Chapter 75 Cold rejection
Madison's POV
My whole body was burning from within.
Oh God.
I was in heaven or hell, whichever it was.
I was dead.
It had to be that because I remembered clearly that Kat had let me drown.
They knew I couldn't swim. Wait, how did they even know?
I had never told anyone that.
Trust me, I tried to swim to the surface but the chemical - It was ...
Intoxicating.
It was harsh.
I held my breath until I just couldn't do it any longer, giving into it.
Wishing my life didn't have to end that way.
My ears tinged. It was as though they had just unlocked the gates to hearing. The sound of beeping machines rang loud, buzzing my brain.
Why was it so piercing.
"Seriously Adrianne, are we still keep going to act like nothing happened?"
That voice. I recognized it.
"Look Nikolai. Here's not the right place to talk about it. Besides, you know we weren't supposed..." She paused for a while, reducing her voice. "We weren't supposed to be sexual with each other. Alessandro will flip if he hears it."
"You're an adult!" Nikolai's voice was hard. "He wouldn't be mad forever if that's what you want. Except you're saying you don't feel same way I feel for you."
Adrianne scoffed, scornfully. "Now you feel for me? How about 6 years ago. Nikolai, you said I was just like a sister to you after secretly hiding whatever we had going on for 8 months."
Her voice was thick with pain.
"I was stupid okay? Adrianne, you can get mad at me for as long as you want but that sex wasn't nothing and you know it. Adrianne -"
Subconsciously, my fingers twitched.
Shit. Not now.
I want more gist.
Adrianne didn't tell me about fucking Nikolai. I knew there was something between those two.
Nikolai always looked at Adrianne in some special kind of way. Not as a sister but more as a ... Lover.
He was always overprotective of her and wanted to know her every move and also if she was facing difficulties.
"Is she awake?" Adrianne's voice rose up, alarm. "Stop talking, Nikolai."
Noooo!
"I'll go get the doctor." Nikolai said, his voice so small that I almost missed it.
My body began to recuperate. My eyes twitched at first and then opened. I winced sharply, shutting my eyes close immediately.
"Holy shit." Adrianne's warmth on my arm was gone but not for too long. "You can open your eyes now, M. I'm here."
I knew. I heard too, Adrianne.
I wasn't going to tell her that.
Trusting her words, I peeled my eyes open. Slowly and steady. The strong smell of drugs and injection hit my nostrils almost making me gag.
My eyes trailed all over the room, taking in the setting. There was a heart monitor by the side and a drip connected to my vein.
I tried to open my mouth but it felt too stiff. When I managed too, I almost choked on my dry throat.
"Oh right." Adrianne rushed to the table, coming back with a straw and water.
I leaned forward, taking a sip. I almost cried out when the water hit the back of my throat.
Water.
Funny how it almost killed me and also gave me a sense of life. The irony.
"Oh thank goodness you're awake. It's been almost 2 weeks and I was really thinking the doctors were bluffing." Adrianne had this sad look in her eyes.
"Two weeks?" I croaked out.
"Almost."
"Shit." I cussed, my eyes searching the room for -
"You're looking for Alessandro?" Adrianne spoke up, a smug look on her face.
"N-no." I lied through my teeth. Adrianne helped me sit up carefully.
"He was here until yesterday. He had something important to handle and so he left." She explained, smoothing my hair.
"How.. how did I get h.. here?"
Surviving was the last thing at the back of my mind. I was in a place I didn't know, without a device or anything that can be used to track me.
Definitely, I knew I was done for.
"Alessandro and the boys saved you. More of Alessandro. He dived right into -"
"Oh hey dear. You're awake." The doctor interrupted us. I smiled small at Nikolai who looked so happy to see me and then to the doctor, before nodding.
"I feel like shit." I told him truthfully.
"It's expected. Potassium Cyanide was slipped into the water, hence the medically induced coma you were put through." He explained, putting on his stethoscope. "You'd be urinating frequently and yeah, it might be a little bit red. It's fine. You're just flushing the chemical from your system."
"Oh"
"After 2 days of observation and you're okay, you'd be discharged. Fair?" He raised his eyebrow at me.
I nodded quietly.
"You'd be given medication for the bruise and pain relief." He said after a while. "Have a nice rest."
"Thank you doctor. Nikolai will see you out." Adrianne said, staring pointedly at Nikolai.
She was really trying to get rid of him.
"You should -" Her ringtone interrupted her speech. She searched for the phone and then excused herself to the extreme end of the room.
Alessandro saved me.
My eyes pricked with tears.
Why did he do that? Was he okay?
Adrianne used hand movement as she talked, constantly looking towards my direction. She rolled her eyes, her lips hard to read.
"I can't SNAP her" Adrianne balled her hand into a fist.
"Adi.." I paused, catching my breath. Why was I so out of breath. When she turned to face me, I waved my free hand.
Her eyes snapped open, panic set in them. She rushed to me, her eyes roaming my body.
"Are you okay? Is something wrong?"
I shook my head.
"Adrianne. Is something wrong with her? Is she okay? Answer me. Goddamit."
Sounds like my man.
Whoa.
My man?
He wasn't my man.
Not yet.
Okay, shut up.
"Can...can I talk to him?" I pointed at the phone.
"W...who?"
"Let me talk to Alessandro." I said firmly. She nodded, handing the phone to me.
Silence lingered in the air for a long while, I almost thought he hung up.
"Alessandro." My voice was low enough for him to hear me clearly. The way he sucked in his breath told me he heard me too.
"I want you... here with me." I held the phone tightly, hoping he didn't turn me down.
He sighed, heavily. "Ma..." He paused, reviving the silence.
Then the phone went dead.
A cold rejection.
Typical Alessandro.
