Chapter 159
"Alexander? What are you doing?"
Looking at Alexander, Charlotte was a bit surprised.
Was he still not giving up, coming here again to plead for Calvin?
Sure enough, Alexander's first words confirmed Charlotte's guess.
"Charlotte, do you have to be so heartless?"
"Have you even thought about what you'll actually gain from pursuing this, besides getting Calvin punished a little and letting Jenna vent her anger?"
Charlotte instantly understood what Alexander was implying.
It didn't matter how much Jenna was hurt, or whether her and Jenna's reputations were slandered. But if Calvin got punished because of it, that was what mattered!
She'd known him since they were young, been married to him for seven whole years, bore his children and managed the household. Yet in his heart, she still wasn't as important as Calvin.
If not for his indulgence and favoritism, how would Calvin dare to mock and disrespect her every time they met?
Charlotte pulled her hand back, staring into Alexander's deep eyes. Her voice was calm but unyielding. "But I just want to vent this anger."
Alexander looked at her quietly, his voice cold. "Do you believe that with just a little effort, I could get Lenora to change her testimony? Then you'll only be asking for trouble."
Charlotte looked back at him and slowly smiled: "Really? Then go ahead and try."
Looking at the cold, mocking smile on Charlotte's lips, Alexander suddenly felt he could see through Charlotte less and less. Strangely, he felt a hint of curiosity about her, a desire to explore further.
If this was her way of getting his attention, then she had succeeded.
Seeing Alexander staring at her without speaking for a long time, Charlotte couldn't help raising an eyebrow: "What? Are you thinking up some new trick to use against me?"
Alexander's brow twitched as he quickly snapped back. "Charlotte, if this is your way of getting my attention, then I can tell you—you've succeeded."
Charlotte couldn't help rolling her eyes.
Alexander was really too full of himself, to the point of being unbearable.
Not sure if he was provoked by Charlotte's expression, Alexander suddenly said: "Charlotte, actually, whether to pursue this case or not isn't up to you."
Charlotte froze.
But she quickly understood what he meant.
She was furious: "Alexander, you bastard!"
Unlike Charlotte's anger, Alexander was unusually calm: "I already told you, I'll cover Jenna's medical expenses and compensation until she's satisfied."
Charlotte's hands slowly clenched into fists.
Alexander was too cunning.
He was actually going after Jenna.
And she knew Jenna's character very well.
Jenna would never compromise because of the compensation Alexander mentioned. But if Alexander said that pursuing the case would drag Charlotte down and make her face retaliation from the Wallace Family and the Forbes Family, then Jenna would very likely give in and accept Alexander's compensation.
Sure enough, when Charlotte pushed past Alexander and rushed to Jenna's hospital room, Alexander's assistant had just put a document into his briefcase.
Charlotte froze on the spot.
But when Jenna saw her, she acted like nothing happened and casually patted the edge of the bed: "Charlotte, come sit down."
Charlotte's heart ached: "Jenna—"
Seeing Charlotte still standing there motionless, Jenna grinned again: "Let me tell you some good news—I got rich! A whole million dollars for free!"
"When I get out tomorrow, I'll rent a bigger place right away. Then you and Philip can come stay over."
Watching Jenna force a smile, Charlotte felt a pang in her heart.
She walked over and hugged Jenna: "Jenna, I'm sorry."
But Jenna shot a glare at Alexander's assistant: "Got what you came for? Now leave! And remember to transfer the money right away!"
After Alexander's assistant left, Jenna finally wrinkled her round face and pulled Charlotte to sit down.
"Charlotte, honestly I don't feel wronged at all. But if you're not satisfied, we can just wait a while and find a chance to get back at them."
She scratched her head: "Also, Alexander wasn't completely wrong. The Forbes Family and the Wallace Family are powerful. If they target us, or create problems for your divorce, that would really backfire on us."
Charlotte gave her a look: "You think I'm afraid of them?"
Jenna clung to Charlotte, acting cute and swaying: "Charlotte, you're the best."
She suddenly lowered her voice and blinked mysteriously at Charlotte: "But I had another reason for agreeing to the settlement."
Charlotte hadn't realized Jenna had become so scheming.
But Jenna was already proudly explaining her calculation: "I thought about it over and over, and realized—doesn't Sabrina always use the excuse that she's not feeling well and needs Alexander to take care of her?"
"If Calvin went to jail and couldn't get out for a while, wouldn't that just give Sabrina more chances to cling to Alexander?"
"So I thought it over and decided not to give her that opportunity."
Then Jenna bumped Charlotte, looking for praise: "See? I'm getting smarter and smarter, right?"
Charlotte didn't know whether to laugh or cry: "Yes, you're the smartest."
Jenna lifted her head proudly: "Of course."
After sitting with Jenna for a while and seeing that her injuries weren't serious, Charlotte felt relieved enough to leave, planning to go back and make some nutritious food to bring over.
But unexpectedly, just after leaving the hospital room, she ran into Jordan.
"Your friend's injuries aren't too serious. She should be okay now, right?"
Looking at Jordan in his white coat, Charlotte said: "I haven't thanked you yet for looking after her. Thank you. I'll treat you to dinner sometime."
Jordan's eyes behind his glasses suddenly lit up: "You really mean it?"
Looking at Jordan's still-clear gaze, Charlotte suddenly felt envious: "Really! And we'll bring Lily and Philip."
"Okay."
Charlotte waved at him: "I'll get going then?"
"Okay."
Jordan stood there for a long time without moving, until a colleague walked by and asked curiously: "Dr. Howard, why are you still standing here?"
Jordan came back to his senses and smiled without saying anything.
When Charlotte returned to her apartment, Alexander had already used the settlement agreement to pick Calvin up from the police station.
Sabrina, who had insisted on coming along, was now sitting in the car waiting.
But when she saw Calvin still wearing the clothes that had been splashed with dirty water, she subtly moved away.
Taking advantage of Alexander going to sign papers, Sabrina suddenly breathed a sigh of relief: "Calvin, thank goodness you're okay."
"You don't know how much effort Alexander put into getting this settlement agreement."
"So just bear with it, and stop provoking Charlotte from now on."
Calvin snorted dismissively, though a flash of malice crossed his eyes.
Sabrina could endure it, but he didn't want to.
He was from a prominent family, after all.
Yet today Charlotte had publicly splashed him with dirty water and dragged him to the police station, making him lose all face.
Just now, Patrick had called after hearing the news and given him a harsh scolding!
Then his mother called too, hinting that Patrick was already thinking about handing over all of the Wallace Family business to his illegitimate son.
Calvin panicked.
He'd always been clear about gratitude and grudges.
So he'd repay Sabrina's kindness for a lifetime.
And he'd remember this grudge against Charlotte for a lifetime too!
Didn't Charlotte want a quick divorce so she could marry Jordan and continue living the good life as a wealthy wife?
He just wouldn't let her have it!
Originally, he'd been hoping Alexander would divorce Charlotte quickly and then marry Sabrina.
But now his thinking had suddenly changed!
