Fate's Chains
The monster that was once Thorne lunged at Elijah and Liam. Its massive jaws snapped just inches from their faces before a joint blast of gold and silver energy knocked it backward.
"We need to retreat!" Marcus yelled, helping injured wolves away from the fight.
"Go!" Elijah ordered the pack. "Get everyone to safety at the Moon Cave!"
Aria ran to Liam's side. "We can't leave you two alone against that thing!"
Liam touched his sister's shoulder. "Trust me. We have the power to stop this."
"But—"
"Please, Aria," Liam begged. "Lead them to safety. That's how you can help us most right now."
Reluctantly, Aria nodded and began leading the wounded wolves away. Luna joined her, throwing one last worried glance at the transformed Thorne.
Once the pack withdrew, Liam and Elijah stood side by side, facing the creature that housed Morta's spirit. Its black fur seemed to swallow light, and purple fire dripped from its huge teeth.
"You think your little light show impressed me?" Morta's voice rumbled from the beast's throat. "This form is much stronger than the Alpha's body."
Elijah stepped forward, golden light pulsing around his hands. "Release Thorne. Your quarrel is with us."
"My quarrel is with all of you," the creature snarled. "Wolves who forgot their place!"
It charged again, faster than before. This time, its claws caught Elijah's shoulder, sending him flying into a tree. The bark splintered with the collision.
"Elijah!" Liam cried, running to his side.
Blood soaked through Elijah's torn shirt. The cut glowed with purple poison where the claws had touched him.
"I'm fine," Elijah growled, fighting to stand. "We need to attack together."
Liam helped him up. "We don't even know what we're capable of yet."
"Then let's find out," Elijah said through tight teeth.
They joined hands, and instantly their marks glowed brighter. The air around them crackled with energy.
"Remember what Kaida said," Liam whispered. "We need to reforge what was broken."
Elijah nodded, and together they sent a powerful beam of combined energy toward the monster. It hit directly in the chest, making the thing howl in pain.
But instead of falling, it seemed to take some of the energy. Its muscles bulged bigger, and it laughed—a terrible sound.
"Thank you for the power boost," Morta mocked. "Now, let me return the favor!"
The monster opened its mouth wide and breathed a stream of purple fire. Liam barely had time to create a silver shield before the flames hit them. The force pushed them back, their feet dragging through dirt as they fought to hold their ground.
When the fires died down, both of them were panting.
"This isn't working," Liam gasped, sweat dripping down his face.
"We need to try harder," Elijah urged.
Liam shook his head. "No, we need to try something different."
"Like what?" Elijah snapped. "We don't have time for new plans!"
"We need to stop fighting as two people and truly combine our powers," Liam urged. "Like the First Alpha and Omega did before the betrayal."
Elijah's face hardened. "You mean before my ancestor ruined everything?"
Liam blinked in surprise. "That's not what I meant."
"Isn't it?" Elijah backed away slightly. "My bloodline is the reason Omegas lost their power. My family caused all of this."
"And your family hid Omega genes to fix it someday," Liam countered. "You're not your ancestors, Elijah."
The monster circled them, enjoying their argument. "Yes, fight amongst yourselves. It makes my job easier."
Elijah's golden eyes flashed with anger—not at the monster, but at Liam. "Easy for you to say. You're the hero of the prophecy. The Last Omega. I'm just the descendant of the villain who helped Morta."
"That's not true!" Liam shouted. "We're both part of this!"
"Am I?" Elijah challenged. "Or am I just the Alpha who happens to be nearby when you fulfill your destiny?"
Liam stared at him in disbelief. "Is that what you think? After everything we've been through?"
Before Elijah could answer, the monster attacked again. This time, it grabbed Liam around the waist with one huge paw and threw him across the clearing. He landed hard, the wind knocked from his lungs.
Elijah roared with rage, his body moving partially to wolf form as he charged the beast. His claws, now glowing gold, cut across its face.
The monster howled but managed to catch Elijah with its tail, sending him crashing into rocks.
Liam stumbled to his feet, watching as Elijah fought the creature alone. His golden light flickered weaker with each blow he took.
"Stop it!" Liam screamed. "Elijah, stop trying to do this alone!"
But Elijah ignored him, continuing his solo attack while getting terrible hits in return. Blood streamed from wounds all over his body.
Liam closed his eyes, focusing on their tie. He could feel Elijah's emotions—not just anger, but guilt, fear, and underneath it all, something deeper.
"I know why you're doing this," Liam called out. "You're punishing yourself for what your ancestors did."
Elijah faltered for a moment, and the monster seized the chance to slam him to the ground. It pinned him under one massive paw, slowly adding pressure.
"You were saying, Last Omega?" Morta challenged. "Something about teamwork?"
Liam's silver marks blazed as anger filled him. With a speed he didn't know he possessed, he shot across the clearing and put his hands on the monster's leg.
Silver fire burned where he touched, making the thing yelp and release Elijah. Liam helped him scramble away before the monster recovered.
"We need to talk," Liam insisted, pulling Elijah behind a big boulder.
"There's nothing to talk about," Elijah winced, holding his bleeding side.
"There's everything to talk about!" Liam replied. "You think I blame you for history? You think I see you as anything other than my equal in this?"
Elijah wouldn't meet his eyes. "The prophecy—"
"Forget the prophecy!" Liam interrupted. "This isn't about some ancient prediction. This is about us. You and me."
The monster's roar shook the ground as it searched for them.
"I know what you're feeling, Elijah," Liam said more softly. "I can feel it through our bond."
"You can't possibly—"
"I can," Liam insisted. "And you know what I feel too, if you'd stop blocking it out."
Finally, Elijah looked at him. "What do you mean?"
