Chapter 37: The aftermath of uncontracted intimacy
Angel was eating slowly, and Sin was silently sipping away at his cup of tea. He still didn't eat the toast, but sometimes when I turned to him, he was looking at it, an unreadable expression in his eyes.
And why was I looking at him exactly? Honestly, because I needed to. No matter how much I tried to turn away, I found myself slowly turning to him, as if my eyes needed a fill of him.
I sighed, turning back to my plate. I had already been served, but I didn't have much of an appetite. I didn't have much of anything.
"Sir?"
I turned, my brows furrowed as the butler slowly opened the door. He gave a small, respectful bow, then took a step further.
"Your belongings have arrived."
I turned to Sin, and he simply nodded. "Take them up."
"Also, we are done cleaning out Angel's room, and it is completely bare."
Sin only nodded again.
"Would you need us to make some adjustments to your room, sir? I mean, for Madam?"
I swallowed as Sin finally met the butler's eyes.
"Have I ever sent you to my room?"
"No, Sir. I just thought..." He trailed off, then nodded. "Yes, sir."
The butler walked away, leaving us alone again.
"That's... pretty strict," I said, turning to Sin.
He raised a single brow at me before he turned away, turning his attention back to his cup of tea. I had never hated a cup of tea more than I hated this one he was holding.
"Angel?"
She turned to him, and without a word, got out of her seat, then walked the short distance to him. He leaned to her, and I wasn't quite sure what he was telling her, but she nodded happily.
"We should go," he said, standing up as he carried Angel in his arms.
I stood up, then smiled at Angel. "Let me carry her, Sin."
"She can walk," he said, and there was almost a tinge of annoyance in his tone. "I carried her because I wanted to."
I nodded. "Of... of course. Of course, Sin. I apologize."
He didn't reply to me and simply walked past me, Angel in his hand as she smiled down at me. I followed behind then, a little rattled. Sin felt almost angry, and he wasn't exactly talking.
Not like he always spoke, but still. It felt a little...cold out here.
We got to the already prepared car, and Sin kept Angel in the back before straightening up to meet my eyes. I started to move to the backseat because it was only logical, right?
I mean, I should sit in the back seat with Angel.
I had just gotten to the door when his voice stopped me in place.
"Am I your driver?"
I looked up. "What?"
"Sit in the front," he said simply, then opened the car door and entered the driver's seat.
I blinked, my brows furrowed. He had opened the door for me even last night, but somehow, today, after sharing so many.... well, uncontracted intimacy, he was acting incredibly cold.
I slowly opened the door and got in beside him, my hand resting on my lap, my eyes focused intently on the sight in front of me.
He put the car in motion and then got out of the compound. I adjusted my dress. It was the one I had worn yesterday. Angel was screaming about some game she was playing on her tab, and that left a cold, eerie silence in the front of the car.
"Sin?"
He turned to me for a brief moment, his brow raising.
"Is... something wrong?"
"With what?"
"I mean, you just seem offended. I just want to make sure I am not the reason or something I might have said."
He still didn't reply, and I gave a small sigh, then turned away, a small sigh escaping my lips. My hair was constantly in my way, and the dress that proved rather too short for sitting did not quite help my agitation.
I gave a small sigh, pushing my hair away while keeping a hand on my thigh to avoid the dress being rolled up. Suddenly, Sin pulled over by the side of the road. I turned to him curiously, but he wasn't looking at me.
He turned to Angel, then gave a small smile.
"Angel?"
She looked up, then around. "Are we here yet?"
He shook his head. "Lend me a hairband, will you?"
She nodded, then reached for the small cup compartment on the side of the door. There was a round, transparent cylinder that apparently held lots of hairbands, and I wondered how that even got there in the first place.
She handed it to Sin, and he gave her an appreciative pat on her head before he opened it and picked out one.
Slowly, he turned to me, and his eyes immediately went cold again, the tenderness melting away with his change of scenery. At this point, I knew I was probably the problem. Just how, I wasn't sure.
"Turn around."
My lips parted, and I swallowed. "You don't need to..." I trailed off, then nodded. With the look he was giving me, I was probably better off just accepting whatever act of kindness he wanted to give to me.
I turned around and closed my eyes, anticipating his hands in my hair. It didn't come for a while, before suddenly, I felt his fingers rake through my strands, sending a rather calming wave through my skin.
I let out a small sigh before I could catch myself, and I hoped he wouldn't hear it.
His fingers skillfully put my hair up in a ponytail before he turned away and started the car again.
I turned to him slowly, my lips parting. "Th... thank you."
He didn't reply for the first few seconds before he slowly turned to me, his eyes holding mine for a while.
"You are an expert at saying the things you don't need to and doing the opposite for the things you do."
My brows furrowed. I couldn't remember avoiding saying anything to him. If anything, I have been more than talkative, especially last night. Before I could ask what he meant, he turned away and sped off again, the cold settling between us once again.
