Chapter 69 Aiden's Role
Chapter 69 Aiden's Role
"Have you thought of a name for them?" Gina asked, pulling my attention away from my thoughts. I looked toward her direction, setting my spoon down on the silver tray.
"I haven't come up with a name yet," I told her softly.
Gina looked away from me and turned back to the cribs. "Awn, they are so cute," she mumbled, reaching out to touch their blanket. "I think you should ask Aiden for ideas. He is usually the one who gives most newly born pups in the pack their names. And the way he does it is amazing."
I smiled, taking another small sip of the warm soup, but the curiosity that had been lingering in my mind about Aiden came rushing back.
"Gina, is Aiden an Alpha of this pack?" I asked, looking up at her face.
Gina looked away from the pups with a smile. "No, he is not. Aiden is not an Alpha. He is more like a Lycan king. He rules the pack, so that is why this pack does not have a regular Alpha."
"A Lycan," I mumbled under my breath.
All at once, everything started to make total sense to me. The heavy power in his walk, the way he spoke, and how he was busy in the woods setting traps for rogues. How did I not think of that before?
"I thought all Lycans were killed in the war that happened years ago," I said, my brow pulling together as I tried to remember the old pack stories.
"Yes, but Aiden is the only surviving Lycan, and he built this pack from scratch," Gina said, walking over to sit on the edge of the bed right next to me. "That is why he is gifted with such great power."
"Wow," I mumbled, staring down at the bowl of soup with my fingers still wrapped around the metal spoon. "It makes sense to me now."
Gina smiled warmly. "Yes, and that is why he does not have a mate yet. No woman in this pack has managed to get his interest until you came along."
I shook my head quickly, looking back at her. "You got it wrong, Gina. There is nothing going on between Aiden and me. He just helped me when I was lost in the woods..."
"Took you to the pack hospital, ensured your pups were born safely while you were alive, even when the chances were slim," Gina finished for me, her voice calm and sure.
I opened my mouth to say something to defend myself, but she cut me off before I could speak.
"Brought you straight to his mansion, and not only that, looks at you like you are the only one that matters in the world."
I shook my head again, my cheeks feeling slightly warm. I knew Aiden and I had a strange connection that had made me mistake him for my mate several times back when I didn't know Warren was my real mate. Hearing everything Gina was saying made my head spin, and I didn't know what thoughts to hold onto anymore.
"Gina, Aiden has been there for me ever since he saw me in the woods, but that does not mean we share some sort of bond," I told her, my voice sounding faint, almost like I was trying hard to lie to myself.
Gina let out a quiet sigh and stood up from the mattress, brushing her hands against her colorful dress. "You're right, maybe I am overthinking things. And so is grandma Bruna. But we know when we see a real connection. You and Aiden are likely fated." She walked over to the crib once more, staring down at my twins with a faint smile. "You should talk to Aiden about names for your pups. I am sure he will like helping you."
"Thank you, Gina," I said softly.
She gave me a gentle smile and was about to say something else when a female voice called her name loudly from the hallway outside.
"I have to go now," she said, touching each of my pups' cheeks gently before she turned and left the room.
Once the door closed behind her, I sat in the quiet room for a long time, thinking about everything Gina had just told me. Aiden being a powerful Lycan, and the undeniable pull I felt whenever he was standing close to me, was a lot to carry. I didn't know what to think.
My mind drifted back to Alpha Warren. I knew he was out there somewhere in the woods looking for me, probably worried sick about where I had vanished to. But even if I were to come face to face with him again, I didn't even know if wanting him back was something I truly wanted anymore. Not when Layla was still living in his house, standing by his side as his Luna. The painful memory of seeing them together in his office still burned deep inside my chest.
I finished off the bowl of soup, feeling some of my strength return to my body. I spent some quiet time leaning over the cribs, smiling at my sweet pups as they slept peacefully.
When I was done, I decided to take the empty plates down to the kitchen myself so I could thank the cooks in person. I picked up the tray, stepped out of my room, and walked down the long, quiet hallway.
As I turned a wide corner near the big stairs, searching for the kitchen entrance, I bumped right into grandma Bruna.
"Oh, Diana!" she said in a friendly voice, stopping right in front of me. "What are you doing carrying those dirty dishes?"
"I was just looking for the kitchen," I said, holding the tray carefully. "I wanted to drop the plates off and thank the cook for the meal."
Grandma Bruna gave a soft chuckle, shaking her head. "You don't need to drop the plates yourself, child. The housekeeper will do that. That is their job here."
"I just wanted to help," I told her with a small smile. "And thank everyone for being so nice to me."
Grandma Bruna reached out and patted my arm softly. "That is fine, my dear. But as long as you are staying in this mansion, you are part of royalty. You are meant to be served here."
I smiled at her kindness, feeling a warm comfort in her words.
As we were still standing there talking in the hallway, footsteps echoed behind us. I turned around and saw Aiden walking up the hall toward us.
He stopped right in front of us, his gaze falling directly on my face.
"Diana," Aiden said, his deep voice cutting through the quiet space. "I need to talk to you."
Grandma Bruna looked between the two of us, a small smile pulling at the corners of her lips. She stepped back and gave me a knowing gesture with her eyes, a small, silent look that made my heart jump, even though I didn't fully understand what she meant by it.
"I will leave you two to talk then," grandma Bruna said cheerfully, turning around and
walking away down the hall, leaving Aiden and me standing alone together.
