Chapter 11: 11
DAISY
The coffeeshop grew quieter and less rowdy as the customers started leaving. I heaved in relief, stretching my tired body and aching legs. It's been a hell of a long day.
Yes, this was the coffeeshop Suzy promised to put in good words for me, and yes, I got the job! I'm so elated. I mean, after I almost bursted a coffeemaker and spilled more drinks than one on the floor, they still hired me. But I wasn't allowed behind the counter. I was never gonna be a barista. All I'm allowed to do is take orders from the customers, and that was more than enough for me.
Anything, anything at all was better than being in the mansion all day and getting my mind messed up by the most-twisted Alpha there'll ever be.
I was deadbeat at the moment, but I wasn't complaining. I love my new job and the aura of sophistication it brought with it. Also, it gave me this feeling of significance. I could be crazy, but that's how it felt to me.
I'd just cleared up the table of the customers that just left when Suzy signaled me. She was behind the counter, with few other workers.
I hurried to her and she bent slightly in a whisper, “How you holding up on your first day?“
I smiled and nodded enthusiastically. “I'm thrilled. I love it here,“
“What?“ Another voice interrupted. It was the worker next to Suzy. She was a human, of course. An oversized human. “Girl, get your head out of the clouds. There's nothing nice about this job. It's stressful and hellish. I wish I didn't have to work here,“ She said in a whiny tone.
“But - but I love it. I do...” I couldn't say anymore than I already did. How do I explain to her that back in our pack, there wasn't this much sophistication and this was my first time experiencing something refreshingly different? She's a human. She'll never understand.
“Saying you love this shop is social -suicide. What are you, dense?“
”That's your opinion, Mia. Don't push it down to others. If she loves her new job, then that's how it is. Period.“ Suzy said, her gaze darting to the Mia-girl and back to me.
“Whatever. You both are weirdos,“ Mia mumbled, and scoffed at us before leaving. I watched her disappear through the backdoor.
“Don't let her get to you, Diasy. If you love your new job, then there's nothing wrong with that. Okay?“ Suzy beamed, rubbing my hand warmly.
I rubbed hers back with a smile. “Wbat about you? Don't you love it here?“
She heaved, working a few wonders on the coffeemaker in front of her.
“Well, I've had my best days. I've had my worst too. But I can't say I hate it here. It keeps me away from the mansion and that's a blessing.“
I nodded. It was just a casual talk but to me, it was one of those few times Suzy hinted on her frustration. You could tell from the exhaustion in her vocie that she was having a hard time. That shit got me a little sad. If I knew how to comfort her as much as she comforts me, then I would be the happiest Omega ever. But it's hard to comfort someone who doesn't let you in on their pains.
“Hey, new girl. Go take orders from table 8!“ A voice spurred me into action.
I waved at Suzy and hurried over to the table. The customers seated around the table were a clique of teenagers. It wasn't the first time I saw teenagers in the shop. Matter of fact, our customers were majorly teenagers. But there was something different about this clique. They had an intimidating aura around them. Just like the four horsemen. But these were human teenagers, I'm sure. And they were females, all three of them.
“Can I take your orders?“ My voice was calm and soothing, as I took out my notepad and a pen.
The one in the middle gave me a thorough scrutiny with her eyes. I could see the disdain in her stares and it made me feel more inferior than usual. I couldn't look them in the eyes, and just stared at my notepad instead.
It took a while before they finally placed their orders. I skedaddled right after, still unable to meet their eyes.
Half an hour later, I was done taking orders. It was 8pm already and we should be checking off work. I was just leaning against the counter, watching Suzy make her calculations.
We'll be leaving right after that.
”Hey, clumsy!“ A male voice yelled out.
“It's Daisy, knucklehead!“ Suzy fired back at him. He was a coworker and a teenager like us.
“Whatever. Take this espresso to the only table that has customers. That isn't too much of a feat for you, is it?“
”It is, Mike.“ Suzy turned to him, with her hands in akimbo. She had a scowl on her face that showed how pissed she was. “It isn't part of her job. It's yours,“
“So I can't give orders to the new girl? C'mon, that makes you an hypocrite, because if I can remember, you order newbies around too. Why acting like a saint now?“
“This is different. You just can't ask her to carry an espresso.“
“Why? 'cause she's too clumsy?“
“Say the word 'clumsy' again and I'll knock your teeth off, swine!“
”Suzy, that's enough, please,“ I pulled her by the arm. It was starting to get loud and attracting a few attention. If I heard the manager vividly when he was briefing me about my job, he did say 'no fighting'. It had a penalty and I'll hate myself if Suzy gets punished for standing up for me.