Liam took a deep breath. "The prophecy talks about an Alpha and Omega whose union will restore balance. But it doesn't say anything about them being forced together."
Elijah's eyes widened slightly.
"I'm not with you because of fate," Liam continued. "I'm with you because—"
A massive black paw smashed through their boulder hiding place, sending stone pieces flying everywhere. The monster's face loomed over them, purple fire dripping from its teeth.
"Found you," it growled.
Elijah pushed Liam behind him protectively.
"Always the hero," Morta mocked. "Like your ancestor before he learned that power matters more than love."
Elijah's golden light flickered. "What did you say?"
The monster's mouth curled into a terrible smile. "Oh, did Kaida not tell you the whole story? Your precious First Alpha and Omega weren't just partners. They were in love—deeply, foolishly in love. Until I showed him what real power could feel like."
Liam felt Elijah's shock through their bond.
"You're lying," Elijah said, but doubt crept into his voice.
"Am I?" Morta laughed. "Ask your mate. The memory lives in his blood."
Liam closed his eyes, searching the new information that had awakened within him. Images flashed in his mind—two wolves running together under starlight, two humans holding each other by a fire, two hearts beating as one.
"She's not lying," Liam whispered. "They loved each other."
Elijah's face paled. "Then the betrayal was even worse."
"But don't you see?" Liam grabbed Elijah's arm. "That's why he hid the Omega genes in his line. Not just for some future fix, but because he still loved her, even after everything."
The monster's patience stopped. It lunged forward, mouth opening wide enough to swallow them both.
In that moment, Elijah made a choice. He pulled Liam close and wrapped his arms around him protectively.
"I won't repeat my ancestor's mistake," he whispered.
Their marks touched—gold against silver—and suddenly light burst around them. A perfect circle of energy formed, stopping the monster's attack just inches away.
Inside their bubble of safety, Liam looked up at Elijah. "What did you mean?"
"I won't choose power over love," Elijah said softly. "I won't choose anything over you."
The monster threw itself against their shield repeatedly, making it flicker.
"I think," Liam said, "that's what we've been missing. The First Alpha and Omega weren't just powerful because they worked together. They were powerful because they—"
"Loved each other," Elijah finished. His eyes, now a beautiful mix of amber and gold, searched Liam's face. "Liam, I—"
Suddenly, the barrier between them and the monster broke. Before either could respond, the creature's claws caught Liam across the chest, sending him flying. He hit the ground hard, blood instantly soaking his torn shirt.
"LIAM!" Elijah's scream tore through the air.
The monster laughed as it advanced on Liam's crushed form. "One down, one to go."
Something snapped inside Elijah. His entire body exploded in golden flames so bright they turned white. His form shifted, getting larger than any normal wolf—matching the monster in size.
"YOU WILL NOT TOUCH HIM!" Elijah's voice thundered, shaking the trees.
The monster paused for the first time, sensing the change in power. "What is this?"
Elijah charged, moving faster than sight. His jaws locked around the monster's throat, golden fire burning wherever he touched. The thing howled and thrashed, but couldn't break free.
Through pain-blurred vision, Liam watched the fight of giants. He could feel Elijah's rage and fear through their bond—and something else, something Elijah had been about to say before they were stopped.
With great effort, Liam pushed himself to his knees. Silver blood—not red—poured from his cuts. He pressed his hand to the biggest gash, and the blood collected in his palm, glowing like moonlight.
"Elijah," he called softly. "I need you."
Somehow, through the din of battle, Elijah heard him. Still holding the monster down, he looked toward Liam.
"Together," Liam mouthed.
Understanding passed between them. Elijah gave one final nasty bite to the monster's neck, then bounded to Liam's side, shifting back to his human form as he reached him.
"What do we do?" he asked, holding Liam's weight.
"Your blood," Liam said. "Mix it with mine."
Without hesitation, Elijah slashed his own hand with a claw. Golden blood welled up, as bright as Liam's was silver.
As they pressed their bleeding hands together, the monster broke free of its pain and charged toward them. "NO!" Morta shrieked. "I won't allow this!"
Their blood mixed—gold and silver whirling together—and began to glow with blinding light. The power built between them, stronger than anything they'd felt before.
"Now or never," Liam whispered.
They raised their joined hands toward the charging monster. Beams of light—neither gold nor silver, but something new altogether—shot from their hands.
When it struck the monster, something unexpected happened. Instead of being thrown back, the thing froze mid-leap. Its body began to crack like glass, purple light leaking from the breaks.
"What's happening to me?" Morta's voice quavered with real fear.
"We're setting Thorne free," Liam explained, his voice getting stronger. "And sending you back where you belong."
The cracks spread wider. The monster's body began to separate into two different shapes—Thorne's wolf form and a shadowy figure with Morta's features.
"This isn't over," Morta hissed as her form separated. "You may have won this battle, but the war has just begun."
"What do you mean?" Elijah asked.
Morta's fading mouth curled into a final, terrible smile. "Ask your sister, Last Omega. Ask her about the price of your power."
With those words, her shadow form shattered totally, fragments dissolving into the air. Thorne fell, unconscious but alive, his body returning to normal.
Liam turned to Elijah, confusion written across his face. "What was she talking about? What price?"
Before Elijah could answer, a heart-stopping scream echoed from the direction the pack had fled.
Aria's scream.
"No," Liam whispered, his face going pale. "We have to go. Now!"
But as they tried to stand, the world around them began to blur. The power that had filled them moments ago drained quickly, leaving them weak and shaking.
"What's happening?" Elijah gasped as they both fell to their knees.
Liam looked down at their joined hands. The blood there had turned black, and dark lines were spreading up their arms.
"I think," Liam said, his voice weakening, "we just found out what price Morta meant."
