Chapter 24 Assignments

Sade
I am sitting across from Tomilino in his office. He’s behind his huge mahogany desk, watching me with a calculating smile. If I was wired differently I would probably feel something from that smile.
“Sade, I thought it was time for us to have a discussion, and to talk about your future.” I nod.
“You have already been working very hard and preparing for the position. When you graduate you will come and work for me permanently. We will start utilizing your very unique skills which makes you so well suited to be one of our Enforcers and one who takes care of our enemies.” I nodded again.
“I see what you so diligently try to hide. There is a predator in you, and you keep it tightly contained, and as a man that is our responsibility. However, there are times when you must learn to harness and use that predator within rather than constrain them. I told you years ago that I had plans for you, and then you started training a couple years ago, and my men tell me great things about your perseverance and determination. Those are very good things to have.” Again he paused and I nodded.
“Now, what I will discuss with you will be a private matter between men.” I pause and look him in the eyes.
Then for the first time I speak, “Yes Don Russo.” he nods.
“I have told you about my suspicions regarding your father and your mother. You know that your mother was my niece on my wife's side, so her death was a great tragedy. I am constrained by position from investigating him and learning the truth of if he had her killed or not. So, one of your assignments will be to ferret out that truth for me.” I smile a little at that one and this time he nods.
“Now, I have observed quite often that you are not like those around you in that you do not often feel those things that others do. There is nothing wrong with this. I see and know you have worked very diligently throughout the years to blend in with those around you, and again this is a good thing, and a necessary thing. Now I do believe that there is something you do feel for, and I believe you have plans in place or plans in the works. I do not wish to know your plans, but I will tell you that I will help you in any way I can, and I will attempt to help you obtain what is most important in your heart. We are family, and as such we help each other. Do you understand Sade?”
“Yes, Don Russo.” He nodded and then I was escorted out of the meeting and went home to make preparations for when I would leave to “attend college”.
I already had the house wired with cameras so I would be able to watch and look out for her. I also knew I would not be able to go long without my eyes on her. I would try to keep the student watchers in place, and we’d have to see how good that worked without me physically present at school.
Zoey will have her own car as soon as her birthday rolls around here. She’s a freshman this year, and she’s hanging out with all sorts of party people, and constantly going to parties, and getting high or drunk. I do also believe that she is now fucking her way through the freshman class.
Sometimes people are amazed that Zoey and I have such a contentious relationship and I don’t watch out for her, while I do so diligently with Rain. Usually after they spend a little bit of time in Zoey’s presence, then they understand.
There were only a few months until graduation, then Zoey would become a Sophomore, and get her own car. Rain would be in 8th grade and turn 14. So time seems to be moving way too fast. I will be working with Tomilino, and getting things all set up for the future.
I know beyond any doubt this will be one of the hardest things I ever do. Yes, I’ll be able to watch her through the cameras and things, but it’s not the same as being with her and seeing her in person every day. This will be my first time to be away from her since our parents married.
The parents have actually mentioned making a rare appearance to watch me graduate. I think it is ridiculous, but if that is what they wish, then that is what they will do. I’m not sure how Rain will feel about seeing her mother, it’s been quite awhile since their last impromptu visit. That woman has become the gold digging whore Zoey accused her of being all those years ago. When she decided the money and the lifestyle was more important than her daughter, then in my opinion that is precisely what she became.
Supposedly I will be attending Yale, and it’s a full 4 year program I’m enrolled in. I have set it up so they think I live in the dorms in a single room. They believe I am going to get my Bachelor's degree in business, but we’ll have to see if I choose to move up more than that, at least that is what they have been told. Of course that is absolutely nothing like the truth, but it is necessary for all of them to be fooled for now.
There will come a day when I tell Rain everything, but she will be directly affected by it, and the life I will cultivate around her. No one else matters anyway, at least not right now. We’ll have to see how that changes and what the future holds. Each step is a step closer to Rain, so I will walk them gladly. Then we’ll see how it all unfolds.
