New Threat
New Threat
Maya's POV
The thing descending isn't solid. Isn't real. Isn't anything that should exist.
It's made of absence. Of void. Of the space where reality used to be and now there's nothing.
The Void Keeper.
Its thousands of eyes find the forty-three newly cured Guardians in the square. Then the air tears.
Not rips. Not breaks. Tears. Like fabric pulled too hard. Like reality has edges and something just found them.
Shadows pour through. Living shadows. Moving wrong. Flowing like water uphill. Like smoke made solid. They spill into Snow Valley hungry and ancient and impossible.
"What are those?" Mom's voice is too high. Too tight. Her hands already glowing gold. Guardian magic building.
"I don't know." My throat closes. "I've never seen anything like that."
The shadows hit the ground. More tears opening behind them. More pouring through. Dozens. Hundreds. Flooding the square like oil. Like death.
They move toward the cured Guardians. Ignoring everyone else. Flowing past townspeople. Past still-powerful Guardians. Heading straight for the forty-three humans who just chose vulnerability.
"Stop them!" Katherine tries to stand from the bakery doorway. Her legs give out. She catches herself on the frame. "They're hunting the cured ones."
She's right. The shadows don't care about magic users. Don't care about power. They want the empty ones. The powerless. The newly human.
"I've got them." I'm running before I finish speaking. Magic already burning in my palms. Hot. Bright. Ready to destroy.
I hit the first shadow with everything. Pure Guardian power. Enough to level a building.
The magic passes through like nothing's there. Like hitting air. Like hitting thought.
The shadow doesn't slow. Doesn't react. Doesn't even notice.
"They're not physical!" Katherine shouts. Her voice weak. "You can't hurt what isn't there!"
More shadows pour through tears appearing everywhere now. The sky above Snow Valley splits open in a dozen places. Two dozen. More.
I try different magic. Not force. Connection. I reach for the shadow's threads. Its bonds to reality. To existence. To anything.
Nothing. It has no threads. No connections. No substance. It's absence wearing shape. Void pretending to be real.
The shadow reaches the first cured Guardian. Woman in her twenties. Red hair. She gave up her power an hour ago. Chose humanity over monstrosity.
The shadow touches her arm.
She screams. Not pain. Worse than pain. Like her soul is being torn out. Like existence itself is draining away.
She drops. Doesn't move. Doesn't breathe.
The shadow flows to the next Guardian.
"They're feeding." A voice behind me. Jake's voice. I spin.
He's standing. Eyes solid black. Veins covering his skin. Still transformed but awake. Mrs. Rodriguez's spell broken or burned through.
"Jake." I step back. Instinct. He's dangerous. "What are you doing?"
"Watching them feed on emptiness." He stares at the shadows. His black eyes seeing something I can't. "On the absence of magic. On the void left when power burns away."
"How do you know that?" My hands stay ready. Just in case. Just because.
"Because I can feel it." He looks at his corrupted hands. "I feed on connections. They feed on the lack of connections. We're opposites. Two sides of hunger."
Another cured Guardian falls. Then another. The shadows multiply as more tears open. Reality breaking. Coming apart.
"We close the tears." Mrs. Rodriguez appears beside me. Breathing hard. Her silver magic glowing but weak. "Stop more from coming."
"How?" Mom joins us. "What even opened them?"
"The mass cure." Katherine's barely audible from the doorway. "Forty-three Guardians releasing power at once. That much energy tore holes in reality."
"Then we stop curing people?" I look at the remaining corrupting Guardians. At their black veins spreading. "Let them become monsters?"
"If we cure more, more tears open." Jake's voice strains. Like he's fighting to speak. Fighting something inside. "If we don't, they transform. No good choice."
A shadow reaches a still-powerful Guardian. One holding onto their magic. Still corrupting but not cured.
The shadow flows through them like they're not there. Doesn't feed. Doesn't stop. Keeps hunting for the empty ones.
"They only feed on the cured." I watch it bypass three powerful Guardians to reach a powerless one. "They're hunting absence specifically."
"Give the cured ones magic back." Mom's hands move. Already trying. "Fill the void. Make them not empty."
"Can't." Katherine's head shakes. Small movement. Exhausted. "Once magic burns away, it's gone. Can't rebuild from nothing."
Another cured Guardian falls. Two more. The shadows are everywhere. Covering the square like fog. Like plague.
Forty-three cured Guardians down to thirty-seven. Thirty-six. Thirty-five.
