Chapter 67 The Letter
Liam’s POV
“Congratulations man, you are getting married,” Josh said as I walked up to him.
“Thanks,” I said.
“Is there still no lead about Reginald’s wife’s sister?”
“I got the information from Scott, he said that he had finally found someone who knew her and he gave him her address but when he got there, the place was deserted. Some of her belongings were there but it didn’t look like she had come home for days.”
“That’s interesting, I wonder if she’s in hiding or something happened to her?”
This was another dead end. Finding anything about Lady Grey was getting harder.
Josh left and I went back to work. It was the only thing that was helping me not to go crazy.
I sat behind my desk and went through the report I had gotten.
It was about the patrol rotations and what had happened yesterday night.
It seemed like everything was fine. But that was the problem.
It felt too peaceful, like something was wrong.
I could feel it at the back of my mind.
Something was coming.
I thought of Elena and how she looked surprised when I told her that the wedding was in two weeks.
I wanted to tell her about why we were really moving so quickly but I didn’t want her to worry.
She was already dealing with enough that I knew she wasn’t telling me.
“Alpha,” one of the guards said from the doorway.
“Yes?” I didn’t look up.
“There’s a letter for you.”
I looked up immediately. “What letter? Who sent it?
“We don't know, only found it at my door.”
I reached out, taking the envelope.
My jaw tightened as I saw what was written on the stamp.
LG.
Lady Grey.
I dismissed the guard with a nod and waited until the door closed before breaking the seal.
I opened the letter.
Hello again Liam, it's been far too long since I caused you a little bit of trouble. I hear that you are about to wed my prize and I wanted to send my congratulations but I think it's sad that you think you could protect her from me just by marrying her. I won't wait too long, my prize is already awakening.
I will let you have your fun and keep up this little game. But when I'm ready you won't know what hit you.
Your favorite person.
Lady Grey.
This woman is toying with us. Connor roared.
I could feel my anger growing.
How the hell did she get this letter to my pack without anyone knowing.
Fuck!
She could have easily gotten to Elena.
I leaned back in my chair, taking deep breaths and trying to calm down.
My fingers curled into a fist as I put it on the desk.
Awakening.
The word echoed in my mind, dragging with it memories, I was sure I had heard something like that before but where.
“Elena,” I muttered.
Connor stirred uneasily, pacing beneath my skin.
Lady Grey did not deal in exaggeration.
She was coming and I needed to be prepared when she did.
I stood, moving to the window.
From here, I could see the inner courtyard, warriors training below, their movements sharp and precise.
Everything looked normal. Too normal.
I pressed my hand on the glass.
I had rushed the wedding for a reason, even if I hadn’t said it out loud. Bonds strengthened protection. Titles carried weight.
With Elena as my wife and luna, no one would dare touch her.
But Lady Grey didn't follow those rules.
Bigger than tradition.
This was about survival.
I returned to my desk and pulled out another report, forcing myself to read it.
Rogue activity along the northern border. Increased movement near old territory lines.
Nothing too serious, nothing I could act on without alarming the council.
Yet.
I heard a knock on the door.
“Enter.”
Josh stepped in. “You’ve got that look.”
“What look?” I asked flatly.
“The one that something bad has happened.”
I didn’t bother denying it. “Lady Grey sent a message.”
His posture stiffened immediately. He crossed his arms. “What did she say?”
“That's she coming soon and she wants Elena and she gave us a fucking congratulations on the wedding. She is not going to stop until she has her.” I said.
Josh paused then said. “So she knows.”
“She’s always known,” I said. “The question is who else is betraying the pack.”
Silence stretched between us.
“We should increase patrols,” he said finally. “Quietly. No announcements.”
“Already planned,” I replied. “I want double guards near Elena at all times but she can’t feel caged. No obvious shifts.”
Josh nodded. “And the council?”
“They don’t need to know everything yet.” I paused. “If the news spreads, it will create lots of problems for us.”
He studied me for a moment. “You’re scared.”
I didn’t deny it. “I won’t pretend otherwise.”
Josh sighed, softer now. “You’re doing everything you can.”
“It won’t be enough if I don’t stay ahead of this,” I said. “I won’t let her walk into a storm blind. Lady Grey can't have her.”
Josh turned to leave, then hesitated. “For what it’s worth… she’s stronger than you think.”
“I know,” I said quietly. “That’s what scares me.”
After he left, I sat back down, staring at the folded message on my desk.
Lady Grey’s words lingered like a warning bell in my head.
I thought of Elena’s glow that night in the garden. Of the way the air had felt charged, alive. Of how ancient power had brushed against my senses, unfamiliar and unmistakable.
I had sworn to protect her. As my mate. As my future Luna.
As something far more dangerous than the world realized.
My fingers tightened around the edge of the desk.
Whatever was coming for her would have to come through me first.
And I had no intention of losing.
