Chapter 145
I pressed my lips together and said nothing.
Jason looked at me eagerly, his eyes full of sincerity.
These past few days, sleeping in each other's arms after exhausting days had indeed helped me sleep well. And now, facing Jason's eager gaze, I really couldn't bring myself to refuse.
After a brief hesitation, I gave in.
"Fine, I'll trust you this one time. But if you lie to me, I'll never believe you again."
Jason's eyes lit up instantly, and the smile on his handsome face looked ridiculously cheap, "Yes, yes, yes! I promise I won't let you down!"
After giving him one last hesitant look, I went to the bathroom to shower.
After changing into my pajamas and coming out of the bathroom, I tried my best not to pay attention to Jason's overly intense gaze as I lay down on the bed.
The moment I lay down, Jason immediately moved closer.
The heat from his male body instantly put me on alert, "What are you doing?"
Jason slipped his arm under my neck and blinked innocently, "Nothing, just holding you while we sleep."
Seeing that he really didn't plan to do anything else, I finally relaxed and rested on his arm.
Jason smoothly pulled me into his embrace.
I thought tonight would be like the previous few days, and I'd fall asleep quickly.
But after half an hour, I still wasn't sleepy at all.
My skin felt Jason's slightly elevated body temperature, and his unique scent filled my nose.
Everything around me silently reminded me that Jason was holding me as we slept.
I couldn't help but think back to five years ago.
Back then, Jason also liked to hold me while sleeping.
We squeezed together on that hard bed in our rental apartment.
At first, I really didn't like him holding me like this and always tried to slip out of his arms after he fell asleep.
But gradually, I got used to it.
Habit is truly a terrifying thing.
After breaking up with Jason, I couldn't fall asleep for a long time.
The bed always felt so cold, the mattress so hard. It felt like there should still be someone beside me.
Even when I finally managed to fall asleep, I'd easily wake up in the middle of the night, instinctively feeling around beside me, searching for that warm embrace.
Every single time, my fingers touched only heartbreaking coldness.
The cruelest thing in the world is having something and then losing it.
My heart ached in waves.
I couldn't help but call out softly, "Jason."
Jason's deep voice sounded in my ear, "What's wrong?"
He kissed my face, his voice impossibly soft.
"Want to chat with me?"
I pressed my lips together in silence.
What was there to talk about?
I just instinctively wanted to make sure Jason was still beside me.
"No," I said.
Suddenly my waist tightened as Jason turned me around to face him.
He looked at me seriously, his eyes exceptionally bright, filled entirely with just me.
"You don't need to hesitate or think things over in front of me. Just say whatever you want to say."
A faint sigh seemed to escape his lips as he lowered his head and gently kissed the corner of my mouth, "Sue, try to trust me a little, okay?"
I met his gaze, my eyes flickering slightly, instinctively turning my head away.
"Sue..." Jason kept calling my name.
I couldn't stand him calling me in that coaxing tone, so I couldn't help but reach out and pinch his chest muscle, "Go to sleep!"
The muscle under my palm suddenly tensed.
Jason's eyes grew dark, and even his tone became suggestive, "Sue, are you inviting me?"
I blinked, "No, it's just that you've really built up your chest muscles well. They feel nice."
My tone was completely sincere.
"Right now I only have pure appreciation and admiration, nothing else at all."
Jason stared at me steadily, then after a moment lowered his head and kissed me.
Alarm bells immediately went off in my head!
I knew it! Men's words are all lies!
But Jason only kissed me and didn't do anything else.
My eyelashes trembled slightly as I instinctively lost myself in this gentle kiss.
"Mommy..." Jessica's voice suddenly rang out.
I snapped my eyes open and pushed Jason away!
I awkwardly turned my head and looked up to see Jessica standing in the doorway, holding her bedtime storybook, her little face looking confused.
"Mommy, what are you doing? Why is Daddy here?"
I slowly sat up, straightening my clothes while my mind raced to figure out how to brush this off.
"Because, because Daddy said his tooth hurt and asked Mommy to take a look."
Jessica looked at the pitch-black room and fell silent.
I covered my face.
Oh my god!
What kind of terrible excuse was that!
No choice now, the words were already out!
My hand hidden under the blanket frantically poked Jason, signaling him to play along.
Jason reluctantly sat up, covering one side of his face with his hand, his voice muffled, "It's a toothache. I need Mommy's help to feel better. Jessica, if you don't need anything, go back to your room first. Daddy still needs Mommy's help."
Jessica hugged her picture book without saying anything.
My heart immediately rose to my throat.
Jessica is a smart kid—of course such a clumsy excuse wouldn't fool her, right?
Just as I was thinking about how to smooth this over, Jessica suddenly ran over and jumped onto the bed, squeezing herself between Jason and me.
She faced me and plopped her bottom right on Jason.
"Mommy, read me the picture book! I haven't heard you read in so long!"
Facing Jessica's bright, expectant eyes, my heart melted completely.
"Okay." I rubbed Jessica's little head and turned on the bedside lamp, reading the bedtime story in a gentle voice.
The picture book wasn't long and didn't have any difficult words—Jessica could actually read it herself.
Jessica pressed close to me, looking at me intently.
Although she didn't say anything, I understood.
Jessica missed me.
When I finished reading the picture book, I reached out and rubbed Jessica's little head, "Alright, time to go back to sleep."
Jessica hugged the picture book but didn't move. Instead, she turned to look at Jason, who was leaning against the headboard playing with his phone.
"Daddy, aren't you leaving yet?"
Jason's expression didn't change, "Daddy and Mommy still have very important things to discuss. You go back to sleep first."
Jessica blinked, "Then I want to join too."
The corner of Jason's mouth twitched, "Adult topics aren't for kids to hear."
But Jessica huffed, tossed the picture book aside, and burrowed her little body under the covers, hugging me tightly, "Then Daddy, can you discuss it with Mommy tomorrow? Jessica wants to sleep with Mommy tonight."
Jason's face darkened a bit.
"No, you need to leave."
"No no, Jessica wants to sleep with Mommy!"
"You're already a big kid. You should have been sleeping on your own a long time ago. You can't keep clinging to Mommy."
"I'm still a little kid."
Jessica whimpered pitifully, rubbing her fuzzy little head against my arm, "Mommy, Mommy Mommy, can I sleep with you?"
How could I resist Jessica acting so soft and sweet like this?
I immediately agreed.
Ignoring Jason's increasingly dark expression, I reached out and hugged Jessica, "Sleep now, baby. Good night."
Jason didn't leave either—he also lay down on the bed.
A family of three, sleeping together on one bed in this bizarre arrangement.
