Chapter 20: Secrets in Shadow and Flame

Lucas paced at the edge of the forest, his heart beating against his ribs. Nova watched him from her spot near a big oak tree, her white hair gleaming in the moonlight.

"He'll make it," she said softly. "Elijah's stronger than you think."

"It's been too long," Lucas growled, his silver eyes searching the darkness. Every shadow made him tense, hoping it was Elijah returning. "I never should have left him there."

"You didn't leave him. He decided to split up," Nova reminded him. "And he was right – it worked. We escaped."

But at what cost? The thought haunted Lucas as he remembered Elijah disappearing down that dark tunnel, rebels in chase. Marcus's words rang in his mind: Your mate is mine now.

A twig snapped in the trees, and Lucas spun around, shadows gathering at his fingertips. A person stumbled through the trees, and Lucas's heart stopped.

"Elijah!"

The fire wolf looked terrible. His red hair was matted with blood, and he limped heavily on his right leg. But his amber eyes still burned bright as Lucas rushed to catch him before he fell.

"Miss me?" Elijah managed a weak smile, leaning against Lucas's chest.

"You idiot," Lucas breathed, holding him tight. "I thought... Marcus said..."

"Marcus talks too much," Elijah winced as Lucas helped him sit. "But his office was very informative while he was busy chasing me."

Nova knelt beside them, checking Elijah's cuts. "You broke into his office?"

Elijah reached into his torn jacket and pulled out a leather case stuffed with papers. "I figured if we were staging a breakin, we might as well make it count."

Lucas looked at the folder, then at Elijah. "You planned this?"

"Not exactly," Elijah admitted. "But when half the rebels chased me, I realized I had a chance. Marcus's private room was right there, and everyone was too busy to notice me slip inside."

"While we were worried sick about you," Nova said, but she was smiling.

"Speaking of worried..." Elijah looked around. "Where's Kael?"

As if summoned by his name, Kael appeared from the shadows with a small group of wolves – a mix of both Blackwood and Darkhaven pack members.

"Here," Kael rushed to his brother, relief clear on his face. "When Nova reached our camp with Lucas, I gathered everyone I could trust."

Lucas noticed how Kael's hand brushed against one of the Blackwood dogs – the scholar Lucas had seen him with before. So that's why he'd been crossing area lines so often.

"We need to move," Nova said, helping Elijah stand. "Marcus will be searching the forest."

They made their way deeper into the woods, to a secret clearing where more pack members waited. Lucas kept his arm around Elijah, holding him while trying not to show how afraid he'd been.

"I can walk," Elijah protested weakly.

"Shut up," Lucas answered, pulling him closer.

Once they reached the camp, Nova and Kael's mate – the Blackwood scholar named Finn – started treating Elijah's wounds. Lucas sat beside him, unwilling to leave even when others offered to take his place.

"The documents," Elijah said, pointing to the folder he'd stolen. "We need to see what Marcus is planning."

Kael picked up the folder and started sorting through the papers. His eyes widened as he read. "This is... this is worse than we thought."

"What is it?" Nova moved closer, looking over his shoulder.

"It's some kind of ritual," Kael spread the papers on a flat rock. "Marcus has been researching ancient magic, the kind that existed before our packs formed."

Lucas felt Elijah tense beside him. "What kind of ritual?"

"He's found a way to harness the power of the Forest of Shadows," Kael pointed to a diagram covered in strange symbols. "He's not just building an army – he's trying to make something new. A creature that can control both shadow and fire magic."

"That's impossible," Nova shook her head. "Those powers can't be forced together. That's why the packs split in the first place."

"Unless..." Elijah gripped Lucas's hand. "Unless you have someone who's already merged the powers naturally."

Everyone turned to stare at them. Lucas remembered how their magic had combined in the cave, making something Marcus had never seen before.

"He needs us," Lucas realized, his blood running cold. "That's why he let us leave. He wanted us to see his plans."

"Not just you," Kael held up another paper. "He needs the blood of true mates who can blend shadow and fire. Your power, freely given or forcefully taken, would let him control his creation."

Elijah's flames flickered anxiously around his fingers. "And what would this creature do?"

"According to these notes..." Kael's voice grew grim. "It would poison the Forest of Shadows, turning all its magic dark. Every wolf in the realm would be forced to submit to Marcus's rule."

"Or die trying," Nova added quietly.

Lucas looked at Elijah, seeing his own fear mirrored in those amber eyes. They had walked right into Marcus's trap. Their exit hadn't been luck – it had been part of his plan.

"There's more," Finn spoke up, pointing to a page covered in Marcus's handwriting. "The rite has to be performed during the blood moon, when magic is strongest. That's three days from now."

"Three days?" Nova stood up, restless. "We need more time. Our packs aren't ready for war."

"They'll have to be," Lucas said strongly. "We can't let Marcus complete this ritual."

Elijah squeezed his hand. "We won't. But we need help." He turned to Kael. "Send word to Aria. She needs to know what's coming."

"And Lyra," Nova added. "Her prophecies might help us understand what we're facing."

As Kael and Finn left to send messages, Lucas pulled Elijah closer, breathing in his smell of smoke and autumn leaves. "I'm sorry I left you there."

"Don't," Elijah touched his cheek. "You made the right choice. And I found what we needed."

"Next time we face him, we do it together," Lucas pressed his forehead against Elijah's. "No splitting up."

"Together," Elijah agreed, his flames dancing with Lucas's shadows.

Around them, their packs mingled, former enemies now united by a shared threat. But Lucas barely noticed them. All he could think about was how close he'd come to losing his mate, and how much worse it would be if Marcus succeeded.

The red moon was coming. They had three days to prepare for war, to join their packs, and to stop Marcus from unleashing a darkness that would destroy everything they loved.

As if reading his thoughts, Elijah spoke softly: "We'll stop him."

"How can you be sure?"

Elijah's eyes glowed in the darkness. "Because Marcus doesn't understand what true power is. He thinks he can force shadow and fire together, but we already know the secret." He lifted their joined hands, where purple flames danced in shadow. "Real power comes from love, not fear."

Lucas wanted to believe him. But as he looked at the papers scattered around them, at the ancient symbols and dark prophecies, he couldn't shake the feeling that Marcus had shown them these plans for a reason.

The forest whispered around them, its shades deeper than usual. In three days, those shadows would run with blood. The only question was: whose?

Nova's voice broke through his dark thoughts: "Lucas, look at this."

She held up a map marked with strange symbols. In the middle, where the Forest of Shadows was darkest, Marcus had drawn a single word: "Beginning."

Lucas felt Elijah shiver against him. The word wasn't just a name – it was a promise. Marcus wasn't just going to end their world.

He was going to create a new one.

And they had three days to stop him.
