Chapter 113: Darkness

Soraya

I just stayed there without a word, just watching as June and Evander got along so well. They just kept talking, and for a moment, everything just felt right. When the bell rang, I was snapped out of whatever haze I was in. Evander and June just stayed looking at me. Then June got up slowly.

“It was such a pleasure meeting you, but I have to go. I have classes.”

Evander smiled at her. “The pleasure is all mine.”

“Can you wait for me outside the door?” I said, and she nodded.

When the door closed behind her, I turned to look at him. “So, what do you think?”

“I think she is amazing. Now get to class.”

"No,” I said as I walked towards him. I sat on his lap, intertwining my fingers with his.

“Has anyone ever told you you have such soft hands?” My eyes landed on the mark again, and he immediately pulled his hand away from mine when he realized I was staring at it.

“You know, sooner or later, you will have to tell me what that is, right?”

“It’s nothing.” He placed a kiss on my cheeks. “I wish every moment could be like this,” he continued.

“Like how?” I asked.

“I don’t know, like… just pure perfection. Us being happy every single time.”

“Me too,” I said.

I walked out of his office. June was actually waiting for me.

I didn’t know why I expected her to have been gone, but she wasn’t.

“Are you ready to go?” she asked, and I nodded. “What classes are you having?”

“History,” she said.

“Me too.” Then she stopped walking.

“What’s wrong?”

“There’s something I need to tell you,” June said with a serious expression on her face.

My heart skipped a bit because what the hell was going on here? She usually had this warm, welcoming look and her smile was amazing, but right now, staring at her, she looked like a stranger.

“I swapped classes to be closer to you.”

Okay, that was weird. “Why?”

“I want to have the same routine as you.” She said.

She was saying it in a way that creeped me out. “Okay, you’re actually creeping me the hell out. You need to stop.”

“I’m sorry,” she said quickly, “but Soraya, that’s all I have to tell you. I really wanted to inform you about this in a better way and in a way that wouldn’t scare you, but we don’t have time.” June stood still. It felt like somebody was talking through her. I was so confused and weirded out.

“What do you mean by we don’t have time? Why don’t we have time?”

“I thought easing you into it would have been the best approach, but I see now that I was wrong and we need to have a serious conversation.”

“Okay, whatever it is, I’m listening.” I hated the way she just switched up on me.

She looked around, but we were practically the only ones there.

“I saw the mark on your mate’s hand.”

“Okay…”

“And that’s a mark of protection, but it wears off, and when it is gone completely, whatever your mate is hiding from would find him.”

“If you’re trying to scare me, you need to stop.”

“I’m not kidding, Soraya. Evander is in danger, and for him to use such a powerful spell, it means he’s in serious danger.”

I stared at her face when she spoke, and she didn’t look like she was joking. But why this sudden change?

“Okay, so let me get this straight. I introduce you to my mate, and the best thing you decided to do is to come up with some lie about something you know nothing about.”

“Soraya, I may not know a lot, but believe me, I know what I’m talking about. The same way I know that you are a hex wolf.”

“What the heck is that?”

“You are a wolf that controls both magic and witchcraft. So is your mate.”

“What the hell is wrong with you? I knew I never should have talked to you. I don’t know why I keep attracting psychos and freaks.”

She was calm all through. “You know I am telling you the truth. Some part of you believes me even though you refuse to accept it.”

“I need you to stay away from me. I never should have introduced you to Evander. I trusted you when I shouldn’t have. That’s actually my problem—trusting. And thanks to you, I’ve learned never again.”

“Soraya, Evander is lying to you about a lot of things. The more you keep acting ignorant, the worse for the both of you. You know there is something going on, but you refuse to believe it.”

“Who truly are you? Why have I never seen you around school? I know there is no way in hell I can know every student in the school, but wait—a face like yours, I should have seen you even if it’s once.”

“I lied to you. I am not a student here, and I shouldn’t be telling you any of this now, but everything is happening sooner than anticipated.”

“You know what is going to happen right now? I am going to walk away, and I never want to see you again. I need you to disappear back to wherever you came from.”

I turned around. I began walking away, feeling so heartbroken. I just knew this wouldn’t last. I was a weirdo who kept attracting other weirdos, and me having a friend—it felt too good to be true.

“You are so powerful and you feel it. You have to stop running from your power and embrace who you truly are.”

I didn’t stop walking.

“The darkness will consume you, Soraya, if you do not listen to me. You would become your greatest fear.”

My legs immediately stopped moving. It felt like they were glued to the ground.

“And what the hell is that supposed to mean?” I said without turning around.

“You think everything that has happened so far was just happening to you because you were unlucky? The darkness is coming, and it would be like nothing you have ever seen.”
