Chapter 106 Chapter 106
Violet
Despite my fear of getting caught, my brain couldn’t stop wondering about the stuff I had just seen and heard.
So was this wedding just a distraction? And who were ‘they’ and what were those weird symbols on the papers?
Lady Aurelia had mentioned that this manor was filled with secrets so were these mysterious papers one of them?
So many questions started bouncing in my head but for now, I had to focus on how to get out. Alpha Alaric placed his hands on his hips and stared at the papers again, gritting his teeth.
“Where the fuck do I find someone who can translate this gibberish for me?”
He sighed and looked my way but I quickly ducked behind the backside of the cabinet and counted to ten before braving to peek again.
Alpha Alaric rubbed his temple and then walked out of the room. Probably to get something. I didn’t waste time and immediately rushed to the door, careful to not make any noise. But then stopped short upon seeing Kelly standing outside.
“Dont let anyone go in. those papers are important.”
I had to do something quick. I looked around, grabbed the nearest object that happened to be a stapler and threw it behind her.
She was startled and turned around, giving me the precious few seconds needed to step outside.
But I wasn’t fast enough and she turned around almost immediately to reach for the door.
I pretended to bump into her and scowled.
“Ow, I am so sorry. Did you get hurt?”
I shoved her harder than necessary and the poor girl lost her balance, almost tripping on the carpet outside.
I extended a hand to her which she took immediately.
“Thanks”
I smiled at her while one of my eyes was still on the retreating back of alpha alaric. He kept walking down the corridor and disappeared to the left.
Only after that did I let myself breathe in relief. That had been a really close call.
I meant to walk away but then Kelly turned sharply towards my side and asked.
“I didn’t see you coming earlier”
I tried to act cool. “Happens”
But she shook her ehad. “No, I really didn’t see you coming. I had been standing right here before Alpha Alaric stepped out of the door. And then you appeared out of nowhere.”
I chuckled nervously.
“I can be fast at times” I looked around, inventing lies on the spot. “Werewolf reflexes you know.”
She thought about it for a while and lamented herself.
“Maybe I am truly clumsy.”
She hung her head low and I recalled the way Alpha Alaric had told her off for not being sharp. The poor girl seemed to be really trying hard but she still couldn’t meet the alpha’s expectations it seemed.
And then his wife had casually threatened to get her fired.
I felt a sense of pity for her. So, I smiled at her, giving her arm a gentle squeeze.
“Hey, you are not clumsy, okay? You are just a little jumpy maybe.”
Her face brightened at that and she pushed her glasses up her nose.
“Do you really think so?”
I nodded. “Yes. I see how you always are working and trying to meet demands of Alpha Alaric. That is no easy feat.”
She smiled wistfully. “This job is important for me. I am the sole provider in my family so I am afraid one day the alpha or the lady will just fire me.”
“You are hard working, Kelly. Nobody will fire you and if somehow you lose your job, there are plenty other alphas who will hire you.”
A wide smile blossomed on her face again.
“Like alpha Elijah?”
I was taken aback to hear her take his name out of nowhere.
I shrugged. “I guess so”
She looked around and then lowered her voice as if she was telling me some huge secret.
“Do you know if there is any vacancy under him?”
I shook my head. “None that I know of.”
A tinge of disappointment appeared on her face.
“Oh, you seemed close to him so I thought of asking you.”
I smiled at that. “You can ask him yourself whenever you see him.”
At that, she suddenly shook her head and placed both her hands on her cheeks.
“No, no. I can’t do that. Alpha Alaric won’t like it.”
I narrowed my eyes and studied her. “Your employer doesn’t get to decide where you work okay. If you dont like it here, just resign and find a job elsewhere.”
Kelly’s laughter felt more sad than happy.
“So what are you doing here anyway?”
“I cant. But thanks anyway.”
A servant appeared down the corridor so she quickly asked.
“I was looking for Cassie and thought I heard she came to meet alpha Alaric so I came here. Do you know where she is?”
Her frown disappeared and she shook her head.
“I dont know where she is.”
She suddenly stepped back on seeing one of the maids arrive and reached for the door to lock it properly.
“Kelly…”
I began but then she saw the maids nearing and staring at both of us so she immediately went inside and closed the doors.
Weird.
My phone rang, thankfully, only when I was outside the room and I saw Cassie’s name flash on my screen.
“Where are you? I have been looking all around for you.” She spoke without bothering to say hi or hello when I received her call.
Thankfully, I didn’t have to wander around because she bumped into me a few corridors later.
“Ow, look where you going girl.”
“Sorry” I muttered but noticed that she wasn’t alone. Nicole was standing right beside her, holding more bags than her body could carry.
“I shopped so much. I need to sleep” She yawned and then looked at me.
“Where the hell did you disappear? Didnt you come with us to the boutique?”
“I just had some work to do” I said and realized I had completely forgotten to do the very thing I had come to do in the manor.
Oh fuck!
I slapped my forehead and pushed them both aside but then Nicole suddenly asked loudly.
“Why are you just walking out of the corridor leading to Alpha Alaric’s office?”
A few servants and maids stopped doing whatever they were doing to look up when she asked that question loudly.
“Uh, is it the way to his office? I didn’t know”
I tried to play it off but she narrowed her eyes. “Of course it is. What were you even doing there? Trying to get him to buy an entire boutique for yourself?”
Instead of dread, a chuckle rose up my throat and left my lips.
Of course, thats where her mind would go.
I threw her a conspiratory look and replied. “No, but I might just snatch the number one jeweler tag from him.”
The look on her face was priceless and I chuckled all the way to my room while dragging Cassie with me.
Nicole gave us a long look but finally left to sleep off her exhaustion.
Crisis averted successfully!!