"Evacuate them." I grab the nearest cured Guardian. Man. Middle-aged. Eyes wide with terror. "Get them away from here."
"The tears follow them." Mrs. Rodriguez points. New tears opening down Main Street. In the residential area. Near the church. "They're tracking the cured ones. Hunting them specifically."
She's right. Wherever a cured Guardian runs, reality tears nearby. Shadows pour through. Give chase.
Thirty-four. Thirty-three. Thirty-two.
"There has to be a way to fight them." I throw fire. Ice. Raw power. Nothing connects. They're not solid enough to burn. Not real enough to freeze. Not there enough to hit.
Jake walks toward the nearest shadow. His transformed body moving smooth. Predatory.
"Jake, no." I reach for him. He's already past me.
"Testing something." He stops in front of a shadow. Lets it flow close. Touch him.
It jerks back. Fast. Like touching fire. Flows away.
"They fear me." Jake sounds amazed. Sick. "Connection Eaters and Void Touched are opposites. We're poison to each other."
"Then use the Connection Eaters as shields." Mom's voice rises. Excited. Desperate. "Cure them first. Use them to protect the others."
"No." Katherine's voice cuts through despite its weakness. "Every cure opens more tears. Brings more shadows. That's what the Void Keeper wants. More food. More absence. More death."
"Then what?" I'm shouting. Can't help it. "Watch them all die? Let the rest transform? What's the answer?"
Silence. No one has one.
Thirty-one. Thirty. Twenty-nine.
The shadows multiply faster than we can track. More tears than sky now. More void than reality. More absence than presence.
I watch a shadow drain a cured Guardian. Watch life leave. Watch human become empty. Become nothing.
These people chose to be good instead of powerful. Chose humanity over magic.
And they're dying for it.
"We fight the source." I look up at the Void Keeper descending. Still distant but closer. Always closer. "We stop it."
"How?" Jake asks. "We can't touch the shadows. How do we fight that?"
"I don't know." My voice shakes. "But trying is better than watching."
I gather everything. All my Guardian magic. All my corruption. All the power burning through my veins.
Throw it at the Void Keeper.
The magic streams up. Golden. Beautiful. Powerful.
Hits the Void Keeper.
Disappears. Absorbed. Gone like it never existed.
The Void Keeper opens more eyes. Hundreds more. All looking at me now.
Then it makes sound. Not words. Just. Sound. Like the noise the end of the world would make. Like silence screaming.
But somehow I understand.
Hunger. Gratitude. More.
My attack didn't hurt it. Fed it. Made it stronger.
Twenty-eight. Twenty-seven. Twenty-six.
The shadows ignore all attacks. Flow past every defense. Drain anyone without magic.
And they're multiplying. When one feeds, it splits. Becomes two. The two become four. Exponential. Unstoppable.
Katherine makes a sound. Small. Pained. She's sliding down the doorframe. Losing her grip.
A shadow notices. Flows toward her.
I run. Throw myself between them. Try to shield her with my body.
The shadow flows around me. My magic means nothing to it. My body is just obstacle. It reaches Katherine.
Touches her.
She screams. The sound cuts off fast. Her eyes roll back.
The shadow feeds. Drinks the absence where her magic used to be. Drinks the void in her soul.
I hit it with magic. Pass through. Hit it with fists. Nothing there. Scream for help. No one can stop it.
Katherine stops screaming. Her eyes close. Breathing slows. Shallow. Wrong.
The shadow drinks deeper. And splits.
One becomes two. Two flow away to find more prey.
They're not just coming through tears anymore.
They're reproducing. Every feeding creates more.
Twenty-five. Twenty-four. Twenty-three.
At this rate, minutes until they're all dead.
Then the shadows will need more food. More absence. More emptiness.
They'll start draining regular humans. Anyone without strong magic. Anyone vulnerable. Anyone normal.
The entire town. Gone. Empty. Voided.
And we can't stop them. Can't fight absence. Can't kill void. Can't hurt nothing.
Jake's black eyes meet mine. I see my horror reflected there. Multiplied. Made worse by his Connection Eater understanding.
"They won't stop." His voice is hollow. "Even if they drain everyone here. The tears are open now. They'll spread. Hunt. Feed. Until there's nothing left anywhere."
Twenty-two. Twenty-one. Twenty.
The shadows multiply. Reality tears apart. The Void Keeper descends.
And we're powerless to stop any of it.
