Chapter 213

Sophie thought it was normal for them to have a big wedding.

"I'm so pissed off." Emily was really annoyed. "I told you back then, you guys should have had a wedding too. Look at you now, divorced and left with nothing. People really think you were never valued at all."

"It's not necessary." Sophie was much calmer than Emily. "Stop being angry. I’ve moved past it, why can’t you do the same?"

"If I had known", Emily just couldn't accept it. "I wouldn't have married Joshua."

"Don't talk nonsense. You're you, I'm me, we're different." Sophie couldn't bear to see Emily talk like this. "Joshua loves you; Matthew doesn't love me. That's a huge difference right there."

Jane nodded too. "Emily, don't be impulsive. Don't treat marriage like a joke. Do you know how hard it is for a woman to meet a man who's genuinely good to her?"

Seeing them both trying to calm her down, Emily backed off. "I'm just saying. Anyways, if they have dinners or whatever in the future, I'm not going. Even if Victoria is a good person, I can't face her."

"No one's forcing you. Do whatever you want." Sophie understood her friend's feelings and gently put her arm around her. "Don't be angry, Mrs. Chi."

Emily frowned. "Don't call me that."

"Okay, don't be angry."

Sophie coaxed Emily, and Emily couldn't help but laugh.

"Matthew has no taste", Emily pouted. "letting go of a beauty like you..."

"Okay." Sophie stopped her from continuing. "I was the one who wanted the divorce; it's not Matthew's fault. Also, Victoria hasn't done anything to me, don't talk about her."

"Got it."

Matthew reunited with his first love, who had been missing for eight years. Even though she was disabled in both legs, Matthew still wanted to marry her - such deep devotion became a celebration of beautiful love story among the wealthy families.

Of course, some people brought up Sophie, dismissing her as a cannon fodder worthless in the face of true love.

When Sophie heard about the story, she suddenly felt a bit pathetic.

People at the company had also heard about it, and many came to comfort Sophie. Even her boss came to check on her after a meeting.

Sophie didn't know whether to laugh or cry. She joked, "The company better not fire me just because Matthew and I got divorced."

"How could that be? Mr. Moore didn't say anything."

"What I mean is, you're an important employee of the company. We wouldn't fire you over something like this."

Sophie didn't dwell on it anymore.

Even if she really got fired because of Matthew, she'd accept it.

Jane was leaving, and Sophie took her to the airport.

"I'm a bit worried Ted will come looking for you." Sophie felt Ted definitely wouldn't let it go.

"It's fine." Jane was clear-headed. "It’s over between us. If he’s looking for me, it isn’t out of love, he’s just not bored of the game yet.."

Sophie stepped forward and hugged her gently. "Take care of yourself."

"You too."

After seeing Jane off, As she watched the travelers pass by, amid the crowd, she felt like a deserted island with no one heading her way.

"Sophie."

Sophie turned around at the voice. Victoria was in a wheelchair with Matthew standing behind her.

Victoria looked better than when they first met - her skin was delicate and fair, her features more defined.

She was beautiful, no wonder Matthew liked her.

"What a coincidence! Are you seeing someone off or picking someone up?" Sophie asked.

"Nancy's going on a business trip for a while, so I came to see her off." Victoria asked her, "What about you?"

"I'm also came to see a friend off."

Victoria asked again, "Did you drive? Want to ride together?"

Sophie shook her head. "No need, it's out of your route."

She didn't want to see Matthew.

Besides, they were already talking about marriage. If someone saw her, an ex-wife, in the same car with them, who knows what kind of gossip it would start.

She didn't want to be the main character in other people's gossip anymore.

Victoria looked back at Matthew, seeming to want Matthew to ask Sophie to stay.

Matthew's gaze was cold.

"Okay then, we'll go first." Victoria didn't insist.

"Okay."

Sophie watched them walk away one after the other, then she hailed a taxi on the street.

There was some traffic now. By coincidence, the car next to hers was Matthew's.

Victoria sat in the passenger seat with the window down, talking to Matthew, and Matthew was responding to her.

Sophie looked away.

Victoria was a lucky girl. Missing for so many years, already considered dead by friends and family, yet she came back.

The people who loved her still loved her. The people in her world hadn't changed.

Sophie was even a bit envious of her.

This stretch of road was very congested, stop-and-go. Sophie was feeling a bit uncomfortable.

She had drunk quite a bit with Jane last night, and now the traffic was making her dizzy, her stomach uncomfortable, constantly nauseous.

Just then, she started breaking out in cold sweat.

Finally past the most congested section, the driver was in a hurry too, driving fast, changing lanes quickly. Several times Sophie wanted to remind the driver to slow down.

She was dizzy, wanted to throw up, and was afraid of an accident.

Sophie was thrown against the front seat. Her stomach was churning, cold sweat on her forehead like she'd washed her face.

The driver got out to argue with the driver he'd hit, and traffic backed up again behind them.

Sophie really couldn't take it anymore. She pushed open the car door, walked to the median strip in front, squatted down, and started throwing up.

This bout of vomiting left her back completely soaked. Her body felt like it was immersed in cold water, very uncomfortable.

She didn't dare lift her head or stand up, afraid of passing out.

She kept squatting, adjusting her breathing. Her head was a bit hot, her stomach cramping. She clutched her stomach, her hand gripping a tree trunk in the median strip.

She didn't know that a car had pulled over with its hazard lights on.

"Sophie!"

Sophie heard the voice and turned her head with difficulty.

Victoria was leaning out of the car window, looking at her with concern.

Matthew had already gotten out of the car and was walking toward her.

He bent down, blocking Sophie's view, his face magnified before her eyes.

Sophie thought about how they had started at about the same time, and the taxi had been stopped for so long before they caught up - their speed was really slow.

Matthew's eyes showed disgust. "Can you walk?"

Sophie shook her head in response.

Matthew grabbed her hand and pulled her up.

As soon as she stood up, the sun hit her, and Sophie felt dizzy and couldn't see clearly.

She didn't dare faint. She gripped Matthew's arm hard to steady herself.

"Matthew, water." Victoria handed a bottle of water through the window.

Matthew took it, opened the cap, and held it to Sophie's lips.

Sophie took it herself, drank a mouthful, rinsed her mouth, and spat it out to the side.

She drank another mouthful and swallowed it, finally feeling a bit better.

Matthew helped her to the car, opened the back door, and let her sit inside.

"My bag is still in the cab." Sophie looked back at the taxi.

Matthew went back to get her bag.
