Chapter 14
Xaxas
I knew what I’d done the night before was going a bit too far, and for it, I would have put my mate in danger if not for attempting to thwart them with their own game. All I do in this life is for her. With me on the force, she would have the law to keep her from the priests since it seemed no one would leave me alone until I did something other than what I wanted. Honestly I could just be done with all this by taking over this world. The amount of death though from the humans new contraptions would be the issue. They would destroy themselves before they would kneel now being so independent, so she would benefit from the easier option of keeping them ignorant. She would be directly under the treaty’s protection, and I only did this because she wanted to be around humans.
That, and I knew she would live so long as no one killed her, like most supernaturals. My crest did not glow, so I think I was doing the right thing. My chest’s crest glowed in the presence of my kin and other gods, yet there was nothing from her. I hadn’t killed anyone yet either. They needed more than just some wax to petition a war, as fucking stupid as that was for their people. They would be the ones who probably would die the most, regardless of their new toys.
You would think being the princess of the wolves, as well as the mate of the king of the entire realm would convince them otherwise, but it seemed they had no common sense.
“Don’t answer the door for anyone, even your family while I’m gone. I’ve warded the building, but you’ll break it if you invite them in.” I warned, and she nodded.
“They would call before coming anyway… plus it’s really icy on the roads, and ….and like midnight. I doubt they’d come unless it was important.” She said trying to soothe me, but she also yawned. It was a little underhanded that I’d done that to her, but she did need her rest.
“They would have come running if they heard your screams last night, little mate.” I chuckled, teasing her was easy. I loved seeing her blush a rosy-red, pushing me out the door. I hoped she would understand however the seriousness of my words. I really meant it about the door. Breaking the spells would mean anyone could come in and take her, but she would be asleep until morning.
“Out! Out I say!” She pushed me out and slammed the door squealing. I knew she could hear me laughing. I wanted to continue teasing, but it would have to wait.
I put one more ward on the house in case my generals should wake and decide to get too close. If she heard me, she, nor anyone else would understand the language I spoke, as it didn’t exist for them. Around the parking lot I made an invisible dome that would prevent any with ill intention to enter. The only beings it wouldn’t be able to stop would be the earth goddess Lia, my father or Arviel…. It isn’t being paranoid if she could die pretty much by accident. With my grip I could turn ash to stone with just the pressure and a little heat…. My generals could not do this, but whatever strength they had would be more than enough to end her. I shook my head. I was letting my newfound fear run away with me. I’d never felt it before, and I realized now that this must be how mortals feel, but they didn’t matter. They only held peace because of her.
I Doogled the ‘Bison City Secret Police’ on my phone and found the address. I should have just teleported, but I still held a feeble notion that maybe, just maybe, I had kept myself undetected. Not after my anger last night…
Not after this world literally trembled under my feet. I had made a large mistake, one I couldn’t take back, but at least here I knew they would listen. The Secret Police to my understanding were supernatural creatures as well as mortals who knew the laws and maintained the delicate peace after I allowed the promise to be fulfilled.
I pulled into a parking space, and relaxed my restraint I’d placed on myself. I figured here would be a safe place as any to do so, but also because I still wasn’t used to doing it. I opened the door, and people could feel my power. I released my horns as well, letting them spiral out as honestly, I hated hiding them. There was never a need too back then, however it seemed they caught the attention of everyone. The officers all turned their heads, as this was nothing they’d probably ever felt before. I don’t think Jerold showed them his true presence, and if he had, they still seemed to not be used to a king’s aura…. They were weaklings. I said nothing to them, and all activity in the office halted to a silence. The only noise to be had was the occasional ringing of their phones, which were gingerly answered by a female wolf who smelled very human.
However, I was impressed. One of them that smelled of centaur approached me. He was a tall man, almost the height I chose, with ebony skin and light brown patched hair. “May we help you Old One?” He asked, bowing as he did so. He held a human form, though with centaurs I believe that they had trouble holding the visage of a full human for long periods.
“I seek the one who runs this place.” I looked at him stiffen, taking two steps back, but it was unwarranted. I wasn’t upset, though my tone maybe startled him. Another officer, one who smelled of panther bowed before me stepping in front of him.
“Forgive my partner Old One, may I ask your name and reason for visiting the office today?” He asked politely, and I’d forgotten to get my identification out the car. I trusted they wouldn’t doubt my word.
