Chapter 21: Prophecy's Call

The Council rooms felt colder than Lucas remembered. Marble pillars rose into darkness, their surfaces glowing with old runes. Around the circular room, Council members sat on stone seats carved with pack symbols – shadow wolves on one side, fire wolves on the other.

Elijah stood beside him at the center of the room, their shoulders barely touching. Even that small touch sent warmth through Lucas's body, fighting against the chamber's chill.

Elder Moonshadow watched them from her raised seat, her silver hair flowing like water around her ageless face. Her eyes – one gold, one black – seemed to pierce straight through Lucas's barriers.

"So," her words echoed in the silence, "Marcus plans to corrupt the Forest of Shadows during the blood moon."

"Yes," Lucas placed the stolen papers on the council table. "He's found a way to force shadow and fire magic together."

"Impossible," growled Councilor Blackthorn, his dark magic curling around him like smoke. "Those powers cannot be merged."

Elijah's hand found Lucas's, and their magic sparked noticeably – purple flames dancing with living shadows. The Council chamber exploded in gasps and whispers.

"Cannot be forced together," Elder Moonshadow amended, leaning forward. "But when freely given, when born of true connection..." She gestured to their joined power. "Well, we're seeing the result."

"Which is exactly what Marcus wants," Elijah said. "He needs our combined power to complete his ritual."

Lucas felt Elijah's fingers tighten around his. The memory of their escape from the rebel camp was still fresh, still painful. He could have lost him that day.

"The signs are clear," a new voice spoke. Lyra stepped from the shadows, her blind white eyes sparkling. "The realm bleeds. Magic cracks. Look."

She waved her hand, and the air shimmered. Images appeared around them – wells turning to blood, trees dying, wolves fighting as their magic went wild. In the Forest of Shadows, darkness spread like poison.

"The prophecy must be fulfilled," Lyra continued. "Shadow and fire must become one, or all will fall to darkness."

"You mean we have to complete the mating bond," Lucas said quietly.

Elder Moonshadow nodded. "The blood moon approaches. If you do not join your powers fully by then, Marcus will tear them from you by force."

Elijah's flames flickered nervously. "And if we do complete the bond?"

"Then perhaps you'll be strong enough to stop him," Lyra answered. "But there are no promises. The future clouds with options."

"This is madness," Councilor Blackthorn stood up. "We cannot risk the realm's security on a forbidden union. Shadow and fire were separated for a reason!"

"That reason was fear," Nova spoke from her place near the wall. "Fear of what we could become together."

Kael stepped forward, standing beside his brother. "Look around. Our separation hasn't brought security – it's brought us to the edge of destruction."

Lucas felt the Council's eyes on him and Elijah. He remembered their first meeting in these rooms, how they'd nearly torn each other apart. Now, the thought of being parted felt like having his heart ripped out.

"The choice must be yours," Elder Moonshadow said softly. "But choose quickly. The blood moon rises in three days, and the realm cannot wait longer."

Suddenly, the chamber's runes flared bright red. The ground shook, and wolves stumbled as waves of chaotic magic pulsed through the air.

"It's starting," Lyra's voice held real fear. "The balance breaks."

Lucas watched in fear as cracks appeared in the marble floor, darkness seeping through like blood. Elijah's fire tried to push it back, but the shadows were too strong.

"Everyone out!" Elder Moonshadow led. The Council members fled as the chamber started to crumble.

Lucas pulled Elijah close as a pillar crashed down beside them. Their magic merged instinctively, forming a shield of purple flame and shadow. Through the chaos, Lucas caught Elder Moonshadow's eyes.

"The prophecy speaks of choice," she called over the noise. "But sometimes, destiny chooses for us."

The room floor split open, and darkness poured in. Lucas and Elijah's shield held, but Lucas could feel the pressure. This wasn't normal shadow magic – this was Marcus's rot spreading.

They ran from the room with the others, emerging into the cool night air. Behind them, the Council building's runes glowed with sickly red light.

"The realm's magic is destabilizing faster than we predicted," Elder Moonshadow said grimly. "Marcus's influence grows stronger."

Lucas looked at Elijah, seeing his own fear mirrored in those amber eyes. They had both been fighting this – fighting their link, fighting the prophecy's pull. But watching their world crack apart around them...

"We have to complete the bond," Elijah whispered, his fingers intertwined with Lucas's.

"Are you sure?" Lucas asked, even though he already knew the answer. "Once it's done, there's no going back."

Elijah's free hand touched his face. "I don't want to go back. I want to go forward – with you."

Their power sparked between them, stronger than ever. Lucas could feel their wolves pulling for each other, tired of being held apart.

"The blood moon ceremony," Elder Moonshadow said. "It must be performed in the heart of the Forest of Shadows, where magic is strongest."

"Where Marcus will be waiting," Nova added quietly.

"Then we'll face him together," Lucas said, pulling Elijah closer. "All of us."

Around them, their pack members nodded – Blackwood and Darkhaven wolves standing united. Even the Council members who had opposed their union couldn't deny the power they made together.

"Three days," Lyra's blind eyes seemed to glow brighter. "Three days until the red moon rises. Three days until shade and fire become one – or all falls to darkness."

Lucas felt Elijah shiver against him. Three days to prepare for a service that would bind them forever. Three days to gather their troops, to plan their defense against Marcus's attack.

Three days to save their world, or watch it burn.

The night sky above them turned blood red, as if the moon was already rising. In the distance, wolves began to howl – a sound of fear and warning. The Forest of Shadows whispered with Marcus's poison, spreading darkness through the realm.

But as Lucas held Elijah close, their magic dancing between them, he felt something stronger than fear. Something that made their wolves sing and their powers fly.

Love.

Marcus thought he could force shadow and fire together through dark rites and ancient magic. But the real power – the power that could save them all – had been there all along.

They just had to be brave enough to choose it.

As if reading his thoughts, Elijah smiled. "Together?"

Lucas pressed his face against his mate's. "Together."

The red moon was coming. Marcus was waiting. And in three days, they would all learn if love really was stronger than darkness.

But looking into Elijah's eyes, feeling their magic pulse in perfect unison, Lucas already knew the answer.

They just had to prove it to the world.
