Chapter 60
Benjamin froze for a moment when he heard the tears in Evelyn's voice, and his arms around her tightened even more.
His breath fell on her cheek, along with gentle kisses.
"How could I bear to let you go?"
A low sigh sounded by her ear, his voice carrying a hint of helplessness in the night.
"I was too hasty tonight. Can I apologize?"
Who would have thought that the high and mighty Benjamin would humble himself and plead like this?
Evelyn knew he was trying to soothe her.
But the more he coaxed her, the more wronged she felt, and her temper only got worse.
"What's the point of apologizing now? Where were you earlier?"
"Aren't you mad that I hurt your sister?"
"It was me, I did it on purpose!"
She regretted it as soon as she said it. Wasn't this just making things worse?
She was so anxious that tears fell, wishing she could bite off her own tongue.
"You got what you wanted, so why are you crying?" He kissed away the tears on her face, the tenderness in it beyond words.
No matter how much resentment Evelyn had, in this moment, it was all gently soothed away by Benjamin.
But her tears wouldn't stop, falling one after another.
"Stop crying, okay? It's all my fault. I'll never talk like that again."
The curtains were drawn very tightly, with no light coming through at all.
The only light came from the hallway through the crack under the door, but it was too far from the bed to provide any illumination.
In the darkness, Evelyn could only hear his comforting words and feel his warm breath, as if she were surrounded by him.
This feeling of being tightly pressed together made the little bit of hurt and unease in her heart gradually disappear.
But still...
"You don't blame me? Everyone's saying I hurt Freya."
Even though she knew he wasn't blaming her and felt less anxious, the grievance that somehow crept into her soft tone still made his heart ache.
"You didn't do it."
"You know?"
A low laugh, along with the vibration of his chest, let her feel it clearly.
"When you're angry, you'd slap someone directly. This kind of scheming thing - you wouldn't stoop to do it."
The arrogant and domineering Evelyn never hid her thoughts.
Evelyn was never polite to people she didn't like.
She raised her hand to wrap around his neck, her soft voice especially alluring in the darkness.
"If you knew that, why did you ignore me earlier?"
Evelyn thought of how he had left with a dark expression, carrying Freya, and her heart still hurt a little, not to mention the photos that followed.
"It was an emergency. I couldn't let anything happen to her."
He owes Freya a debt he can never repay.
Unless Freya did something suicidal, Benjamin could never ignore her for the rest of his life, especially after what happened.
But logic was one thing, feelings were another.
People in love never make sense.
Her arms around his neck tightened, her tone becoming unreasonable: "I don't like you holding her."
Before he could answer, she added another line.
"You can't hold anyone else either."
The corners of Benjamin's mouth unconsciously curved up, and his kisses on her cheek became more frequent.
"I won't. I won't hold anyone except you."
Benjamin's gentle and soft comfort finally calmed Evelyn's heart, which had been uneasy all evening.
Until an image flashed through her mind.
"You're lying!" Her voice rose again, angry and anxious. "You stayed with her tonight, and you were holding her hand and posting on Facebook!"
"What?"
Benjamin's voice carried some surprise as he took out his phone from his clothes and lit it up.
The only light in the room came from his phone, slightly glaring. Evelyn couldn't help squinting.
He turned the phone away.
"What are you doing? Is there something I'm not supposed to see?"
Evelyn's fierce tone, combined with her squinting eyes trying hard to open, looked full of grievance no matter how you looked at it.
Benjamin's expression became very gentle, and the curve of his lips deepened.
"How could there be anything you shouldn't see? You can look however you want."
As he spoke, he placed his phone in her hand.
Just as she was about to reach for it, she pushed it away with disgust: "I don't want to look! I don't want things that others have touched!"
Smart as he was, how could he not detect the problem?
Benjamin's eyes narrowed slightly as he picked up his phone and quickly opened the call log.
"You called me?"
Benjamin looked at the call log with no record of calls with Evelyn, his face darkening.
"No." She didn't know why his expression suddenly changed, just answered sullenly.
"Then how did you know someone else touched my phone?"
He explained to her in a low voice: "When Freya gets agitated, she likes to play Tetris. So at the hospital, I specifically downloaded it to help her calm down."
"What about her phone?"
"She said she left it at Miso & More."
How convenient?
Modern people - who can be without their phone?
Even when going to the bathroom, they wouldn't put down their phone, yet Freya got wine splashed on her and could still leave without her phone?
Evelyn didn't believe in such coincidences at all.
Benjamin watched her red lips purse and understood her thoughts.
But he said nothing, just held his phone in front of her.
It showed his Facebook.
He wasn't someone who liked posting on Facebook.
Except for specific greetings to Evelyn on special occasions, his homepage was almost completely blank.
She also wondered: "Could it be set to show to specific people and hidden from you?"
A low laugh sounded above her head.
"How could you hide things on your own Facebook specifically for others to see but not yourself?"
Obviously, there was no such function.
Evelyn had been so upset that she actually thought of such an impossible scenario.
Feeling a bit annoyed, she snatched his phone and asked fiercely while clicking rapidly.
"Do you usually check Facebook?"
"Rarely."
Except for looking at Evelyn's Facebook, Benjamin was never interested in other people's business.
She opened the chat between Benjamin and Freya.
The chat content clearly showed Freya's enthusiasm and Benjamin's indifference.
Evelyn didn't look much; she just opened Freya's homepage.
Clean and wholesome, with no ambiguous records of her and Benjamin anywhere.
Evelyn instantly understood the trick and sneered, directly tossing Benjamin's phone aside.
He didn't bother with it, just held Evelyn, whose expression had changed.
"What's wrong?"
"How much do you know about Freya?"
Benjamin's brow furrowed almost imperceptibly, his voice still as usual: "Why would I need to know about her?"
If Freya heard Benjamin's words, she'd probably faint from anger.
But Evelyn felt much better. She snorted lightly, her expression relaxing.
"True, you don't know her, so naturally you wouldn't know how many records of your transfers to her are on her Facebook, all those caring messages."
"If I didn't know about our engagement, I'd think she was your girlfriend."
Feeling Benjamin's aura change above her, Evelyn wasn't scared at all and continued.
"After all, just a few hours ago, a photo appeared on your Facebook of you holding hands with her, fingers intertwined, glad she was okay."
