Chapter 9

Chapter 9
Elizabeth's POV

I stared at him warily.

Thankfully, he didn't come closer.

He scanned the room, his tone flat, "From today on, this is your home. You stay put until the baby in your belly is big enough for a paternity test."

In the end, it was all about the child.

"The baby in my belly is Alexander's child," I immediately shot back. Out of survival instinct, I had to make him understand I wasn't someone to mess with. "If you dare touch me, Alexander will never let you get away with it."

Since this man's last name was Windsor and he was using these methods against me, he was likely some relative of the Windsor family trying to use me to get to Alexander. As long as he was part of the Windsor family, he couldn't possibly not fear Alexander. Using him as a shield was definitely the right move.

However, he just gave me a casual glance. I couldn't read the emotion in his eyes, but the mockery in his tone was crystal clear, "You sound like you know Alexander pretty well?"

"That's none of your business. You just need to know the consequences of messing with me." I stuck my neck out like a frightened hedgehog raising all its quills.

Looking at me, he suddenly laughed.

I froze, nervously swallowed, and mustered the courage to ask, "Who exactly are you?"

He was quite straightforward, "Alex."

"Have you heard my name?"

I immediately shook my head. "No."

"Didn't you say you know Alexander well?" He pressed. "Yet you've never even heard my name?"

I was instantly stumped.

Alex and Alexander were so similar. As for whether the Windsor family actually had such a person, I had no way of knowing, because I wasn't familiar with Alexander at all.

But I absolutely couldn't say that out loud, or Alex would see right through me—that Alexander and I didn't know each other at all.

So I could only bite the bullet and say, "I'm the kind of woman who has that sort of relationship with Alexander. Do you think I need to be interested in you?"

I didn't know if it was my imagination, but I felt a flash of complex emotion in his eyes. Those deep eyes just stared at me, making me increasingly uncomfortable.

I decided to change tactics, testing the waters, "Thank you for saving me. How about this—you let me go, and I can put in a good word for you with Alexander. After all, you did save his child. He'll be grateful."

After speaking, I tentatively tried to walk toward the door, but a cold gaze shot over, and I immediately stopped in my tracks.

From the moment I woke up until now, I hadn't been able to leave this room even once. If I wanted to escape, I'd at least need to get familiar with the layout first. Acting blindly like this would only back me into a corner.

"Stay put." There seemed to be a hint of helplessness in his voice. He called toward the door, "Come in."

Lisa and a young girl dressed in the same uniform walked in, both with their heads lowered, not daring to look at him.

They walked over to the side and stood properly, saying in unison, "Mr. Windsor."

Alex looked at them and ordered, "From now on, you two are not to leave her side for even a moment."

"Yes!"

I was absolutely speechless.

Wasn't this just assigning people to watch me? Not leave for even a moment? Did that mean they'd have to stand by my bed while I slept too?

"I don't want this." I don't know where I found the courage, but I refused directly. "This is imprisonment! I don't want to stay here. Let me go!"

Lisa looked up at me in panic, quietly shaking her head, trying to get me to stop talking.

But I completely ignored her hint and even took a step closer to Alex, my face showing stubborn defiance, "If you dare keep me locked up, I'll definitely make you pay for it."

A sharp intake of breath came from the air, as if I'd said something utterly outrageous.

"Make me pay for it?" Alex's expression changed. The impatience from before disappeared, replaced by a look of interest, as if he was ready to have a proper chat with me. "Tell me, how are you going to make me pay?"

I straightened my back, about to speak, when Alex cut in first, "Let me guess—who are you planning to tell? Alexander?"

That sharp intake of breath sounded again. My face burned hot, and I couldn't get a single word out.

What was all this about?

"Stay put." He dropped that line and turned to leave.

The moment the door closed, all my strength and appetite vanished.

Lisa quickly came over, quietly advising me, "Ms. Spencer, how could you be so impulsive! Mr. Windsor has a very bad temper. What if he really gets angry?"

The new chimed in, "That's right. Mr. Windsor rarely has patience with anyone. You'd better not act like you just did again."

"Then why does he get to lock me up here?" I felt both wronged and confused.

Most importantly, I couldn't figure out his purpose at all.

I'd only met this man named Alex twice in total. Even if it was about the baby in my belly, he shouldn't have this kind of attitude, right?

"Ms. Spencer, just rest easy here and take care of your health. The doctor said your body is too weak and you must recuperate properly."

"Right, my name is Anna. Starting today, I'll be taking care of you along with Lisa."

They stood beside me, their eyes full of sincerity, not looking like bad people. In this unfamiliar place, they seemed to be the only people I could rely on. I sighed—I'd just have to make do for now.

If I could build a good relationship with them, maybe later I'd have a chance to convince them to help me leave. After all, rich people like the Windsor family must be busy with their careers. This Alex, whoever he was, had to go to work—he couldn't possibly watch me twenty-four hours a day.

"Ms. Spencer, you ate too little. Please eat a bit more. The doctor said you need to supplement with lots of nutrients right now." Lisa handed me the utensils again.

Anna added, "Mr. Windsor specially hired a nutritionist to plan your three meals."

I paused. "A nutritionist?"

Prepared for me?

"Yes, Mr. Windsor may seem cold, but he's actually very thoughtful." Anna added.

My feelings were all mixed up.

This was too strange.

He locked me up here, but not to hurt me. He got a doctor, arranged a nutritionist—it looked like he wanted to nurse me back to health.

One thing was certain, all of this was because of the baby in my belly.

A relative of the Windsor family, caring so much about Alexander's child.

This looked like someone wanting to use this child to threaten Alexander. After all, Alexander was so young yet already in that position—the dangers he faced must be far more than I imagined. Maybe many of the troubles he usually encountered were caused by people on the inside.

I was lost in thought, completely unaware that the door had been pushed open again.

The man's dark eyes landed on my face, and his brows immediately furrowed.
