Chapter 25: Silent Promises

Chapter: Silent Promises

I was sitting on the edge of the bed, my hands resting lightly on my stomach, still trembling from the events that had just unfolded. My heart was pounding so hard I thought it might burst from my chest. I could feel the residual fear crawling through my body like icy fingers. Calyra’s tea, the poison, the panic—it was all too much. And yet… I survived. My child survived. Somehow, I had made it.

The door opened quietly, and I froze. My stomach flipped. My eyes instinctively went to the figure standing in the doorway. Ronan. My Alpha. My protector. The man whose presence alone could make the room feel both suffocating and safe at the same time.

He stepped inside quietly, his eyes scanning me immediately. For a moment, I thought he would be angry—not at me, but at everything, at Calyra, at the world for daring to touch me. Instead, his eyes softened, and I could see the mixture of relief, concern, and… something else I wasn’t ready to name.

“I’m sorry,” he said, his voice low, firm, carrying a weight I had never heard directed at me before. “I am sorry for letting you get hurt.”

I tried to meet his gaze, tried to find the right words, but my voice failed me. Finally, I whispered, trembling, “It’s… it’s fine.”

“No,” he said gently, kneeling beside me on the edge of the bed. His hand brushed my arm, a light touch that sent shivers down my spine. “She poisoned you. I know I should punish her… I should do worse, make her regret it… but I… I am sorry. She’s… she’s…” His voice faltered, unusual for him. I could feel the tension in his chest, the frustration, the anger, the helplessness all mingling together.

I looked down at my hands, at the small curve of my belly that I still could hardly believe was real. I wanted to tell him it didn’t matter, that it was okay, that I survived, that my child survived. So I said softly, almost whispering, “It’s fine.”

His eyes searched mine, a storm of emotions behind them, and he took a slow, steadying breath. “From now on,” he said, his voice unwavering, “I will protect you. I know you didn’t ask for any of this. None of it is your fault. You didn’t ask to be in this position, and I—” He stopped, ran a hand through his hair, and then reached out, letting his fingers brush over my shoulder. The warmth of his touch grounded me, made me feel almost… safe.

I wasn’t ready to listen anymore. My mind felt tired, my body weak, my emotions raw. I wanted to say something, but instead I stayed silent. Finally, after a long pause, I found my voice. “Promise me one thing,” I said, my voice shaking.

Ronan’s gaze softened, and he leaned closer, his hand brushing my hair gently. “What is it?” he asked.

I took a deep breath, my fingers nervously fidgeting with the hem of my dress. “Don’t let anyone,” I said slowly, my voice barely audible, “especially Calyra… or anyone close to her… don’t let them know that my pregnancy… that it’s still stable.”

Ronan’s eyebrows furrowed slightly, and he tilted his head. “What about your stomach?” he asked, concern flooding his voice. “It’s still big. You’re still in danger. I—”

I quickly interrupted him, forcing a small, tired smile that I knew didn’t reach my eyes. Even after a miscarriage… it wouldn’t go down immediately… just play along with me. “It’s okay,” I said softly. “Please… just promise.”

He looked at me for a long moment, his sharp eyes searching mine as if weighing the weight of my words. Then he nodded slowly, a solemn promise in his expression. “I promise,” he said quietly, his voice carrying the strength and conviction that only he could have.

For a moment, we just sat there. I could feel the pounding of my heart in my chest, the lingering fear, the uncertainty. But at the same time, a strange comfort settled over me. I knew I was still trapped in a dangerous world, but with him here, promising me this… maybe I could breathe again.

He motioned gently, and I felt his hands guiding me backward onto the bed. I lay down slowly, still trembling, still wary. His hands were on my shoulders, then moving carefully, methodically, massaging the tension from my muscles. His touch was firm but gentle, skilled, comforting in a way that made my chest ache.

“Relax,” he said quietly, his voice a soft rumble that seemed to wrap around me like a blanket. “Let me help you. Let me take care of you.”

I tried to respond, tried to speak, but my voice caught in my throat. I closed my eyes, letting him guide my body into ease. Every stroke, every press of his hands seemed to soothe not just my muscles, but my fear, my panic, my exhaustion.

I thought about the poison, about Calyra, about the danger still lurking in every shadow of this house. I thought about my child, tiny and fragile inside me, and I felt both fear and fierce protectiveness rise up in my chest. But with his hands on me, with his promise ringing in my ears, I allowed myself to relax, to let a small thread of trust in.

Hours seemed to stretch and bend. I felt my body slowly unwind, my tears drying on their own, the panic and adrenaline seeping away. The room was quiet, except for the soft sound of my breathing and the rhythmic press of his hands on my back.

Eventually, my body surrendered to exhaustion. My eyelids grew heavy, my mind swimming in a haze of relief, fear, and something else I couldn’t name. And as I drifted into sleep, I felt his hands linger, holding, massaging, protecting… a silent promise that even if the world turned against me, he would be there.

Even if Calyra came, even if the pack whispered, even if danger waited… he would protect me. And for the first time since I arrived in this house, I allowed myself to believe it.

I fell asleep with my hands over my belly, my heart heavy but comforted, my body finally at rest, knowing that at least for tonight, I was safe.
