(Devan's POV).
It'd been a week since my last meeting with Vivian, and she never returned to the hospital. I don't know if it was because she meant what she said or if she deliberately didn't see me to make me believe that she didn't like me.
But it was frustrating. I was sick and I couldn't do much with my injured hand. I missed her and I wanted to see her.
I was always trying to reach her. I either sent her a message or called her, but none of them were responded to.
I hated the feeling of longing that I couldn't cure.
So, I thought of a way for me to meet her. More precisely, for her to come to see me,
I told my driver to go to Adam's school and picked him up when he got home. I knew what I was doing would upset Vivian or, worse, anger me. But I could only think of this way that I could see Vivian again. Because there was no other reason for me to see her.
"Dev!!!"
My eyes widened, perfectly when I saw Adam running towards me with his eyes sparkling and a smile on his lips. I crouched down so I could give him a warm hug.
"Hello, Kiddo. How are you?" I asked as I stroked his chubby hair and cheeks.
"I'm fine," he said, looking down at my injured hand, "Dev, mom said you were sick. Have you recovered?" he asked. His eyes dimmed as if he was sad to see my casted hand.
"Ah, just a small accident. My hand will heal soon. Don't worry," I said as I rubbed his face. Trying to calm him down.
"You'll be able to use your hand again, right?" his hand reached out to touch my casted hand but he stopped himself out of fear.
I chuckled. "Of course. It's just a minor injury. The doctor said the cast would come off after a few weeks. And after that, I can use my hand again. In the meantime, my hand will have to rest completely."
"Really? I'm glad to hear that. Because I want to play with you again, Dev," he said.
"Of course. I also want to play with you again," I said, "have you missed me the last few days?"
"Yes!" he nodded. "I asked Mom to bring me to see you, but she said you needed to rest a lot because you were sick."
"What your mom said is true. But since I'm doing better now, I came to see you. Are you happy?"
"Yes, I'm happy!" he exclaimed enthusiastically. "Dev, did you bring the gift you promised me?"
"Mm, in the car."
"Really?"
"Men never break their promises. You should remember that," I said as I took his hand and led him toward the car. "Do you want to get some ice cream before we go home?"
"Yes, I want to!"
I smiled. It felt so good just to see a smile on Adam's face. I wanted to always be by his side and spoil him like he was my son. For some reason, from the first time I saw him, I immediately loved him and wanted to be close to him.
Not only did he remind me of myself as a child, but he was also so adorable.
We bought ice cream and ate it on the spot. Adam was very happy when I bought him a new toy. And I was quite satisfied that he liked the gift I bought him. I bought it with Aiden and asked his opinion since it was my first time buying a toy for a child.
I wish I could meet Adam and play with him without thinking about anything. Moreover, I could be with Vivian and make her mine forever.
"Dev," he called.
"Hm?" I asked. "Do you want to eat?"
He shook his head. "Do you live here alone?"
"Oh, Mm. Why?"
"You must be very lonely," he said, "don't you have a mom and dad?"
I chuckled. "Of course I do. They live together with my younger brother. Since I've grown up, I've lived alone."
Suddenly his face turned sad. He looked down and played with the toy cars in his hands with a lackluster motion.
"Adam, why? What's wrong?" I asked, running my fingers through his hair.
"Because I don't have a father. Mom is always working and often comes home at night. So I'm home alone and have no friends."
I was surprised when he looked at me with his eyes already glazed over. I quickly grabbed his body and hugged him.
"There's me," I whispered as I patted his back.
Damn.
It's the first time I've ever seen a child sad, but somehow my chest also feels tight when I see Adam crying.
"You can call me anytime you want and I'll come straight over to play with you," I told him. I looked at him. "Adam, you can call me Daddy if you want."
"Daddy?"
"Yes. I'd be very happy if you thought of me as your father." I wiped away Adam's tears with my fingers. He was so cute, but it was also sad when he cried like that.
"But, mom would be mad..."
"Why?"
"Mom says you're just a stranger. So I shouldn't get close to you."
My hands clenched into fists. I didn't know what to say to Adam. It pissed me off even more that she had to say something like that to Adam. I thought it was just between us, but I realized that Vivian didn't like seeing me close to her son either.
