Chapter Thirteen
Chapter Thirteen
CLARISSA DEVOR POV —
I swear I was still thinking about Morgana and her stunts even when I had to go to the hospital.
Back track?
Yeah sure.
My dad had been unstable and hospitalized for some time now and I had my suspicions as to how he got there but for the mean time, I decided to keep them to myself. Until I had concrete evidence for instance.
I made it part of my routine to at least visit him every day and just talk to him. I like to think that he heard me but everytime I came here and he was still unconscious.
The nurse gave me a short nod and walked out of the ward.
I pushed the door open, somehow, hoping against hope that something would change.
That I would see him smiling up at me and beside the damn bed, that he would actually hold my hand and talk to me...
Stop it, I muttered.
I bit my lower lip seeing him on the bed with the oxygen connected on his face and the drips plugged into his skin, all connected to a giant life support on the wall.
There was a constant reading on the screen nearby. He was still breathing.
At least he was stable... Well, as stable as someone in a coma would be.
I heaved a pained sigh and made my way to the bed, slipping into the seat that was reserved for me.
I was a regular visitor here.
As far as I could tell, Lilly didn't come here to visit him half as often as I did. Either that or we had a remarkable talent in coming at different times and complete avoiding the other person.
That was assuming she actually had a heart and cared about father.
I held his hand and closed my eyes, mediating for some time.
Maybe Morgana was right after all. The only reason that I was the CEO of the company was because of the circumstances that had turned into the new reality.
Father's mental health broke down, lots of stuff happened and blink...! I found myself in charge of the Devor company.
At that time, the shock was overwhelming and I just stood there in the middle of all the chaos, unsure of what to do.
And of course, dearest Lilly was there at every step of the way.
I opened my eyes and laughed a little.
It was hilarious how I was so blind to see through her manipulative ways and false sympathy.
She acted like she cared, I even started to look up to her. But now that I knew all there was to her, it wasn't so hard ti see that everything she had done back then was just a means to a selfish end she had planned for herself.
An end that involved me dead, out of the picture... To be remembered as the gullible sister who knew nothing about her husband's behind closed doors shenanigans with her elder sister whom she was fool enough to trust and eventually ended up dead, the reality of it all consuming me and leaving me breathless.
I gave a fake smile. To think that was actually my fate. That in another life, I was already dead.
But she since I knew what was going to happen now, I would be a fool to let history repeat itself.
“She tried to kill me dad,” I muttered.
It was easier to tell him all my deepest darkest secrets. We had always been close and even though he was unconscious and in coma, I still liked to think that he could hear everything that I said.
That he was here with me, but maybe he was just too weak to respond.
Listening is good too. I thought with a smile.
“Lilly had actually succeed in Killin me back then. She poisoned me around this time, and I only found out four years later but it was already too late,” I paused and glanced up at the big wall clock hung on the wall near the window.
Hmm... Time didn't seem to stop now?
I knit my brows not knowing what ri think.
Was it because the person I was taking to couldn't hear me and it could only be counted as me rambling along in a quiet soliloquy?
“I know what you would say dad. Not everyone has the luxury of a second chance, so it is important to use it wisely. Get back at them while you still can. ”
“And if you can't beat them, find someone who can,” my lips curved up into a smirk.
They only deserved death for trying to kill me. Better luck in their next lives bit this was the life time that Lilly and Karl payed for their sins.
And I wasn't Just talking about the make them jealous highschool revenge game.
I stood up.
It had taken me a moment but just now, I relaised that Morgana was only a decoy. The least of my worries now.
It was fun indulging in her petty games and the momentarily thrill of the fight she offered, but for a moment, I let myself get too caught up in it.
I gave it some thought, still frowning a little.
She was a problem though.
If Damien still loved her, that would prove to be one heck of a problem.
“Damien Martinez...” I mused. “I wonder what your story is. ”
My legs instinctively went towards the window like it was a ritual I did everyday and already knew the routine on auto pilot.
I replaced the hyacinth flowers on the window pane with fresh ones and a couple of roses.
As I gazed out the window, I couldn't help but think about Damien. What was his deal with Morgana anyway?
And why wouldn't the little bitch of a woman accept the fact that they were over and stay preferably away from him and everywhere he was likely to show up in.
Somehow, I was starting to believe that it was more that the clingy bitch ordeal.
He had a hand in this too. I wasn't sure how but I just knew it.
He was hiding secrets. And why I didn't know how that bit of information fitted I to things yet, I couldn't deny its existence.
I shook my head, focusing on the present moment. For now, I was satisfied with him serving as my perfect little revenge tool.
The public didn't even have to buy it if they did'nt want to. My goal was already halfway achieved.
For now, I had to prioritize my father's recovery and my own survival. Lilly and Karl were still out there, waiting for their chance to strike. I couldn't let my guard down, not even for a moment.
I took a deep breath. Who said that it was going to be fucking easy?
“Get well soon dad,” I muttered kissing his head softly before grabbing my bag and walking out of the ward all together.
For two years now this has been going on and the hospital was the only place I went to let out all the thoughts that was bothering me beside my dad who couldn't even hear me but still seemed to give me titbits of advice.
A weird place to think, but every time I walked out of the ward, I felt a rush of calm, almost like my next steps had been aligned and all I had to do was to tow the line.
“How much longer would this continue? How long would he remain like this?” I asked the doctor on my way outside.
He shuffled on his feet. “You would find that we are doing the best we can to keep him stable and comfortable miss Devor. ” he said.
“As much as we would love to, we can't just will a patient in coma conscious. Trust me, I understand your concerns and you can be rest assured that he is getting the best treatment here,” he assured me with a patient smile.
I gave a sigh. Assuming I could do something about it, then we probably won't be stuck here.
I looked up from my phone seeing a message from my best friend Isabella.
Isabella —Hey girl! Just checking in on you. We haven't caught up in ages. I know you've got a man now but let's grab lunch or coffee soon?
I smiled, feeling a warmth in my chest. Isabella was one of the few people who truly understood me.
Or so I thought.
When you went back in time from a reality where your sister and husband you were married to for four years were having an affair long before he proposed, you start to have trust issues and it becomes hard not to read nonexistent meanings to random things.
I shook away the thought as I quickly typed out a response,
Me— Hey Iz! Would love to catch up soon! Let me know when you're free and we'll plan something.
I hit send and slipped my phone back into my bag, feeling a sense of gratitude just for Isabella being there.
