Divided We Fall

The silver stone in Liam's hand burst with light as the shadow chains reached for him. The cave filled with a bright glow, and the chains turned to smoke.

Elijah stumbled back, the purple fire in his eyes flashing.

"Liam," he whispered, his real voice breaking through. "Run. I can't hold her back for long."

"I'm not leaving you," Liam said, stepping forward. "I know you're still in there."

Elijah clutched his head, falling to his knees. "She's in my mind. The poison... it let her in." His body shook as he fought for control. "You need to go. Now!"

"No," Liam said strongly. "We're stronger together. Remember what Kaida said."

The thought of her name made Elijah growl. His eyes flashed purple again. "Kaida is a liar," he growled in Morta's voice. "She uses you like a pawn."

Liam held up the silver stone. "This is from the First Omega. I know what I have to do now."

He closed his eyes, focusing on the warm link between them. The silver marks on his skin began to glow, lighting up one by one like stars.

"Get out of his head," Liam ordered, his voice deeper and stronger than before. He pressed his marked hand against Elijah's chest.

Silver light flowed between them. Elijah screamed as the purple fire in his eyes fought with his natural amber.

"I can help you," Liam whispered. "But I need you to fight too."

Above ground, chaos ruled. The pack had broken into two clear sides.

"We need to save Liam and Elijah," Aria shouted, standing on a big rock. "They're the key to everything!"

Marcus shook his head. "It's too dangerous. We need to retreat and regroup."

Half the wolves had grouped behind Aria. The other half stood with Marcus.

"The old ways failed us," said a young wolf named Raven. "Look around! Morta's creatures are everywhere because the old laws let her in!"

"Without the laws, we have nothing!" an older wolf barked back. "Centuries of tradition can't be thrown away because of one special Omega!"

Morta watched from a distance, her smile growing. "This is perfect," she whispered to her shadow helpers. "Let them tear each other apart."

Rook pushed through the crowd. "Listen to me, all of you! Is this what Elijah would want? Is this what Liam jumped into that hole for? For us to fight each other?"

The pack fell quiet.

"Rook's right," Aria said. "Every minute we waste fighting, Elijah and Liam face Morta alone."

Luna stepped forward. "I may be from the Shadow Pack, but I know truth when I see it. The prophecy speaks of balance, not choosing sides."

Marcus studied her. "What do you know about the prophecy?"

"More than most," Luna admitted. "I've been working with Kaida for years. Waiting for the Last Omega to appear."

Gasps ran through the pack.

"You're a spy?" Marcus growled.

"No," Luna said quietly. "I'm a believer in the old magic. The real pack law—before it was twisted."

Before anyone could respond, the ground started to shake.

In the cave, Liam pressed his face against Elijah's. Their breaths synced as Liam's silver light fought against Morta's purple poison.

"I know who I am now," Liam whispered. "The Last Omega. But that doesn't mean what she thinks it means."

"What... does it mean?" Elijah asked through gritted teeth, fighting for each word.

"It means I'm the last one born with full powers before the truth can return to all Omegas," Liam stated. "Not the last one ever."

The runes on Liam's skin moved, rearranging themselves. New marks appeared, golden instead of silver.

"What's happening?" Elijah gasped.

"The First Alpha and the First Omega were partners," Liam said. "Their powers were meant to work together. When the laws changed, the bond was broken."

Understanding dawned in Elijah's eyes. "The recessive Omega genes in my family... They're from the First Alpha."

"Yes," Liam nodded. "You're not just any Alpha, Elijah. You're his direct descendant, just as I am the First Omega's."

Morta's voice screeched through Elijah's mouth. "No! You cannot know this! Who told you?"

"Kaida showed me the truth," Liam answered calmly. "The First Alpha betrayed his partner because of your lies. But part of him regretted it, so he hid Omega genes in his own line, hoping one day they would help fix what he broke."

Elijah's back arched as he fought harder against Morta's power. "How do we fix it? Tell me!"

"Like this," Liam said, setting the silver stone against Elijah's chest.

The stone melted into Elijah's skin, leaving a perfect silver handprint over his heart. As it faded, golden marks began to spread across Elijah's body, matching Liam's silver ones.

Elijah howled as the poison in his veins fought with new golden light. His eyes flashed between purple, amber, and now a bright gold.

"Fight it," Liam urged. "Remember who you are."

