Chapter 70: Echoes And Anchors
Zephyra spent most of Saturday morning in the backyard alone. She sat cross-legged on the grass beneath the oak tree, the pendant warm in her lap. She didn’t attempt a shift. She simply breathed, letting the events of the past week settle inside her like sediment finding the bottom of a lake. The late-night call from Aldric replayed in fragments in her head all over again in the way one might turn over a new stone to see all its sides.
Kaelric joined her after his morning run, dropping down beside her with two glasses of water. He didn’t bother to ask her questions right away. He simply sat with her, their shoulders brushing, the mate bond providing its steady silver thread of connection.
“I keep wondering what I’ll say when I call him back,” Zephyra said after a long stretch of silence. “I really don't what to say to him. However, I want to keep the door open without inviting the whole storm inside at once. I want him to know that I'm open to talking to him.”
“You’ll know when the moment feels right,” Kaelric replied, voice low and certain. “You’ve gotten very good at setting your own pace.”
They stayed outside for nearly two hours. Zephyra eventually practiced a light partial shift with just her hands and senses this time , while Kaelric watched with quiet pride. When she released it, they talked more about the call. About how Aldric’s voice had carried both regret and hope. About how the pendant seemed to respond more strongly since that night. About how the slow life they had been building suddenly felt both more precious and more fragile.
Seraphina came out to join them around midday, bringing a tray with sandwiches and fruit. The three of them ate together under the oak tree, the conversation flowing naturally from small daily things to deeper waters. Seraphina shared how strange it felt knowing Aldric was alive and had reached out. She didn’t push for details, simply offered her presence and quiet understanding.
In the afternoon, Elowen came over. The four of them , Zephyra, Kaelric, Seraphina, and Elowen ended up in the living room playing cards and talking about everything except the heavy topics. Elowen’s bright energy and teasing helped lighten the air. For a few hours, Zephyra felt almost normal again. She was laughing at the silly stories Eileen was telling and watching Kaelric lose dramatically on purpose, feeling the warmth of a chosen family slowly forming around her.
Sunday was quieter. Zephyra and Kaelric took a long drive to their overlook in the morning, sitting on the hood of the car for hours. They talked about the upcoming nationals and how Kaelric wanted to play with freedom rather than pressure and how Zephyra planned to cheer openly as his mate for the first time. They talked about her training, about Seraphina’s growing confidence at work, and about the letter Zephyra had sent and the call she had received.
“I think I’ll call him tomorrow night,” Zephyra said as the sun began to lower. “Short. Just to say I’m processing and that I’m open to further conversation with him ”
Kaelric nodded, pulling her closer. “I’ll be right here with you when you do.”
They returned home in the late afternoon. Seraphina had prepared a comforting meal, and the three of them ate slowly at the dining table. Conversation stayed light but real. Seraphina was sharing a funny story from work, Kaelric talked about the final team morale before nationals, Zephyra mentioning how much better cheer practice felt these days.
After dinner, Zephyra and Kaelric retreated to the backyard once more. The routine had become sacred. She practiced holding a fuller partial shift while Kaelric watched and offered gentle feedback. This time she managed nearly forty minutes, her wolf feeling more integrated, more cooperative. When she released it, she felt tired but deeply satisfied.
They sat on the bench afterward for a long time, wrapped in each other as the stars emerged.
“I’m scared of the meeting whenever it happens,” Zephyra admitted, voice barely above a whisper. “But I’m more scared of never having it. Of always wondering.”
“Then we face that fear together when the time comes,” Kaelric said, pressing a slow kiss to her temple. “You’ve already survived worse things than truth.”
They talked late into the night about the future, about what their lives might look like with Aldric in it somehow, about how the mate bond had become the strongest anchor in all the uncertainty. The conversation never rushed toward solutions. It simply existed, it is honest , true and patient.
When they finally went to bed, Zephyra curled tightly against Kaelric, the pendant warm between them and the mate bond glowing softly in the dark.
