badly injured, lying on the ground and bleeding out.
Jake and Mabel rushed to his side, tears streaming down their faces.
"Lucas, no!" Mabel cried, her voice filled with anguish, throwing her arms around him.
Lucas hugged her back, tears in his eyes. "I missed you guys so much," he said, his voice choked with emotion.
Jake smiled at him, "We couldn't stay away. We had to make sure you were okay," he said, patting Lucas on the back.
Lucas weakly opened his eyes and smiled at them, "I knew you would come," he said, his voice barely above a whisper.
Jake and Mabel held Lucas's hand, trying to comfort him as he took his last breath. They were heartbroken, but they knew that they had to stay strong for each other.
As they sat there, grieving their loss, they knew that their lives would never be the same without Lucas. But they also knew that they had each other, and that would be enough to get them through the tough times ahead.
But then, as they were getting ready to leave, they heard a strong rustling in the bushes. They turned to look, and their hearts skipped a beat when they saw a figure emerging from the shadows with a powerful wind.
Run! Mabel!!