“I am Xaxas… and I wish to speak with,” I looked at the nametag on the back door. “Chief Sparkles.” There was a hush again over the officers, who worried for not only themselves, but more so for their captain. They moved aside, allowing me to go speak with this man.
I walked into the back, looking for an area where the leader of this small group would be. He sat at his desk, writing something, not noticing that I’d even come in the room. He was a unicorn. They are pure hearted creatures… it would make sense that a being created from purity itself lead such an operation. As noble as Jerold, Ashital, or any of the kings were, they were all corruptible.
The room smelled far too sweet, as it radiated not only from his scent, but also his cup. His coffee was more sugar and cream than anything. He gave no bow, but he did raise his cup to me. He did not smell of fear either. Interesting. He pointed for me to sit in front of him.
His office was littered with papers, photos on his desk, and of all things, a bowl of pure sugar. White sugar once was more coveted than gold, and was a show of status. To have this sit here without an ant in sight would have any mortal king nearly frothing at the mouth with envy, yet now it was something simple. He sipped his syrup-like coffee, smiling lightly as he did so.
“I have come on behalf of my mate and bride…. I intended on suppressing my aura at least another century or so, but the humans raised my ire.” I grumbled.
“I do not understand…. What could we possibly do for you? Do you wish to join our cause your highness?” He asked honestly. His white glittering hair sparkled in his office light.
“Only because I know the hearts of mortal men… they will try to harm my weak little mate while my back is turned. They thought they held power, though now they see me as a threat since I am the reality crashing down on their petty thoughts of grandeur...” I growled, but he held up his hands.
“That, and your presence is most likely felt by the Holy Seat himself right now. Soothe your temper your highness, it isn’t needed here.” Said the Chief. I closed my eyes… I wasn’t used to being questioned. For her I would try.
“Right… It’s why I wish to join you all. The Church doesn’t recognize my reign, which leaves my mate unprotected should I turn my back. I feel they will become bold, as they feel it would be what Arviel wants of them.”
“They become bold after the local Bishop became scalded with third degree burns 45 percent of his body. He’s in the hospital your grace.” He said sternly. He glared me in the eyes without fear or hesitation with his words, but honestly… it was a bit welcome. As much as it aggravated me, it gave me confidence in his little group that they were experienced...
“Then what will you do? Imprison me?” I chuckled, but he did not.
“Technically, you should already be in cuffs my lord, however I know that will not work. You will not willingly go anywhere, as I know your worry for your small mate. Harmony is a sweet one…” He put his hand to his forehead, but I let out a deep growl.
“I did not tell you my mate’s name.” My eyes created their own light from my pupils. It was something I hoped Harmony would never see, but he would this day.
“Be Calm High King; I meant no harm. She’s Lieutenant Jerold’s adopted grandfoal. All he ever talks about are his babies. Her baby photos along with her mother’s, and the other children he’s adopted are all over his office.” He chuckled. “The Church came in here this morning demanding your head on a stick. They know it isn’t possible…. But you still can’t commit acts of wrath. I’ll call their Cardinal. He should be here in the next half hour or so. Honestly I’m glad you came before I left so I don’t have to deal with this in the morning….” He mumbled picking up the phone.
“I’m already on my way horse.” Growled a human hanging up.
“I can’t be here that long! What of my mate?!” I stood, but he remained seated, drinking his coffee, and adding another cube…. It seemed the coffee for him was only a device to melt his prize of pure sugar.
“From what the witches tell me, at least two absolution spells are placed on the building. None can enter the complex unless you allow, and we have no information on the second, as it’s embedded in the first spell…. She’s fine. Just in case though, I have about 5 unmarked cars with witches, minitours, vampires, and a half demon watching the place.” He said calmly, and I sat down…. This was probably why Jerold wanted me to buy one of his homes rather than his condo. Less humans.
“Then what do you suppose then?” I asked, but he poured me a cup of coffee. I made sure for fuck’s sake that it was black. I did like mine with milk, but knowing him if he knew that, it would be as sweet as his smelled. That was more nauseating than the smells of sinner’s guts.
“For now, let’s wait for the Cardinal, but in the meantime, don’t think because you’re a king that you’ll get special treatment here.” he said with a small smile
