Chapter 10: Jessica's Disdain

Selena's POV

The trait of my bravery didn't give me a welcome party. Instead, people looked at me with more hatred in their eyes. I've been on this pack for days, and yet they still haven't accepted me as one of them even though Kael already announced my position in his life.

I wasn't expecting his people to accept me immediately, especially since I know it's hard to accept a cursed woman like me. I'm slowly rising from the dirt I used to live in, and it's time for me to move on from my cruel past and embrace my future with kael.

“Look what you've done!” An angry voice captured my attention. “You are so useless and clumsy! I will shove your face with this!”

“Forgive me, Madam! Please!” A girl cried.

My feet lead me to the kitchen and witness a heart wrenching event before me. A young girl wearing a servant uniform was on the floor, covered with tomato sauce and had messy hair.

“Do you have any idea how hard it is to harvest such good tomatoes in the garden?” The head cook shouted, hitting the girl on the head with her finger.

I stepped inside and looked at her. I can see myself in her, especially since I experienced the same treatment before. The head cook yanks her hair and I can see the pain she was enduring.

I can't stand it anymore, so I step in and stop the woman from hurting the girl. “What are you doing? Why are you hurting this girl for a piece of tomato?”

She scoffed, “Who are you to interfere? It doesn't mean the alpha announces you to be his luna, you have the right to intervene. We don't even accept you.”

“I don't care if you don't like me. But this isn't about me. You were hurting this poor girl just because she wasted these tomatoes? You're cruel!”

The woman crossed her arms before smirking and replied, “These tomatoes are harvested for the Alpha. Yet that girl didn't appreciate the hardship of those people who harvested it. She ruined the food, and that's not it. I caught her last night stealing ingredients from the kitchen!”

“That's not true! I would never steal!” The girl defended herself.

I turn to her with pity before returning my attention back to the woman. “She didn't steal it.”

“And you believe it? She was an orphaned omega and the alpha took her in out of pity. She is glad our alpha is kind because if he lets her die out there, she will starve to death and will be eaten by rogues!” She shouted.

“The girl said she didn't steal it. Why are you insisting that? Perhaps she's an omega,” I commented. “Maybe this girl didn't steal it and she was being accused.”

Her eyebrows raced and she didn't seem to like what I said. She moved closer and said, “Are you saying that I'm the one that stole it and just accusing that useless brat?”

I shrugged, "I don't know. Are you?”

She laughed, annoyed. “Have you forgotten your position on this pack, miss? You are a curse and was taken by our alpha out of pity like that useless brat! You are there to accuse the head cook of this packhouse who was serving the alpha for years. A woman who just became part of the back a few days ago.”

“If you didn't do it. Why are you being defensive?” I questioned.

“Because the head cook would never do such a thing. Only ungrateful omegas will do and that girl was one of them.” Jessica's voice captured my attention. I turned around and she was standing behind me at the doorway.

She entered the kitchen with her arms crossed, and then she looked at the girl behind me from head to toe. I noticed the girl looked down with fear as if she didn't want to fight her.

“Take her away,” she commanded.

“Miss Jessica! Please! I didn't do it!” The girl begged.

The maids were about to take her when I stood in their way. I protect the girl from their judgement and cruelty.

“She is not going anywhere.”

Jessica frowned, “Why are you protecting that woman? Oh, she's like you. You saw yourself in her. Isn't it, Selena?”

“The girl seemed innocent, Jessica. Why are you taking her away without proper evaluation of the problem? She deserved a fair trial in this pack, but you seemed not to listen to her.”

“Why would I listen to someone like her?” She inquired.

“Because she's part of this pack. Isn't she supposed to receive the treatment like others?”

Jessica laughed like what I said is some sort of joke. “Are you freaking kidding me, Selena? Why would we treat a maid fairly?”

“Then you're not fit to be a Luna.”

She gasped and went closer, “What did you say?”

I stared at her, didn't even twitch. “You're not fit to be a Luna.”

“How dare you!—” I caught her hand before it could land on my cheek. After that, I let her wrist go violently.

“You are no Luna, Jessica. You are a bully. A real Luna will think about her people, not only herself. You will treat her fairly despite our differences because she's part of the pack,” I explained.

The head cook checked on Jessica's wrist and glared at me sharply, “How could you touch, Miss Jessica. You ungrateful woman! You should be thankful she let you stay despite the danger you could bring to—”

“No! I will never thank her because she's not the one who saved me. I will only show my appreciation to Kael, not to her. She's not even fit to be a Luna,” I answered.

I faced her with courage that I never felt. The urge to protect this girl was rushing on my veins. I can see myself in her, and I'm not letting them bully her.

“Kael will hear about this. I swear!” She warned.

“Go ahead, tell him. I will explain myself to Alpha Kael, not because I want to win his heart. But because I want to show everyone else that treating people fairly didn't depend on their position in the pack. Everyone deserves it, Jessica. Even this girl,” I answered.