“I'll take the espresso,“ I said, in my attempt to put an end to the bickering.
“What?!“ Suzy turned to me. “Are you nuts? You can't take it. Remember what happened to all the drinks you touched today?!“
“Oh, there it is. You finally admit she's clumsy,“ Mile snickered.
“Fuck off!“ Suzy hissed at him. Her gaze was back at me and she was now whispering. “If you spill that drink, you might get punished. Don't do it, girl. Just let me handle this jerk,“
“And let you get punished? No, Suzy. I can't do that to you. You've already been unfortunate enough because of me. I'm not adding this to it. Just once, let me handle it. Please,“
She was quiet but her face cringed so bad I feared she might drop a tear or two. She feared for what my fate would be if I carried it.
“I'll be fine,“ I assured her with a weak smile. I couldn't attempt a brighter smile. My heart was thumping hard against my chest and it was crushing my smiles. I didn't wanna show how nervous I was, but when I got handed the espresso, I gasped and almost dropped it.
“Easy, Daisy,“ Suzy cautioned. “A step at a time.“
“Okay,“ I nodded. I didn't spare her a glance. I didn't wanna take my eyes off the espresso. What if it slips from my hand?
I held it so tightly as I walked over to the table. I heard Mike's bustling laughter and it made me more nervous. I tried to increase my strides and smiled when I saw that I was getting closer to the table.
My heartbeat steadied and I was already proud of myself for achieving this. I was few inches to the table, ready to call it a win. But then, I felt a strong push at my back and I lost my bearings. The espresso spilled and I shut my eyes at the mess I just made.
An unending shriek got me fluttering my eyes open. The figure was just standing in front of me, covered in espresso. Oh My God, I hadn't spilled it on the floor. I'd spilled it on a person!
“What the fuck?!“ She yelled, wiping at her face to get off a bit of the liquid. “Look what you did to me, blind cunt!“
“I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm really sorry. I didn't know. I didn't see you there–“ I reached out to help wipe off the liquid but she slapped my hand off. I was already whimpering.
“Of course, you didn't. My God!“ She gasped, looking down at her ruined outfit. “You just ruined my favorite dress. Do you know how much this costs?!“
“I'm sorry, please…” I was already getting on my knees, but she pulled me up roughly, and flattened a side of my face with a hard slap.
“There, that's what we do to blind people!“ She shouted. Pointing a finger at me, she began venomously, “You gonna rot in hell for this, I assure you that.“
I held the part of my face that stung like hell and just cried my heart out. I couldn't believe it ended like this. I had this under control. The espresso wouldn't have spilled if not for the push at my back.
“What are you doing here?“ I finally heard a familiar voice and I wouldn't say it made me feel any better about the situation. He was coming to stand beside the girl I'd ruined her outfit. And it wasn't just him, it was all three of them. Again, Logan was missing.
“And why do you have that outfit in you?“ Drake asked bewildered, taking in my working outfit.
“How are you here, causing problems again? You should be back at the mansion,“ Jake said again. He had his hand around the girl's shoulders in a soothing manner.
“Is Logan here?” Charles finally asked. His stare was intent, as always.
”No, It's just me,“ I tried to sound a bit casual. If I included the formalities, the human-girl might quiz them about it. That should also be the reason they addressed me by my name for the first time, instead of 'slave' or the numerous ugly names they call me.
“You work here?“ Drake asked.
“Yes, I'm new,“
“You have to be. I've never seen your clumsy self around here. Why would they hire someone as dumb as you?“ The girl fired back, charging towards me again. But then, the guys pulled her back.
“Chill, Victoria. You don't wanna pull her hairs in public. That'll be degrading,“ Jake cautioned.
“How the hell do you guys know this piece of shit?“ she asked through clenched teeth.
“She works for us.“ Charles replied. “C'mon guys, let's get out of here. See you at home, Diasy.“
They brushed past me and I saw the three girls I'd taken their orders earlier leave with them. It was no surprise they hung out together. They did seem alike.
My heart sank at whatever awaited me at home. Just then, Suzy came to give me a hug.
“Thank you for not butting in.“ I sobbed, crying on her shoulder. If she had come for the save, then my blood oath in the school roof would be broken. Logan would kill her.
“I felt like dying watching you guys and not being able to do anything. I'm sorry, Daisy,“ she sobbed back.
I didn't say any more words and just took the solace she offered. In a few minutes, I'll be back at the mansion and dealing with my monsters.
