RP Chapter 40

RP Chapter 40
“What’s the matter?” Kace asked softly as she raised up on her elbows when she realized he was in the room.

“Nothing’s really wrong, just talked to Donovan, Shawn’s upset that I’m keeping you away, not that I care, boss has an investigation team lined up to go to the factor, my brothers, Shawn and Cooper are going.”

“I wanted to go,” Kace almost exclaimed.

“No, we’re going to stay right here, you’ve been through a lot that last couple of weeks, we need to get you to shut down a little, relax, I’ll get us some food started and I want you to try to get a little more sleep.”

“But-”

“Kacey, I’m head of the house, aren’t I? What I say goes, doesn’t it? We just talked about this, Kace..”

“Yeah, I know, I’m sorry, Ky.” She fell silent and seemed to put a little, but he’d let it slide this time and headed to cook them something to eat.

Kacey laid there for a little bit and her head began to whirl again. If only she could convince Kyle to let them go help with the investigation, get access to her lab equipment, she was almost positive she could shove this miserable mystery.

She got out of bed, she had to figure out how to convince Kyle, she just had to. If she had a punishment coming then it would be taken without complaint this time. No matter how much Kyle threatened to take her across his knee and paddle her bottom till it was so sore she couldn’t sit, she had to get into that abandoned factory.

She pulled the PJ’s on quickly and headed out to talk to Kyle, there were some things he just had to let her do. She loved him but would never ask him to stop his job or not do it, so he couldn’t ask her. He knew her profession, had actually gotten her into AS along with Davis, Shawn, and Donny. And she was very good at it.

As she entered the kitchen, and had had some rest, she couldn’t help but notice that the place hadn’t changed at all since the last time she had been there, when they had all been kids.

She took in the lightly green painted walls with the border of different fruit and vegetables around the top. Then the table, she and Donny were always made to eat at while Shawn, Kyle, and Davis sat at the bar, caught her gaze.

She took in a tiny breath as the photos of the past swam in her mind. What she wouldn’t give right now to be back in time, to sit at the table with Donny, as she secretly had a crush on Kyle, and they were all waiting on the pizza roll snacks Mrs. Davenport was making for them. To not be dealing with the bullshit of a crazy rogue agent and not be troubled with adult issues.

“Kacey, Kacey.” the deep voice broke through her thoughts a little.

Her gaze went from the table to Kyle in an instant. Her sight slowly un-blurred as she looked into his beautiful cobalt eyes.

“You okay?” Kyle slowly walked up to her laying his hands on her hips gently.

“I think so, just was taken back to our kid years is all, but it also hit me, I think the only person Donny could trust would be your guys’ father, but who else? There couldn’t be anyone else, he trusts Cunningham but barely, it’s always been you and me.” Kacey slowly searched Kyle’s gaze which softened instead of there being anger.

He squeezed and rubbed her sides. “I know, honey, I know, I wouldn’t go back to our childhood though, that’s when we didn’t have much to do with each other, even though I wanted to, it used to make me upset with how inseparable you and Donovan became, then we got older and I saw the friendship, you are a lot like Donovan, you don’t trust easily and don’t let a lot of people in either.”

Kacey let out a sigh and buried her head against his chest. “What are we eating, Ky?” She didn’t want to keep the conversation up; she wanted it dropped. She knew how strange and backward she was. All of her life and it would never be changed.

“Actually, strange as it is, pizza rolls.”

It made Kacey chuckle at the word pizza rolls, she shook her head a little but made her way over to the bar stools and hopped up on to the stool while Kyle made sure the pizza rolls were done and brought them over and sat up next to her.

They ate in silence, but it was such a peaceful silence. Not strained like most would have thought it was at the moment. Once they were done with the food Kacey decided to get everything cleaned up as Kyle turned his phone back on.

Kyle watched Kacey as she busied herself with the clean-up and his phone powered on. As soon as the phone finished it began to ring. He let out a huff as Donovan’s name came across the screen. “What now?”

“We came up empty, we were careful while we looked, paid even extra close attention, there was nothing there, if we don’t figure this out the team or what’s maybe left of it will start to look at me again or even Kacey , don’t worry, big bro, I’m alone, back at AS, but no one is around me.” Donovan finished as quietly as he began.

Kyle let out a scoff. “If you truly felt that way little brother, then Davis, Shawn, and myself failed you in your training, and I also know you wouldn’t be whispering if you felt alone, but they’d be crazy to think you or Kace had anything to do with it, she didn’t attack herself every time we were attacked, she wouldn’t have walked away from that Jeep with the way I looked, and you were locked up in AS up until the crash, those don’t add up at all.”

“Right now, I don’t think that would matter, especially if one or more of these agents have gone rogue.”

“Just don’t bolt, Donovan, please don’t bolt, even if it takes just the three of us we will solve this, stop making yourself look guilty by running, look I’ll be in touch again.” Kyle reassured his baby brother then ended the call and shut the phone off again.

As soon as he turned around he was met by Kacey standing in his path. “Does he want to run again?” she demanded.

“Maybe a little, he called to say they came up empty in their search, he didn’t mention anything about running, but he’s worried that one of the rogues will make it look like he or you have something to do with it.”

“Then we’re going there, Kyle, they made it look like he was guilty when he took off the last time, they could do it again.” Kacey spun from him without waiting for a response as she headed to the bathroom to get her clothes on.

He watched her walk away and if they were going to the factory he hoped she knew how much she would be in for later.
