Chapter 409: Didn't Succeed, Still Have to Take This Step
"Mr. Thompson, Veda has been in pain for days now. She can't even make a sound anymore. Please check on her as soon as possible."
Soren looked at Veda with heartache and spoke urgently.
Tyler came to the bedside and quickly reached for Veda's hand to check her pulse.
But Veda was in so much pain that it had become a reflex. The moment he touched her hand, she felt even more pain.
She even started to attack him.
"Veda, he's here to treat you. Don't move!"
Zoey reacted first and quickly grabbed Veda's hand firmly.
"Mr. Thompson, I'm sorry. Veda doesn't mean to attack you. It's just an instinctive reaction."
Soren also quickly explained.
"Stop talking, both of you."
Tyler had seen all kinds of patients and wouldn't hold it against them.
But he was much stricter with family members who kept talking.
His shout silenced the two behind him.
Tyler continued checking the pulse, but his frown made everyone around him nervous.
Tyler found this fascinating.
He could sense that her pain was related to her meridians being blocked.
But he didn't have the ability to clear them properly.
Tyler's reaction made the atmosphere even more tense.
Zoey wanted to ask but was afraid to speak and disturb Tyler.
After a moment, Tyler let go of Veda's hand and spoke up, "This is difficult, really difficult! Tell me, who did this to her? I need to meet this person. They're really something - how did they even do this?"
This meant he couldn't cure Veda.
Soren's face changed, his heart sinking deeper.
Zoey felt frustrated. If even Tyler couldn't help, didn't that mean she'd have to go to Emily in the end?
Then Tyler answered her unspoken question, "I can't cure her. I can only temporarily ease her pain so she can at least sleep well tonight and give her throat some relief."
Otherwise, even if she recovered, her voice might be ruined.
Zoey wasn't ready to give up. "Mr. Thompson, since you can stop Veda's pain, doesn't that mean you might be able to cure her? Maybe it just takes time, right? How about you ease her pain first, then slowly figure out how to treat her?"
Soren knew why Zoey was saying this - she just didn't want to go to Emily for help.
He had believed her before, thinking that with her close relationship with Veda, she couldn't be that heartless.
But now, he felt he shouldn't have any hope in Zoey.
"Zoey, you're not the one in pain, so of course you can say that. But because of your theories, Veda has been suffering like this. We can't listen to you this time."
Soren spoke firmly, his tone leaving no room for argument.
Zoey's face darkened at being called out so directly in front of Tyler.
If Tyler went back and mentioned this to Axel, wouldn't that make her look even worse to him?
She opened her mouth, wanting to defend herself.
Tyler spoke up, "We can't wait. If the blocked meridians aren't cleared, the consequences will get worse and worse. I'll be straight with you - I've always been interested in this and have studied it, but I've never figured it out. Even with more time, I still can't do it. Now we have this chance - you find the person who did this, they can cure the patient in that bed, and I get to meet the person I really want to meet. Hurry up and arrange it."
His words weren't a suggestion - they were an order.
After speaking, Tyler quickly took out a pill and gave it to Veda to ease her pain and calm her down temporarily.
Then he walked out with his hands behind his back.
Zoey and Soren quickly followed.
Considering that Tyler had come all the way from Emerald City and came straight here after getting off the plane, Soren arranged a rest room for him.
Tyler didn't refuse, but before going to rest, he reminded them, "Arrange for me to meet the person you mentioned who did this. Make it quick!"
Now only Zoey and Soren were left in the living room.
Zoey knew she had to face this.
"Ms. King, the engagement is coming up soon. You don't want these things to affect it, right? So please, bring Emily here before the engagement. I'm sure Veda would really like to attend your engagement ceremony."
Soren was making a blatant threat.
Zoey's face looked terrible, but she had to agree through gritted teeth, "Fine, I will."
So Zoey immediately transferred forty million dollars to Soren's phone. "This is all the cash I can get right now. I've recently invested in a new project, so this is what I could scrape together. For the remaining ten million dollars, I'll have to trouble you to raise it, Soren."
Soren hadn't expected Zoey to come up with forty million dollars. He had already prepared twenty million and was thinking he might have to ask Mason for more if needed.
Now he didn't have to, and his expression softened considerably. "That's very thoughtful of you. Don't worry, once Veda is cured, she'll definitely be grateful to you."
Zoey nodded.
After leaving the Smith Villa, she called Emily.
Emily had blocked her.
So Zoey couldn't get through at all.
With no choice, Zoey had someone track down Emily's location and went straight there.
Emily hadn't deliberately hidden her whereabouts, so it wasn't surprising that Zoey could find her.
Right now, she was at the law enforcement office.
She was there because she heard Bianca wanted to see her.
Emily thought about it - in this life and the last, she needed closure.
Making a clean break with Bianca was also making a clean break with her past self.
"I heard you asked to see me specifically. I'm here. What do you want to say?"
Emily was outside, Bianca was inside.
Emily wore a simple dress with no makeup, looking fresh and vibrant with good spirits.
Bianca wore prison clothes, looking haggard and dejected.
Everything seemed reversed.
In her past life, Emily had ended up sick and haggard, losing everything.
But Bianca had been glamorous, with a happy family and marriage.
Emily had a strange feeling, like everything had changed.
Seeing Emily's expression, Bianca got emotional. "You must be feeling pretty smug right now, aren't you? Laughing at me inside, thinking how I ended up like this too. You were supposed to be the ugly duckling, and I was supposed to be the one everyone admired."
Emily shrugged indifferently. "If that's what you want to think, I can't stop you. After all, these are the things you care about. It's not surprising you'd think so shallow. If you called me here just to say this, we have nothing to talk about. I'm leaving."
"Wait!"
Bianca stopped Emily.
Emily paused mid-step and looked at her deeply. "Have you figured out what you want to say?"
"You don't think you've succeeded now, do you? Do you think you've successfully latched onto Daniel? Or that you can win James back? You couldn't even hold onto one man."
"Still nonsense!"
Emily didn't want to waste more words and turned to leave.
Bianca shouted emotionally, "You, you're all just pawns. You won't succeed. In the end, I'll be the winner."
Emily frowned. What did Bianca mean by that?
Her mind turned, and suddenly she knew how to talk to Bianca.