Above ground, the shaking grew worse. Cracks split the earth, and strange lights shone from below.

"What's happening?" someone cried.

Aria closed her eyes, feeling the energy spark. "It's Liam. And Elijah. They're... changing."

Morta suddenly appeared among them, her form more solid than before. "Fools! Do you know what they're doing? They're destroying everything!"

"No," Luna replied. "They're fixing what you broke centuries ago."

Morta lunged at Luna, but an unseen barrier stopped her. "What is this?"

"Protection runes," Aria explained, showing markings on her hand similar to Liam's. "My brother taught me before he jumped."

Marcus looked at Aria with new respect. "You've been holding back your powers too."

"All Omegas have," she revealed. "We just didn't know it."

Morta screamed in fury. "It doesn't matter! My servants will tear you apart while your precious Alpha and Omega waste time with ancient magic!"

The twisted wolf creatures circled the pack from all sides.

Rook stepped up beside Aria. "We need to buy them time."

Marcus nodded slowly. "For once, I agree with the youngsters." He turned to the split pack. "Forget your differences! Form a circle! Protect each other!"

The wolves looked unsure, still separated.

"Choose now," Luna pushed. "Tradition or change doesn't matter if we're all dead!"

Slowly, wolves from both sides moved toward each other, making a protective ring.

In the cave, Elijah and Liam now glowed like twin stars—one gold, one silver. The ancient runes covering the cave walls began to shine in reaction.

"I can feel it," Elijah gasped, his eyes clearing to a beautiful mix of gold and amber. "The poison—it's burning away."

"Morta made the Alphas fear Omega power," Liam stated. "But the truth is, we're stronger together than apart."

The cave rumbled as energy built between them.

"What happens now?" Elijah asked, grabbing for Liam's hand.

"We complete the bond," Liam said, intertwining their fingers. "The real bond—not just as mates, but as Alpha and Omega, the way it was meant to be."

When their lips met, power burst outward. The cave roof cracked, sending light shooting toward the surface.

The pack watched in awe as beams of gold and silver light burst from the ground. Morta's creatures shrieked, backing away from the light.

"No!" Morta howled. "This cannot be!"

The light touched each pack member, and something strange happened. The wolves with Alpha blood began to glow gold, while those with Omega blood shimmered silver.

"The old magic," Luna whispered. "It's awakening in all of us."

Marcus stared at his hands as gold light danced across them. "How is this possible?"

"It was always possible," Kaida's words rang out as she appeared beside Aria. "The power was hidden, not gone."

Morta faced her sister with hate. "You planned this all along."

"I merely set the pieces in motion," Kaida smiled. "The Last Omega and the True Alpha did the rest."

The ground split open fully, and from the depths rose Elijah and Liam. They floated in the air, surrounded by whirling gold and silver energy. Their eyes glowed with power, and similar marks covered their bodies.

"Brothers and sisters," Elijah's voice boomed, louder and stronger than before. "The time for division is over."

"The true pack law is this," Liam continued, his voice equally powerful. "Balance in all things. Alpha and Omega, strength and wisdom, tradition and change."

Morta screamed, lunging at them with claws extended. "I will not be defeated by children playing with ancient magic!"

Just as her claws were about to reach them, something unexpected happened. Thorne Ravencrest, the Shadow Pack Alpha, jumped from the trees and tackled Morta.

"Now!" he yelled to Elijah and Liam.

Time seemed to freeze as Morta and Thorne hung suspended in mid-air. Everyone watched, holding their breath.

Liam and Elijah raised their joined hands toward Morta.

"It's time to break the chains," they said together.

But before their power could touch her, Morta smiled—a terrible, knowing smile.

"You've awakened the old magic," she hissed. "Just as I planned all along."

With a twist of her body, she grabbed Thorne and put her hand on his chest. Black magic poured from her fingers into his heart.

Thorne's eyes widened in shock, then turned totally black. His body convulsed as Morta's power filled him.

"Did you think I only had one plan?" Morta laughed as Thorne's body started to transform. "You've given the wolves back their power, but now I have a new vessel—the most powerful Alpha of the Shadow Pack!"

Thorne's body grew, turning into something monstrous. His fur turned pitch black, and his teeth expanded into daggers. When he turned toward them, his eyes were pools of swirling black.

"The final battle has just begun," Morta's voice echoed from Thorne's transformed body. "And this time, I will destroy you all."
