Chapter 66
Matthew was raised with care by the Thomas family.
He had his pride.
But at this moment, all his pride was shattered, leaving only his concern for Sophia.
"As long as you let her go, I'll agree to anything you ask."
His hoarse voice and bloodshot eyes both spoke of his feelings for Sophia.
Evelyn had thought he and Sophia were partners in crime, but she didn't expect him to be so devoted to Sophia.
Unfortunately, Evelyn wasn't moved by his feelings. Instead, she couldn't help but laugh.
Seeing her smile, Matthew's expression became very strange.
Clearly, he had imagined countless possibilities, but he never expected Evelyn to react this way.
After a long pause, he asked dryly, "Are you that happy?"
"I'm wondering if there was something wrong with my parents' parenting. With the same issue, both children made the same mistake."
When you think about it, Timothy and Hannah had invested the same effort in both Matthew and Evelyn.
It's just that Timothy and Hannah were more relaxed with Evelyn, taking a hands-off approach, while they raised Matthew as the heir.
But Timothy and Hannah gave them both enough love, and they both grew up watching their parents' loving relationship.
So why did they both end up chasing after people who didn't love them when they grew up? Couldn't they see that they weren't in the other person's eyes?
Thinking of this, she just asked directly.
"Sophia doesn't love you. You know that, right?"
Matthew's already tired face showed even more darkness.
His voice became hoarse, with a hint of self-mockery.
"She likes Benjamin, but..."
He paused, and some emotion seemed to flash in Matthew's eyes before he slowly finished his sentence.
"How could someone like Benjamin get caught up in feelings?"
"Evelyn, he's nice to you on the surface, but it's really just because of the Thomas family's influence in Emerald City."
"But you don't really love him either. You're just doing it to spite me."
"Let's go home now and talk to Mom and Dad. You break off your engagement with him, and we'll get married."
Those last few words came out especially heavy.
He didn't hide his reluctance at all.
Evelyn narrowed her eyes, her smiling voice seeming to carry shards of ice.
"You're really shameless. What makes you think I can't live without you?"
She looked at Matthew's shocked face and snorted lightly.
"Even if he doesn't love me, he's the future heir of the White family, and he'll control the entire underworld in the future."
"As Benjamin's wife, what my future life will be like doesn't need spelling out, does it?"
"Under these circumstances, why would I give him up to be with you?"
"Besides, he acts like he loves me enough and fulfills all my fantasies."
The slight curve of her lips and her mocking expression both said that Matthew was delusional.
It wasn't that if he were willing to turn back, she would wait for him in the same place.
She was no longer the little girl who used to follow behind him.
Only at this moment did Matthew clearly realize that he had lost her.
Did his heart hurt?
No.
He came here today not to win her back, but to get her to let Sophia go.
Right!
Matthew suppressed the unfamiliar emotions surging in his heart: "You don't need to keep testing me, Evelyn. I grew up with you. I know you well."
"Once you've made up your mind about something, it's impossible to change."
"In your heart, there's only me."
At this point, he clenched his fists: "We can go submit a marriage application right now, as long as you get Benjamin to release Sophia."
"Of course, I'll also guarantee that I won't see her again after we're married."
Evelyn didn't waste time arguing with him about this: "What happened to Sophia?"
"The police arrested her. Don't tell me you didn't know."
Matthew's previous sentence was still pledging loyalty, but the next one carried a hint of mockery.
Matthew really had a terrible attitude for someone asking for help.
Clearly, deep down, Matthew still thought Evelyn only loved him.
What would it take for Evelyn to shatter this idea of his completely?
Still thinking, Evelyn opened her phone and searched, discovering that Sophia's arrest was trending.
Sophia was an actress after all, so she attracted quite a bit of attention.
Especially since Sophia was connected to Jeremy, the internet was full of people cursing at Sophia.
Additionally, Evelyn noticed that Jeremy and Sophia were mentioned as suspects. Anyone who knew a bit about what happened last night could guess this was about what happened to Freya.
Was this Benjamin helping her clear things up?
The corners of her lips couldn't help but curve up.
Looking at the cold and distant Benjamin, he was actually very attentive to her matters.
"Are you that happy to see Sophia fall into the mud?"
Matthew glanced at the phone in her hand, his voice tightening again: "I never knew you had such a vicious heart."
"It's not too late to know now," she went along with what he said. "Now you can be sure I won't help Sophia. After all, someone as bad as me - if I don't kick her while she's down, it wouldn't be appropriate. How could I help her in her time of need?"
She looked at Pearl, who had been hovering by the kitchen door: "Show him out."
"Yes, Ms. Thomas."
Pearl was stunned for a moment, then immediately walked over: "Mr. Thomas, please."
Although Pearl was polite, her attitude of throwing him out was clear.
Matthew ignored Pearl and stared at Evelyn: "Do you really know what you're doing?"
"You're the one who doesn't know what you're doing."
She stood up and walked toward the stairs: "I told you a long time ago, you're just an adopted son of the Thomas family. I will make you leave the Thomas family completely."
Since the Brown family had reached its end, the next step should be dealing with Matthew.
Sophia had never been this panicked in her life.
She sat in the police car, constantly looking outside, feeling guilty but still shouting.
"How dare you arrest me?"
"Do you know who I am!"
"Someone will come to save me!"
Each sentence was fiercer than the last, but it was just bravado. Her heart had long since collapsed in panic.
The police officers' faces showed no expression, their eyes looking ahead seriously, completely ignoring her shouting.
"Do you have evidence? Arrest me, and you'll all be fired!"
The more she got no response, the more panicked she became.
Just as she kept yelling, there was a loud crash, and her head slammed hard into the seat in front of her.
A wave of dizziness came over her. As her head felt heavy and foggy, the car door suddenly opened, and the dark barrel of a gun was pointed at her head.
"Get out!"
She had filmed police movies, but she had never actually seen a real gun. Her already dizzy brain instantly became even more confused.
Before she could react, she was dragged out of the car like a dead dog and thrown on the ground.
The pain in her body made everything in front of her blurry.
Until a pair of shiny leather shoes stopped above her head, and a gloomy face entered her vision.
"We meet again, Sophia."
"You... why is it you? Why are you here? Aren't you afraid he'll find out? He won't let you go!"
