Chapter 39: Seeking Death
The massive force sent Layla spinning half a circle on the spot. The glass of red wine in her hand splashed all over her evening gown, and she fell to the ground in a mess.
The entire banquet hall instantly fell silent.
All the guests around couldn't help but freeze for a moment, and even the melodious symphony seemed to stop at that instant.
Everyone stopped what they were doing and stared wide-eyed at Evelyn, who stood there trembling with rage.
They didn't recognize this young girl in the white dress, but they absolutely recognized Layla lying on the ground!
And Silas standing beside her, whose face had instantly turned dark as thunder!
The Morgan family was a famous business powerhouse in the area!
With extremely high social status and deep connections.
And this girl from the bottom of society, who came out of nowhere and snuck into this kind of place, actually dared to publicly slap Layla in the face at such a high-end social event, in front of everyone?!
This wasn't just slapping Layla's face—this was grinding the entire Morgan family's dignity into the ground!
After a brief deathly silence, a wave of low gasps erupted from the guests.
Then their looks toward Evelyn instantly changed from contempt to deep pity.
This girl was completely finished.
Having angered the Morgan family here, if she didn't have some terrifying backing, tonight she would definitely die a very, very ugly death! She might end up as an unidentified floating corpse in the river by tomorrow.
"My face... it hurts so much!"
After a brief moment of shock, Layla on the ground immediately reacted.
She didn't get up to fight Evelyn. Instead, she covered her swollen cheek and let tears fall like broken pearls, crying pitifully.
"Everyone look! This crazy woman! Not only did she try to seduce my husband, but after I exposed her, she actually hit me! How can there be such a vicious woman!"
In the eyes of these self-proclaimed noble upper-class people, Evelyn, this "lower-class person," was simply a savage!
"Where's security? Hurry up and arrest this violent lunatic!"
"So arrogant! Failed to seduce Silas and still dares to hit people in public. This kind of trash from the bottom should be thrown in jail!"
"Silas, you absolutely can't let her get away with this!"
The accusations and curses from the surrounding people pressed down on Evelyn. At this moment, Silas finally found the perfect reason to explode. He helped Layla up from the ground with a face full of concern, holding her tightly behind him. Then he turned around and stared at Evelyn with a vicious look, as if he wanted to devour her.
"You little bitch, you're asking for death!"
Silas roared, putting on an act of being extremely protective. He suddenly raised his large palm and, with a sharp whooshing sound, swung it with all his strength toward Evelyn's face!
With Silas's strength as an adult man, he could definitely knock out half of Evelyn's teeth on the spot, or even give her a severe concussion!
Watching that palm rapidly growing larger, Evelyn instinctively closed her eyes in fear and stood there in despair.
The strong wind hit her face.
However.
One second.
Two seconds.
The expected severe pain didn't land on Evelyn's face.
The previously noisy cursing around them suddenly stopped.
The entire banquet hall once again fell into an extremely eerie silence.
Evelyn trembled as she opened her eyes.
She saw Silas's thick arm now frozen stiffly in mid-air, less than ten inches from her cheek.
A well-defined hand was gripping Silas's wrist tightly!
The tremendous force even made Silas's wrist bones emit a "crack" sound!
Following that hand, Evelyn's eyes instantly turned red, and tears of grievance could no longer be controlled.
Beside her, at some unknown moment, a tall and familiar figure had appeared.
Ethan wore a well-tailored black suit, his face cold as frost.
"Ethan!"
Seeing Ethan standing in front of her, Evelyn's eyes first filled with surprise, then quickly filled with worry and anxiety.
Thinking of the terrible truth she had just deduced, she wanted to tell Ethan all about the dirty deeds Layla and Silas had done over the years. "Ethan, your imprisonment back then wasn't an accident at all! It was them—"
"It's okay, I know everything."
Ethan released Silas's hand and stepped forward to shield Evelyn completely behind his broad back.
He turned his head slightly and said in a low, reassuring voice, "Leave this to me."
Hearing Ethan's deep and powerful voice, Evelyn's violently trembling shoulders gradually calmed down, feeling a full sense of security.
Silas, who had been thrown back two steps, rubbed his nearly crushed wrist and exchanged a glance with Layla. After a brief moment of shock, he instantly recognized the man before him!
"Ethan?"
Layla screamed out, as if she had seen something hilarious. The resentment on her face from being hit instantly transformed into extremely twisted arrogance and contempt.
"I wondered who was playing hero here! Turns out it's you, the ex-con who just got released from prison!"
Hearing the words "prison" and "ex-con," the surrounding guests' looks became even more contemptuous.
Silas also recovered at this moment. He sneered while straightening his disheveled designer suit, staring at Ethan like looking at a bug, his voice extremely loud.
"Ethan, instead of picking through trash in the slums, what are you doing here at this kind of event, you ex-con? I get it now..."
Silas pretended to have a sudden realization, his eyes sweeping over Evelyn's evening gown without a price tag with extreme contempt.
"You poor siblings must have used some means to sneak into the Foster family's banquet, trying to mooch food and drinks here, and maybe steal some valuable things while you're at it?"
"He's actually a just-released criminal!"
"No wonder this woman has no manners and dares to hit people. Turns out they're a whole family of thugs and thieves!"
"Call security quickly! How can this kind of lowly felon breathe the same air as us? It's simply an insult to us!"
The surrounding guests covered their mouths and noses, backing away with disgust on their faces, as if Ethan carried some deadly virus.
Facing the overwhelming curses and accusations, Ethan's face showed no emotion, only his eyes grew darker.
Actually, from the moment he entered the banquet hall, Ethan's enhanced perception abilities from the serum modification had already picked out Layla and Silas's disgusting voices among these hundreds of people.
In his eyes, this couple who had once ruined his future were now nothing more than two ants he could crush at will.
So he hadn't bothered to immediately settle accounts with them.
But he never expected that these two insects who didn't know their place would not only fail to keep a low profile, but would actually dare to target Evelyn!
Seeking death!
